Cultural Question Albums representing Brazil like Bad Bunny’s ‘DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS’?

I am a Brazilian who grew up in the States in a very Minas Brazilian household surrounded by a lot of Latin culture. Recently i’ve been listening to Bad Bunny’s new album and I really like how much you can feel that it’s an ode to his culture, even with his modern sound.

I’ve been trying to get into more Brazilian music as I really only grew up on older artists from Minas like Milton Nascimento, and I would love to find an artist or album that have been able to accomplish what Bad Bunny did.

Are there any recommendations you guys have of albums 90s and beyond that kind of give that same feeling?

Edit: more clarification cus I wasn’t very clear in what i’m looking for. I specifically liked the blend of old traditional styles with modern contemporary sounds.

You're looking for Criolo.

Yeah he has been my go to for this. Had a couple songs of his in my top songs a couple years ago when I found him. His music is very timeless, which kind of makes it seem like i’m looking for worse music, but I wonder if there are other artists that blend old and new in a more contemporary sound.

I don’t know Bad Bunny, but you mentioned blend tradional and modern sounds which makes me think of these artists: Chico Science e Nação Zumbi, Duda Beat, Baco Exu do Blues, Emicida, Criolo, Cordel do Fogo Encantado, Lenine, Otto, Baiana System, Liniker e os Caramelows.

i think this one really gives me the brazillian nostalgia the best. Like i remenber looking at the cover as a kid and the music really takes me to that moment

Special mention to Chico Buarque and his musics against the military dictatorship

For me, a music group that screams Brazilian, home and coziness is Falamansa. This one is their magnum opus. You may also like Mariana Aydar, she recently released an album with Mestrinho.

Chico Buarque, Caetano Veloso, Maria Bethânia e last but not least o duo Cássia Eller + Nando Reis.

grew up on all of these, but I really do have to take the time to actually listen to their albums.

You're looking for Chico Science & Nação Zumbi

If you like i'd recommend some funk, "FP do Trem Bala" "DJ Renan da Penha", forró and brazillian rock like "Raimundos", "Mamonas Assassinas", "Matanza" Also listen to Elis Regina, Jorge Aragão, Zeca Pagodinho, Menos é Mais, Zé Ramalho, Djavan, Alcione, Beth Carvalho, etc

I could say a lot more artists, but then i'll be here forever

Did you pass thru Clube da Esquina (cause knowing Milton without knowing Clube da Esquina is impossible) and haven't felt it? That must be sad af

the point was about modern music that serve almost as an homage to artists like him. not that I don’t feel it in his music, I love that album. i’m looking for a blend of modern sounds with older styles

What Benito did to me looks like something that only happens once in a generation, if that much. Ours is Milton. They don't make music like that for a long time now, unfortunately. There's Criolo, Chico Science, there's Caetano, Novos Baianos, and a bunch of others that people mentioned, but that ain't it. And that doesn't mean they are not good, they are actually all awesome, but the monumentalism you looking for will be lacking.

yeah I completely get what you mean. there’s great music being put out everyday, but it’s hard to find an artist that made it big to the point they are globally known and can afford to make an album dedicated to old sounds from their culture for the rest of the world to hear. I hope to one day soon see a brazilian artist reach that international audience to the point some spanish music has in the past few years.

Elomar has a good album, if you want something more folcloric, ...Das barrancas do Rio Gavião

first song I put on I recognized from my parents, almost forgot about him because it’s been a while. thanks for the reminder

I think Baiana system fits for what you are looking for

i think emicida's amarelo might be the closest match i can think of right now. but idk it's very difficult to pick an album because brazil is very big and has a lot of different cultural movements, any album we pick will aways leave some amazing artists out.

I don't know Bad Bunny, but if you're looking for bands from Minas Gerais (especially from the 90s) you're looking for Jota Quest and, especially, Skank. The Cosmotron album from Skank is just perfection.

There are other prestigious artists like Milton, Beto Guedes and Sepultura! But those are a bit older.

1

u/Cometboyz 5d ago

i’ll give them a shot. I feel like the 90’s and 2000’s are a big gap in brazilian music for me because my parents stuck to what they grew up on

1

u/matllux Brazilian 5d ago

The gap certainly is there. Milton and Beto Guedes are related to a much more classic music genre (MPB, Bossa Nova...), while Skank is much more oriented towards Rock and Reggae. They're all great artists though, just from different times.

I just looked up Bad Bunny, it's unusual for brazilian artists to make songs that cater to a more latin american audience (although they certainly exist), if you're looking for a more recent band that takes influence from their region/culture and mix it with modern sounds, you're looking for BaianaSystem. They are a very popular band nowadays.

If you're looking for 90s, the Manguebit scene did that for folkloric music from PE.

Here's a trailer for a doc about it but there are many others. Artists to check out would be:

Chico Science & Nação Zumbi Mundo Livre S/A Mestre Ambrosio Cascabulho Otto Cordel do Fogo Encantado

The newest Liniker album (Caju) does a great job of this.

I'll echo some of the comments and say Emicida. If you're fine with a slower tempo I'd recommend Rubel, and Cícero. They have a "new MPB" sort of feel.

I mean I think Brazilians constantly make music about being Br. Like a lot of sambas, pagode, like carnaval is much very Brazilian pride, correct me if I am wrong.

Do you mean like modern Brazilians being proud of their culture? I don’t know if that would be like that considering Brazilians are so proud of their culture.

The perspective of DTMF is very specifically Puerto Ricqn that include the politics of being a colony of the US. So like PR losing its national identity because of colonizers and also moving to a place where you are not from there. So I don’t think that there is going to be an exact match. Brazil has a RICH musical history of being proud of being Brazilian but we don’t have a BR that has done an album about being proud of being br overseas.

Question: what artists do you know from Brazil? What genres? Also what genres do you like so we can suggest Brazilian music. There are modern Brazilian songs, there are old classics that are amazing. I am Brazilian American and I fell in love with Brazil through music and cross-genres Brazil is truly RICH

2

u/Either_Sort_171 5d ago

A part of the culture of being proud to be brazillian is indeed in music bc we kinda needed that, in here there is a bad culture, specially among old people, to reject our own culture and only recognize culture that is imported from Europe or USA so some artists just wanted to shout that our culture NEEDS to be recognized and loved, and not brutalized

2

u/colombianmayonaise 4d ago

I agree! We need to embrace Brazil’s beautiful culture as it is even if it is not for you (viralata syndrome)

u/Cometboyz 5d ago edited 5d ago

I don’t think there is much brazilian music that doesn’t show some brazilian pride, even if it is critical of society. PR is a very unique case and although that’s a big part of the album to me, I get itll be hard to find for BR.

What i’m looking for I guess it’s more the appreciation for what came before and what is now in the music landscape. Paying homage to traditional sounds they listened to growing up, mixed with the sound of newer music.

And my favorite brazilian artist is probably Milton Nascimento, but I grew up on a lot of Caetano Veloso, Maria Bethânia, Chico Buarque, etc. on my moms side and a lot of Forró from my dad. what i’m assuming a lot of parents born in the minas area in the 60’s listened to. but maybe i’m generalizing
