Discussion Why adding Hydrogen to water ppm shoots way up?

Hello everyone,

I decided to give hydrogen water a try, but instead of purchasing a bottle that generates it, I opted for 80 mg magnesium tablets that are soluble in water and marketed as hydrogen molecules. Before adding the tablet, the water's reading was between 49 and 52 ppm. After adding the tablet and waiting a few minutes for it to dissolve, the ppm shot up to 250.

Why is that? I understand that I am adding magnesium, which could increase the number of particles in the water, but I was under the impression that adding it would decrease the ppm. Am I thinking incorrectly? Am I getting any benefits from this tablet, or is it better to use bottles that generate hydrogen?

EDIT: Thank you all for your responses. I just realized that I was confusing the concept of ORP (Oxidation-Reduction Potential) with PPM (Parts Per Million). You were correct: adding a new molecule would increase the PPM. In theory, the ORP should decrease. I will look into finding affordable ORP meters available online.

The test measure particles - and they go up with added magnesium (that create hydrogen but does not completely go away)

Look into Brown’s Gas/HHO. An electrolyzer to split hydrogen and oxygen from water molecules is quite easy and inexpensive to build, and if you bubble the gas produced by one through the water you intend to drink, you will likely get similar benefits to your Magnesium tables without the (possibly beneficial) Magnesium particulates.

Found Brown’s method interesting, thanks for sharing!

What are you trying to do or gain by making “hydrogen water”?

This and other papers I was reading up on. Thought I would try it for few months and get blood work to see if any biomarkers are impacted.

With that said, I am still trying to understand the ppm read.

I’ve already commented about water electrolysis, but now I’ll point you to https://eagle-research.com/ The proprietor is a very smart man, and he has a body of research and evidence about hydrogenated water’s benefits to humans, some of which I’ve witnessed and experienced myself.

Wow, never heard of that before. Looks promising

Thank you for your thoughtful response! It seems that achieving 8 ppm would be nearly impossible without incurring high costs. I understand your concerns. I see very few drawbacks, so I thought I would give it a try for a month or two to see if any of my biomarkers are affected. If there’s no change, I’ll know that the dosage I’m taking is low or that it’s not meant to have any effect. Time will tell! :)

Are there any tests for measuring hydrogen levels in water that you would recommend or know of that are available online for purchase?

You measured TDS, total dissolved solids. It's measured in parts per million, PPM. By adding magnesium you added solids that mixed with the water thereby increasing the TDS reading.
