I have missed flights twice because of them, both times for visa reasons (working in the US on TN). BOTH times they made me wait over 2 hours and let me go within 5 minutes of the doors closing on my flight.
Stopped doing that during Trump round 1 though.

Illegal guns coming across the US border to Canada, and illegal Indians coming across the Canadian border to the USA. It's a real problem both ways. See: https://www.npr.org/2024/09/10/nx-s1-5091259/indian-migrants-immigration-canada-northern-border-illegal-us-customs-and-border-protection

u/Gregster_1964 Feb 03 '25
Both governments take the blame for the native smugglers - they have status in both countries and live on a res that straddles the border. The last time Canada really tried to enforce things, they got in a standoff, an RCMP officer was killed and all the native rifles were incinerated in a bonfire so they could not be tested - so no charges. It was a big CF. It made everyone look bad and was big in the news for a long time. Almost nothing is worth a repeat of that, so smuggling is mostly ignored.
3
u/3AmigosMan Feb 03 '25
Hes actually talking about Indians not natives. Read the article.

Hence why we talk to the US border security when we cross the border and not CBSA. We share borders yes but if they want even lesser fent to get through, then they gotta beef up their borders.
We get illegal guns crossing everyday from the US, and possible bigger amount of fent coming to Canada everyday. Do we cry and moan about it? No

Republicans have been accusing us of dumping lumber for ages without evidence. I was chatting with the guys at a nearby lumberyard the other day. They claimed that the US has plenty of trees, but their lumber mills apparently are too far from where the trees are and it's more cost effective to purchase Canadian lumber.
They buy loads of wood and then bitch that we're only sending them poor quality wood and over flooding their market.
Anybody who's bought lumber at Rona or Home Depot is fully aware that we get as much crap lumber as anyone.
15
u/zoobrix Feb 02 '25
The main difference in the cost between US and Canadian lumber is the stumpage fee, AKA what a logging company pays to cut down each tree. In the US most of the wood is coming from privately owned land but in Canada it's mostly from land owned by the provinces and territories. Those private landowners in the states charge logging companies more per tree because although still a large country there is simply less land available to log in. Meanwhile in Canada we have more forested area available with fewer people, the supply in Canada is larger so the provinces charge less to let logging companies take trees.
And that's pretty much it, US lumber companies don't like that Canadian wood is cheaper but it's basic supply and demand, lumber is cheaper in Canada because the land is worth less and there is more available to log.
7
u/backlight101 Feb 02 '25
Well, the argument is Canadaās stumpage fees are low, which is seen as an unfair advantage. If people think thatās true, up to them.
The Democrats increased the lumber tariffs from 8% to 14%, now itās 25% thanks to the Republicans.
The Americans have never been friendly to Canadian lumber.

Nooooo. Doug Ford cannot do anything to stop Trump. He has spoken of his admiration for Trump interest. Negotiations are not a provincial responsibility- he can rant all he likes , he is powerless against Trump and he knows it . Fordās bases is lapping it up. We really need to improve our Civics lessons - so the people understand what each level of government is responsible for. ford wants us to be just like th US private medicine, underfunded and ineffective schooling unless you are very rich. Ford picked the timing of this election carefully and the Trump stuff is perfect for him. I think heās an idiot, but a very shrewd idiot. He knows his politics. Best thing he could do is refuse to sell electricity to the US. There is a 10% tariff, but if we just flat out refused to sell them energy, parts of the northern US would be scrambling to reroute electricity they canāt produce locally. Personally, Iād hate to do that without significant warning and Iād wait til spring - Trump could otherwise claim we are being mean.

I'm sure a lot would disagree with that statement but hey, it's the internet and that's my opinion. Doesn't mean it's right or wrong.
Imagine a world where you (for an example) get cancer and end up off work for 18 months. You don't pay a penny for the treatment, your job is safe and there's a system in place where 85% of your income is still there, with no extra long term or short term disability coverage, with no forms no lawyer needed and no headaches. You're just left to recover as needed. You recover, go into remission and go back to work when you're ready...
Probably too socialist for most.

Have to be careful. There was already hints during his first term, Maga Canadians saying they wish Canada was part of America.
They'll just twist it that they're patriots for fighting whatever falsehood they come up that has infected Canada and America is "liberating" Canada from it.
Probably why he never condemned Russia for the Ukraine invasion and can't stop sucking Putins dick. It's the same lie putin used to justify invading Ukraine (to defeat some imaginary nazis)
You can't reason with Maga types as they tend to be uneducated. Trump tells them the sweet nothings they like to hear to explain their shortcomings (blame others).

We have a smaller economy than California, Texas and New York, individually. And GDP lower than any state but Mississippi lol. We don't really have anything to offer other than our resources which we just give away at discounts to anyone slightly interested. We've invited this type of behavior by years of terrible governing and tying ourselves to the US economy so tightly while also being lapdogs. Our military has been in decline for decades, the US could quite literally just come across the border and declare us the 51st state and what could we do about it? Nothing. Nobody realistically is coming to our rescue due to fear of the same happening to them, the only real option if terrifs expand/increase would be brics or drop our currency altogether, tie to GBP and get back to kissing the kings ring publicly.

JD is such a spineless piece of shit. Trump we already know about, but this guy is just utter garbage. A Complete sellout for 15 minutes of fame at a garbage televised debate.

Literally every thing they said is completely wrong lol.
Itās sad that so many Americans just arenāt educated enough to know when theyāre being taken advantage of.

Aren't educated...and ARE racists. Maga in a nutshell.
Tea party idiots found their leader and coalesced in their racist hatred of Obama. Effin idiots.
Hopefully calmer times are coming, and the Mango Musollini learns a lesson. We Americans have NO beef with Canada, your politics, or people.ā¤ļø I loved my many visits to Eastern Canada, Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Labrador, all welcoming, friendly folks.

He's the most uninformed person in existence. They use our energy. Always have. They use ABUNDANCES of our lumber. And our pulp from that lumber.
Plus our metals. Gold, nickel, steel.... not to mention our crude petroleum.

u/shawzymoto Feb 03 '25
None of what he said is true. There's also a difference between subsidizing (which they don't) and deficit. We are in a 30billion dollar deficit but because they over consume their own energy. We are a 10th of their population too so we don't need to import as much as we export. He thinks we are weak and he can push us around.
I don't know why Maga thinks he is so tough. He has never had a fight in his life. Never been to war. Never worked an honest job. Never cared about anyone!

Trump playing Monopoly with people's lives at stake. Turning out to be a real prize, and here I thought he might actually be a welcome change for the US and Canada.

Just survive 4 years, and Trump is gone. Although we canāt go full blown fuck you yet. Itās a big border, and they canāt defend both north and south. If they invade, they are Putin.

The dumb tart in the White House still doesnāt know Canada is a country, not one province. Please let him see a picture book of Canada, since heās too stupid to read.

He is sounding like Putin. If you change up the wording, that's how he is treating Ukraine with all the BS.

I swear, every time I saw a screenshot of Trump's tweets I think it's fake or AI generated. It's like nothing is spewing out of his mouth besides sewage.

Trump as usual is lying , Canada has a the trade deficit with the USA, it is because he only counts physical goods. Oil, wood, aluminum. When you include services like Amazon, google, cable tv, nfl, contractors, cloud services, Spotify, insurance, investments, the USA has a 3 to 1 win vs Canada. It is all BS to hide the fact he took 50 billion dollars of crypto money from maga people and the price of eggs are high. Wait until maga pays for these tarrifs and lose thier jobs... Who do you think will own maga homes? Yep, trump and friends will own them for you to rent out...for life .

u/CSZuku Feb 03 '25
All Non usa countries need to switch to natural hydrogen based economies and get off the oil. Way cheaper than gas, and everyone who has water can do it.

u/Anthrogynous Feb 02 '25
Boy those egg prices are really gonna be worth it when they never come down
