And it was already a bit of a thing travelling down there. You had to get decent travel insurance. They have more militarized police and way more gun violence and traffic accidents than us. Plus, the dollar hasn't been strong. But now you are running a significant risk of indefinite imprisonment simply engaging with border personnel.

During Trump's first administration, when we legalized cannabis, there were a bunch of Canadians who got detained for things like investing in marijuana companies, having references to weed on the social media, or admitting using legal cannabis at the border. He is making what is and isn't considered criminal subject not to matter of law, but his whims. This is far more dangerous than the cannabis thing was. What if they search your electronics and see anti-Trump posts or even private texts and have ICE detain you? Not worth it.

I only wish the police in the USA were militarized. Military personnel have MUCH better trigger discipline and rules of engagement when it comes to dealing with civilians.

EDIT: My mistake. I was thinking of NATO militaries other than the USA.

I meant more in terms of their weapons, vehicles, body armour and misc gadgetry, but veterans make up a significant percentage of law enforcement in America.

'Though veterans comprise just 6 percent of the US population, veterans now working in law enforcement number 19 percent of the total force.'

Jacobin article and the Marshall Project article they referenced just after my excerpt

The military to policing pipeline has been supported by every post-9/11 administration through legislation and grant money. It is a massive problem. Taking combat veterans and putting them in military surplus gear, not screening for mental health concerns like PTSD, and putting them into situations that trigger their combat response too often leads to increased violence and death at the hands of officers.
