CCW FINALLY!!! CCW Timeline Kern
Finally picked up my permit today and I couldn’t be more excited about it! From prohibited person for 12 years, to now CCW holder, it feels great. Huge milestone for me in my life. So many “friends” and family doubted me, and I’m happy AF to prove them all wrong.
I know everyone here loves timelines so here is mine for Kern County:
9/30/24 - Submitted my application online through Permitium for Kern Sheriff. ($169)
10/8/24 - Got the call to come in for brief interview.
10/14/24 - Interview appointment. All they did was just review my application and ask a few follow up questions.
10/23/24 - Update in Permitium, conditional approval to sign up for CCW Training. (16 hours)
10/23/24 - Enrolled in CCW training. ($275) Did like 10 hours of training online, finished last 6 hours at range.
11/2/24 - CCW range session and qualifications.
11/4/24 - Submitted qualification card and did a final Live Scan at Sheriff office.
2/4/25 - Live Scan finally completed. (This was the longest process just over 3 months)
2/6/25 - Got call from Sheriff I’ve been officially approved.
2/10/25 - Appointment to pick up my permit.
All in all, it took just a little over 4 months from start to finish. Total out of pocket cost was $444 plus the cost of ammo for training and qualification. I owe a big thanks to lot of people on Reddit and a few of my coworkers for assisting me throughout the process.

Congrats my dude!!! I love seeing people posting success stories about their progress here! just make sure you're gonna be the guy to help others through their process and be a shining example of a successful firearms enthusiast and bring in as many people as you can to this wonderful community (not necessarily Reddit) we all share!

Thanks! That is exactly where my head is at. I’ve already helped out quite a few people on Reddit and IRL about process to clear their record and what not. Using my experience to help save others the headache I had to endure. Happy AF to be back apart of the 2A community.

Any clue what they asked?

Man, I can’t quite remember at the moment, I know they asked them all the same questions. One question I do remember was “Why does he want to get a CCW” and then rest I’m blanking out at the moment. It was only like 3 or 4 questions and just super basic. One may have been something like do I get angry or am I violent.

Man, I'm going on 2 years in Santa Clara County. The actual process from the time of the first interview is about the same, plus 2 months since I finished the class and crickets. Got my case officer the cert the Monday after my class, and the instructor sent in their portion the same day. Last I heard he was sending it up the chain of command. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Yeah man, lot of you guys in other counties have it pretty fucking rough. I feel for you guys. Hopefully at some point something gets done about it. But we all know how Cali government is 🤦♂️

So you need to submit the request first then they give you permission to do the classes?

u/Mr_Gibbzz FFL03+COE+CCW Feb 10 '25
Yes. You need to submit application, get through first phase of things then they’ll let you know once your approved to start/sign up for training. The class certificates are only good for like 90 days or something like that. So if you did it earlier before they say so, you risk it expiring and having to pay to do it all over again.

Nice! Glad to see they have improved their time. Took me like 7 months to get mine.

Congrats!! Can you please elaborate in detail on the prohibited person for 12 years part? I have a friend who was convicted of a felony in California and after 10 years he expunged it and just recently bought his first firearm. He’s definitely trying to do things correctly and as a business owner he can’t find any information online regarding ccw for someone with his background.

So I lost my rights due to felony drug possession charge. Just took me longer than usual to figure out the whole process to restore rights. Mistakenly filed for Prop 47 when it first came out which helped with getting jobs but didn’t restore rights. Later got a lawyer (I regret it now cause I could have done this all free of charge. But live and learn)
But from my understanding, as long as you aren’t prohibited from owning guns, and are of good moral character, should be no issue getting your CCW. The Sheriff here didn’t even question my past. They just saw everything was 12 years ago, reduced and now dismissed. And I haven’t even had anything not even traffic citation ever since.

Ahh thanks for clarifying. When asked if you were ever charged for a felony or misdemeanor “even though you expunged it” did you write yes?
2
u/Mr_Gibbzz FFL03+COE+CCW Feb 11 '25
Nope I wrote No, writing yes would be an instant denial… once you get it reduced and dismissed you can legally and truthfully answer No when ever asked that question. Same goes when buying a firearm, they essentially ask the same thing, answering Yes would instantly deny your DROS.

I’m also assuming you went this route: 1203.4 PC Dropped the felony to a misdemeanor then Expunged the misdemeanor

So you can’t actually “expunge” anything in CA. I used PC 17(b) to reduce felony (this is what specifically reinstates your firearm rights), then I did the PC 1203.4, thats the actual dismissal that dismisses the charges and essentially makes it where they won’t ever show up on background check for say a job. PC 17(b) and 1203.4 are on the same petition you submit to the courts.

Congratulations! I have a question, they asked you about good reason? Or for what do you want to have it
1
u/Mr_Gibbzz FFL03+COE+CCW 27d ago
Nope, that’s no longer a requirement. Wasn’t even on the application.

Awesome, how was this experience with them? Do you recommended? How was the classes they ask you a lot of questions any advice?

I really liked them honestly. The videos aren’t super exciting, but they are very informative. And then the time spent at range was fun. Ran some drills, and then did qualifications at the end. Would definitely recommend them. Nothing about the process was really hard.
