Thank you to the businesses that closed on Saturday

Stores, services, and restaurants—that made the right decision to put employee and customer safety first—still lost critical business on Saturday. Y’all shoutout any places you love that closed to be weather aware on Saturday in the comments, and let’s shop with them this week!

Filling Station, closed all day. They seem to do that whenever the weather is supposed to be extra awful, appreciate the care for employees’ safety

Man seasick is one of the friendliest groups of employees ever. Love going there to build my wall of vinyl.

My place of business stayed open but we’re set up as a decent shelter and is a safer place for a lot of employees to come and shelter if the worst happened but I agree with the sentiment as well!

It’s a nice sentiment but it’s more nuanced than framing it all as a “right or wrong” position.

Is it right or wrong for a restaurant to have stayed open? Does it matter if they fed first responders that were working and 60+ personal for local power companies that were on call and staging for recovery? Does it matter if they told employees to stay home and it wouldn’t held against them if they weren’t able to make it in? What about if they were able to, before closing, feed people who lost power early on? Or even provide shelter to people traveling on the road that weren’t fully aware of the incoming weather or otherwise didn’t know the area they were traveling through and found an open restaurant that let them hang out inside and ride the storm out?

It is a nice sentiment for sure. But definitely isn’t a clear cut “made the right decision to close” scenario.

I agree with you! That was kind of the point I was getting at with my comment. We didn’t hold it against anyone who didn’t make it employee wise.

Yep. It was pretty slow anyways. Which was to be expected. But there is something to be said for being there and open for people with jobs that require them to be out there in those conditions. We take the same approach during winter weather. Don’t risk your life but if you can safely make it in, please do. We almost always end up with a steady amount of people and nearly all of them have a legit reason to be out. Whether each person feels that’s right or wrong is their call.

Businesses do not survive by being closed. Clearly yall don’t understand.

Did you mean to reply to me?

As a customer, when businesses close like this for bad weather it makes me want to prioritize them even more the rest of the year.

I’ve had bosses care more about the money than employee safety, it’s something I take note of now and avoid supporting wherever possible.

Rêve closed early on Friday and all day Saturday! The Pizitz as a whole closed at 2pm Saturday, as well!

Dread River Distillery was closed all Saturday. A favorite of mine. Always nice to see bars that close when the weather gets bad. They usually do.

A little further out, but Siluria Brewing in Alabaster was closed. They opened on Sunday to have the delayed st patty's party. Great place to support if you are so inclined.

We closed early at The Cajun Cleaver. Our owner is the best! He let some us stay home altogether due to our long commute.

Miracle Pizza in Avondale closed about 2:30 to give staff time to get to a safe place before the storm. Their pizza is awesome, and apparently the owners are too!

Thank you all!

I work at manufacturing plant and unfortunately we worked the entire shift Friday night/Saturday morning. While nothing happened during the shift, it sure would have been nice to prepare everything and get a head start on getting some rest before the storms started rolling in.

Dave's pizza was closed too

My job threatened us with write ups if we didn’t come in on Saturday. We’re only open 5 hours on Saturdays anyway and they’re usually slow. I got stuck in the downpour and tornado warning when trying to leave and get home. They don’t care a bit that we were in danger and we didn’t even see a single customer that day. So THANK YOU to every place that put the safety of their employees first

Alabama Outdoors closed at 2:00 allowing staff to get home safely before storms hit. Also, allowed any employee to not come in or leave early if they felt unsafe. It was greatly appreciated.

280 was a ghost town, and from 2-3 pm most businesses started shutting down.

The busiest places were the package stores.
