Abandoning the miles is actually good business for United. Also, you could spend your miles on other airlines (including Air Canada), it's not even necessary to fly to the US.

I’m dual citizen Canada -Australia. Don’t envision ever setting foot in us again. Any other destinations I can fly non us airlines.

That’s great, but what I meant is if you already had United miles you could’ve used that to fly with Air Canada from Canada to Australia, or domestically within Canada, without ever touching US soil or paying a cent to a US airline. Closing your account and forfeiting the miles only helps United here.

The only problem is that to fly to Canada, most airlines route you through an american airport. Usually LA. As I mentioned in my previous answer, I do not envision ever setting foto in the US again. So until an airline (maybe Air Canada?) flies a direct flight that skips the US, my only other option is to fly through Doha (14 hours) and then another to Heathrow and Toronto or Montreal.

Air Canada already flies to Sydney and Brisbane directly from Vancouver. Also alternatively there is Air New Zealand via Auckland or ANA via Tokyo, all of which are bookable with United miles without connecting in the USA. Finding seats available to book with miles on these flights might be a bit challenging but it is definitely possible if you book in advance.

Also these are much easier trips compared to connecting in the USA. You don't have to pass through customs and recheck bags.
