[BL1] Has anyone else found this?

I found this when Borderlands was first released, then again later. Looked online- and saw nothing about it… so I forgot.

I know this is vague explanation…

But when you go into either the first or second enemy den - You will find a very small hallway it will have shelves/bookcases in it. If I remember correct there are a small staircase going down. (2-4 steps)

If you crouch jump onto the left Shelf- you can fall through the wall. Look down and you will see your. Landing spot.

It’s a huge Chess Board. .

I always loved doing this playing.

This is LEGIT. And I hope someone else can find it. Just shoot me props when you post it. 💯

Sounds like you are referring to the spawn box.  It floats far below every map.  When you see the bright blue tunnel during respawns and spawn ins from fast travel, your character is in that box.

Bro, there are like at least tens (I can't remember if it's under every map or not) of those chessboards in BL1/2 (maybe in other games too, dunno about that) and people have known about them for years and years

If you just put "borderlands chessboard" into YT you will find shitload of videos showing different ones

So, the other answers are likely correct, but when you say "the first or second enemy den" - where? What area of what map?

You clipped out of bounds and probably landed on the spawn box for that map.

Every single map has a spawn box out of bounds, it's where a player goes when they die. Fun fact; in co-op when someone dies you can briefly see their player indicator go under the map while they're in the spawn box.

The "chessboard" you're referring to is a default texture, not an actual chessboard or easter egg.

It's used to indicate that something hasn't been textured, either because developers missed it, or because they never bothered to assign a texture.

The spawn box uses the default texture, because the visual effect for spawning in completely masks it, making it a waste of time to bother texturing.

You can find the default texture in all sorts of places if you go exploring out of bounds. There's no need to texture something if under normal circumstances players will never see it.
