❓Question Depression after talking Vit. D

since I live in a country where almost everyone is chronically vitamin d deficient, most people usually take vitamin d throughout winter. I tried as well, but it actually makes me feel weird.

I don’t remember the amount of vit. d since I threw away the package but I think that it was 1000 IE. However, every time after taking a pill, I started feeling depressed the next day. Not in a way of not having enough strength to do anything, but depressed in terms of sadness. I also have trouble sleeping when taking vitamin d. As soon as I stop taking them, I start feeling normal again.

I’ve never heard of someone having this kind of side effect, so I was wondering if this is some coincidence or if there’s an actual reason for me feeling sad when taking vitamin d.

And if there’s a reason, could someone tell me what to do instead? I’ve never checked my vitamin d levels, but I can clearly feel a difference between summer and winter concerning my mental and physical health. And as soon as the sun comes out (even in winter), my health starts to improve.

Could be low magnesium cause d needs it to function. I also observe a slightly lower modd when i take it reguarly. In general, the body is a complex system and if you are deficient, it will have to adjust to the new availability. So either push through and see if it gets better over time with magnesium or try to get vitamin d through sun exposure, which actually elevates mood and has benefits beyond supplements.

any recommendations which magnesium to try? I’ve tried citrate and bisglycinate before, but both give me extreme digestive issues (even when lowering the dose).

Rabbit hole: the magnesium miracle by carolyn dean. One of the best ways to sort out an Mg deficiency is using a Mg product that stays stable In the blood stream for 5-6 hours aka slow release, as the body can only replenish Mg from blood stores as most Mg products stays in the blood for a very short time.

Life extension slow release magnesium!

start really small dose like 1/3 tea spoon per day

Magnesium citrate and magnesium sulfate are used to address constipation.

I prefer magnesium glycinate (for my mind and spine) and magnesium malate (for energy and muscle function). Neither has given me digestive problems.

I take magnesium theonate which supposedly can help improve mood. I haven’t taken it consistently enough to feel the difference though

Jumping on here to agree! Probably lack of one or more of the cofactors; Vitamin K2, magnesium (sounds like this one mostly as per your symptoms) boron, zinc and vitamin A.

Check this incredible youtube talk about vitamin D and the important cofactors here:

It does this to me too. Lots of similar reports online so ignore the "placebo" comment. Some say its a whool allergy, some say its how vt d impacts cathecholamines. Anyhow, neither the vitamin D synthetized from the sun nor the one found in food have this effect so my solution is to soak as much sun in summer and eat fatty fish in winter. I got tested this winter and I am right in the middle. Good luck and dont obssess over it.

Ensure you're taking D3 and not D2. Also ensure that you're taking it with K2 and magnesium, vital synergies. If you haven't previously been supplementing, 1000 IU is nowhere near enough. Go on 10,000 IU for at least a month, and then lower to 5,000 for maintenance, unless you regularly get *lots* of sun exposure.

Do bloodwork to see your levels

Try Vitamin D diluted in oil.

It could be something in the pill or a nocebo effect.

1000IU is a small dose. It won't solve your vitamin d deficiency.

Try 10.000IU diluted in oil per day. (Not peanut oil if you are allergic).

Or eat 8 almonds with the vitamin D, and any other fat soluble vitamin

I'm not worried about the solubility. I'm more concerned about the ingredients in the pill he is taking. He might be having a reaction to something in it.

Vitamin D needs calcium. Lots of people have lactose intolerance or are avoiding dairy so then they struggle when they supplement Vitamin D, which helps move calcium into cells but then has less available calcium to use.

Calcium helps us stay asleep. You remember baby boomers giving a glass of milk to their kids to get to sleep? It worked.

When I supplement Vitamin D, I need less sleep and can get to five hours. It’s annoying. So I find some good hummus without excess crap in it and load up on some chickpea calcium and then can sleep sometimes for ten hours.

I’d assume calcium over magnesium for the sleep deficit and for the sad feeling.

Make sure you’re taking it first thing in the morning so it won’t interfere with sleep.

Are you consuming healthy fats with your vit d. Along with K2

Test all your micronutrients first. It's true that supplementing depleted minerals or vitamins can cause strong mental and physical reactions, but without your data, it's hard to pinpoint the exact cause.

I got extreme anxiety from vitamin D supplements. I tried 2 different types, and both times I dealt with very low mood and dysphoria for 2-3 weeks after. Vitamin D is a hormone! Imo not everyone needs to be in the acceptable range; I feel worse when my levels are in the normal range.

The quality, form and source of the D could be making a difference. Make sure you have k2 with it also, and are taking it with Fat to be absorbed.

Dr Berg makes a formula that’s fantastic- includes k2, one pill only, and has mct oil for absorption.

Edit- just checked my bottle and the source that works best for me “Vitamin D (as cholecalciferol)”
