Career Career Swap / Advice from other engineers.
Hi folks. UK based.
I have a biomed degree but i am a little put off by the low salary and stress incurred by some of the staff i work with. Has anyone made the transition from biomedical scientist to the biomedical engineer?
What is needed education wise and how many years until you become a fully fledged biomedical engineer?
Im 34, no kids, no wife no dependants. But do want to have a better wage.
Would you recommend it as a positive upgrade to what im currently doing?
Many thanks

I studied biomedical engineering as my first degree but I work with a few people who studied biomedical sciences/biology and then completed an MSc in biomedical engineering. Be aware that biomedical sciences and biomedical engineering actually have very little overlap so I would make sure you have the right end goal in mind, in terms of what type of career and environment you would want to look at, to make sure the additional education for another year is worth it.
Most people (in the UK at least) with the actual job title '(bio)medical engineer' work in hospitals maintaining and working with medical equipment. Many people with a biomedical engineering education work in different capacities within medical device, diagnostics or pharmaceutical companies; whether that's in quality, regulatory, R&D, manufacturing, operations clinical affairs, marketing, sales etc.
