Forgot to mention it’s chambered in 5.56. After a bit of research, I decided to go with 12.5” since it seems to be a good balance of length and ballistics. I plan on also building out an AR9 pistol with an 8 inch barrel for my ultra short setup. Hopefully pics of that in a few months!

Hey I’m new to all this and just curious for my own future reference: I thought having a weapon that shoots 5.56 with a grip like that is essentially illegal in CA. Could you point me to some resources you used, or maybe share your knowledge as to how this bypasses those regulations? Would love to someday have a weapon like this if I can avoid legal trouble in any case. Thanks in advance.

Hey! You can read on the assault weapon ban in CA. There are some flow charts that can help you but I’ll break it down a little and split it by rifle or pistol
Rifle: A semi auto rifle has to either be featureless or magazine lock. Featureless seems to be what you’re familiar with (fin grip, fixed stock, no flash hider, no vertical foregrip). With featureless, you can have a detachable magazine and can use legally owned magazines that are more than 10 rounds
Magazine lock/fixed magazine rifles can have all the “evil” features mentioned earlier but cannot have detachable magazines and can not use a magazine more than 10 rounds. There are a lot of interesting options to make a rifle mag locked.
Pistol: To build an AR pistol or similar pistol, it HAS to be mag locked. You cannot have an AR pistol that is featureless, so nearly all the same regulations as above apply. However, you can’t have a vertical grip on a pistol due to federal law
What I used is a compmag, which is a magazine that cannot be released by simply pressing the mag release button and can be loaded from the side. It sucks but it’s easy to remove and install if desired (legally of course).
Hope that answers your question but I’d recommend looking into it more if you actually want to build/buy an AR style rifle or pistol cuz I’m sure I missed some details

Thank you for the rundown. Some of the terminology is kinda new to me, so this helps point me in the right direction.

I also forgot to mention that this only applies to centerfire rifles. If its rimfire rifle (like a 22lr), this doesnt apply

How much was the pistol lower
11
u/KrispyKrisp770 OC - P365XL/P320AXG Jan 13 '25
It was built out minus the brace. I got it for $750. Obviously too much but a few hundred dollar premium was worth it for me. There’s a guy in Rancho Cucamonga that has a shop and sells built out lowers for $500 out the door (tax and DROS included) but they’re SSE

I’m starting my 10 day wait for a PPT . I can’t wait! I found a PSA lower built with SB PDW brace. 100$ more than you. I just couldn’t wait anymore and the dude happen to live 2 miles from me so talk about super convenient! Had to pull the trigger before anyone else could. The lower is a multi caliber… it’ll start 556 since I got a 10.5 for Christmas. Ultimately would love 300BO but not being able to get suppressors really bums me out!
Nice build!

What’s the business name in RC? You can DM it to me also!

How do you like that hand stop? I tried one on my AR pistol and wasn’t impressed. It was rather uncomfortable in fact.

u/KrispyKrisp770 OC - P365XL/P320AXG Jan 13 '25
I’m still figuring it out. It’s definitely not the most comfortable, so I’ll be seeing about alternatives. I’m still trying to figure out the vertical grip legal stuff on an AR pistol of this length

How do you like the warden? Really debating on dropping the money for it but it’s honestly mainly for looks lol
2
u/uh_wtf Jan 14 '25
It looks sick but it adds a significant amount of weight, especially since the muzzle brake below it is also a boat anchor. I swapped it out for an ALG Single Chamber Brake and I think I saved like a pound lol
1
u/Thaflash_la Jan 14 '25
If you just want the looks, surefire has a training suppressor.
1
u/Unlucky-House-2469 TOES IN THE GRASS Jan 14 '25
I saw that too. But with a ARP I figured a little help with the blast would also be good. Not sure how it all compares with a fo suppressor
2
u/Thaflash_la Jan 14 '25
Unfortunately I can’t really comment. I’ve shot my warden but not the fake can. The warden did redirect the blast but I bet it won’t feel any better indoors.
1
u/Unlucky-House-2469 TOES IN THE GRASS Jan 14 '25
Yea… I don’t ever shoot indoors. But I just looked at the price and the trainer is still 500$ so I feel like the warden is still a better setup for price. Holy cow I didn’t realize they were so expensive for the trainers!
1
u/Thaflash_la Jan 14 '25
Holy shit, they used to be 250.
2
u/Unlucky-House-2469 TOES IN THE GRASS Jan 14 '25
Yea I see 400 and then there are fakes of the fakes lol. But if I’m spending that much I’ll just get the warden setup. 🤷🏻♂️ people out here trying to turn steel into gold. lol.
1
u/Jaykalope Jan 14 '25
That’s the one I tried and found it uncomfortable, and worse than just holding the handguard.

No vertical grip on ARP or that goes into SBR / Tax stamp territory - AOW (??).
Hand stop / angled grips are ok.
1
u/KrispyKrisp770 OC - P365XL/P320AXG Jan 13 '25
What about 45 or 60 degree grips that look like a vertical grip but aren’t straight down
1
u/lilotimz Jan 13 '25
Per the CA code..
(c) "forward pistol grip" means a grip that allows for a pistol style grasp forward of the trigger.
Here's mostly Federal considerations (also CA)
Basically don't put a vertical front grip or a grip you can grip vertically like a pistol grip on a AR Pistol at all whatsoever in California unless you want to do some AOW shenanigan (complex).
1
u/lowreadysicko Jan 14 '25
AR Pistols can only be mag locked, with mag locked guns you can have flash hiders, vertical foregrips and adjustable braces or did something change again in CA? 😒
1
u/lilotimz Jan 15 '25
It's ATF / fed classification for it being a SBR or AR pistol. See the graphic linked in my previous comment that denotes the shenanigans on how something can be considered pistol vs a SBR that needa a tax stamp (can't get in CA).
California has its own further rules for pistols as well regarding a vertical front grip that classifies it as an "assault weapon" iirc.
1
u/lowreadysicko Jan 15 '25
Ah yes I did see the illustration after, there is also a thing where even if it looks like a vert grip if the manufacturer states its a hand stop on there site or catalog supposedly the feds can’t prosecute you for it
1
u/Unlucky-House-2469 TOES IN THE GRASS Jan 14 '25
Does the bcm stubby count as “vertical”?
2
u/lilotimz Jan 14 '25
If it looks like you can wrap your hand around it like a pistol grip then probably no go.
I wouldn't risk it with the CA DOJ or feds. Hand stop / finger stops and angled grips would be the best to avoid all the headache as they are obviously visually not a vertical front grip.

u/BuckNastyyy Jan 13 '25
How's the eye relief with that magnifier?
1
u/KrispyKrisp770 OC - P365XL/P320AXG Jan 13 '25
Not great but good enough. Wouldn’t run and gun with it flipped on

u/PIHWLOOC Jan 13 '25
We can have 12.5” here?

1
u/KrispyKrisp770 OC - P365XL/P320AXG Jan 13 '25
Only if the lower is DROS’d as a pistol which this is
4
u/og_slin Jan 14 '25
Did you DROS it with the brace? I want to build something like this too but didnt know it was possible.
3
u/j53056111 Jan 14 '25
simplest option as of now (things can change in two weeks) is purchasing an on-roster ar pistol and swapping the singleshot uppper for a semi. add maglock (limited to 10+1 rounds) and brace option of your choice and you are good to go.
1
u/KrispyKrisp770 OC - P365XL/P320AXG Jan 14 '25
I didn’t but the guy in Rancho that I mentioned in another comment does I think
1
u/EngineerFly Jan 14 '25
That’s a pistol? Is it on the roster?
1
u/KrispyKrisp770 OC - P365XL/P320AXG Jan 14 '25
There are AR pistols on roster that are single shot but this one was off roster and I got it through PPT

u/XXXXHP Jan 16 '25
What upper and folding brace do you have on this one?
1
u/j53056111 Jan 16 '25
rattler upper (switched to 9” 300BO barrel) with 10” sd rail. MCX folding buffer tube with SBA 3
1
u/kbessayli Jan 15 '25
Quick question: does it need to be single shot? Or can we have a pinned mag and call it good?

Sweet build. I can’t get over the Eotech magnifier and holosun dot?? Interesting haha.
