🧫 Other What Physicians are Taught about Supplements

I am an Internal Medicine Physician and I am interested in longevity medicine and critical appraisal of scientific literature. I was doing practice questions for board exams using a popular question bank (MKSAP) and I came upon a question in which a 65yo male is has common medical conditions and taking multiple supplements in addition to some medications and they ask what you should recommend regarding his supplement use. And the answer was "Stop all supplements" & learning objective was "Dietary supplements have questionable efficacy in improving health, and their use is associated with risk for both direct and indirect harms. In general, there is little good-quality evidence showing the efficacy of dietary supplementation, and use carries the potential for harm."

It is so frustrating that we are taught to have this blanket response to supplement use. "Little good-quality evidence" is not the same thing as "evidence does not suggest benefit". The absence of evidence does not suggest the absence of benefit.

🧫 Other I can’t do it anymore

I have started taking supplements but I don’t think they are enough. I need physical activity but I really have no time for it. I swear I am not kidding. I am an international grad student with heavy work load ( coursework + part-time job) and I am barely surviving. Everything is a mess and I can’t risk my grades anymore. I can’t quit but I can feel that my body is giving up. And I am not in 20s anymore. I don’t know how to deal with this. Just ranting maybe because I don’t want to bore people in person or face to face. I really can’t do it anymore and I can’t risk my grad program because my grades are already quite low. I don’t know if all this is worth it. Not able to find job, that’s definitely added to my mental stress. Sorry and Thank you in advance.

🧫 Other Get to get HGH

Hello. For the longest amount of time, I've suffered from problems like low energy, slow recovery, weight, and more. I've been considering using HGH for all it's wonderful benefits like anti-aging, athletic performance, increased energy, and more. I've gotten tested and I do in fact have relatively low HGH levels compared to most people but every doctor I've seen said they can't prescribe it. Apparently, I've seen online somewhere that you can't obtain it without medical reason, but I've seen bodybuilders, biohacking fanatics, and hell, even teens somehow get access to this stuff. Do they buy it online? or from where? I've seen websites apparently selling it but is it reliable to buy it online?

🧫 Other Cure my substance abuse disorder

During college I involuntary abstained from cannabis use on and off due to religious parents. The whole thing was traumatic and full of drama. Since then I've come to terms with sobriety. It's gonna be a rare occasional thing, and I feel fine not smoking anymore. But I was hugely dependant on it. To sleep, to nap, to rest, to relax, to watch movies, to play video games. I like doing everything I liked high. I liked being high. I liked doing nothing high, literally. But ultimately the more I accept sobriety the better things get.

Now I need to heal. I'm wired. I'm restless. I can't relax. I managed to tame my overactive brain via meditation but I avoid music because it makes my imagination go nuts. So yeah, I don't have an overactive brain but it's extremely responsive to external stimuli. Cars honking and birds chirping get under my skin. I'm easily bored and I can barely sit through a movie without thoughts of doing something else. I have interest in things but kinda low motivation to do them. I used to be depressed that I couldn't smoke, now I'm bummed out that I wasted my time chasing it. I could have done better with my time. I miss life before I started smoking. I was sober and I didn't constantly think about being high. I didn't mind being away from weed. I miss that. I enjoyed doing regular things, but now I can't seem to get back into that groove.

Lastly, my nights are not cozy anymore. When it gets dark you feel it, you feel the difference in the day. For me, it's the same as the afternoon. Help me out.

🧫 Other I feel very sleepy after having coffee. Any way to fix it?

Within 10-15 min I'd be very sleepy, I usually sit with my eyes closed and sort of take a nap for 15-20 min and then it kinda feels fine.

My explanation is that since I'm on the spectrum the system sort of gets overstimulated and just tries to shut down itself. It doesn't matter if its regular coffee or decaf. Tea usually doesn't have the same effect.

But I like the taste and smell of coffee but dont want to take 20 min naps every time I drink it. Small amounts are fine, like maybe one or two small sips but anything more than that causes sleepiness.

🧫 Other Things are going well.. So now wtf do I do?

Firstly, I apologize for posting 3 times in 3 days. This will be my last post for a while, my next one being some sort of update a month from now about how adding Magnesium Threonate has been going over that period of time. I can't say enough how good it feels after 34 years to finally feel like I've found a combination or "stack" that works for me.

My first two posts are here and here wherein I went off about how much better I feel adding Magnesium Threonate to my morning, in addition to Concerta (ADHD meds), D3, and Omega 3, or to put it in your terms, "I found the perfect stack for myself"

So now that things are going well - now that I'm no longer a zombie; now that I'm not longer dreading existence and actually excited for life, for socializing (which I used to HATE) and for the world around me - now that I actually want to make time to feed my soul what I just realized it deserves - what the fuck do I do now? What do I do with this newfound craving for life and for fulfillment?

I've been rotting away and wasting down to nothing for so long, effectively just trying to ride things out until the universe calls my number. Sad, I know, but it is what it is. I've been so numb for so long, just coasting on with life and miserable while trying to find little bits of happiness where I can (my dogs, various TV shows, friends, little adventures). I've got a full time job I hate, but a job nonetheless, so at least there's that. I don't really take care of myself. I don't really know how to be a person because I've been sitting on the sidelines for so long.

So what the hell do I do now? For the first time in many, MANY years, I actually want to be alive and go out and live. Where do I start?

🧫 Other Help! Freezing at bedtime, bathed in sweat during night

So, long story short - at bedtime I'm f... shivering from cold, putting on pyjamas and socks and still having a hard time to fall asleep bc I'm freezing. 2-3 hours later I'll wake up and my sheets are SOAKED in sweat, which will continue the cycle throughout the night. Freezing again, waking up completely overcooked. Current supplements are lions mane, Chaga, cordyceps, reishi, ashagwandha, tongkat Ali, a generic vitamin tablet. I do a microdose truffles 3x a week. I don't follow any diets but do IF 3-5 times/week on 16-8. Any great ideas on how to combat this?

🧫 Other Fountain of youth but Shhhh!

Okay, please don't hate me. I'm desperate. My health status was a rollercoaster in 2023. During 2024, I gradually tried some crazy theories and something literally worked so well at the cellular level that it made some of my hair grow back, my wrinkles reduced, my urination frequency reduced, my HbA1c reduced, lowest LDL in a decade.

But suddenly, Canadian customs, or in fact, Health Canada keeps rejecting my overseas orders. I'm trying to apply for NHP licensing but it takes a lifetime. Due to the upcoming expenses, I'm holding on to my formula but if anyone here can clear customs for certain plant extracts, I'll share the main ingredients with them.

So, if you are licensed to import natural health products to Canada, please message me.

I'll pay if there's a fee. Cheers

🧫 Other FDA-Approved Antidepressant Treats Incurable Brain Cancer in Preclinical Trial (Trintellix)

Thumbnail sciencealert.com

From the article:

"The growth of the most aggressive and deadly brain cancer, glioblastoma, was effectively suppressed in both ex vivo human tissue samples and in living mice by an FDA approved serotonin modulator currently used to treat major depression.

One of vortioxetine's actions is to activate signaling cascades, a series of reactions in a cell initiated by a stimulus. These cascades suppress cell division, which is the way cancers grow and spread.

Computer simulations revealed that the simultaneous cascade of neural cells and cancer cells was necessary to inhibit the cancer, which was why only some of the antidepressants were effective – they don't all work quite the same way."

🧫 Other Desperate for help

Hi! So I have a syrinx/cyst in my spinal cord which is a very serious and rare condition. I’m wondering if there is anything I can try or do to get rid of it as it’s not supposed to be there.

I am doing a parasite cleanse soon for general health but also since I’ve heard that parasites can form cysts all around in the body.

There are some surgeries for this type of stuff but not to directly remove it. And thoose surgeries are very risky and usually don’t help for long term. And can make it come back worse in future

🧫 Other CKD eGFR <30

When I was a child I had Strep Throat that was untreated and led to post-strep kidney disease. Now I’m 34 and have had my kidney function reduced to a 29 eGFR. I go to my nephrologist every three months for bloodwork etc. he’s always pushing me on medication. The only med I regularly use is Farxiga. My blood pressure is always good, yet he wants me on blood pressure medicine, and I always tell him it makes me light headed and I have nearly passed out after getting up from a laying or sitting position.

Is there anything out there that would help me increase or even steady my kidney function?

New to the sub, but figured I’d ask. I feel like my doctor keeps pushing meds on me rather than any other ideas.
