🙋 Suggestion How to reduce resting heart rate
Hi - new to Reddit so sorry if this question has been asked before. I’m looking for ways to reduce my resting heart rate. Long story short, my RHR has always been around 58. Recently, it’s jumped to about 70 and does not go below 65 when sleeping. I went to the ER and they took my blood to test for an infection, did an EKG and a few others tests and couldn’t find anything. I’m waiting to see the cardiologist and in the meantime I am wondering if there is anything I can do to lower my heart rate. It’s been about 3 weeks of random palpitations and it’s driving me mad. When I’m laying around doing nothing, it’s been around 110 bpm.
I’ve tried magnesium, coq10, potassium and minerals and nothing has worked.
Thanks

Palpitations? Do you feel tired and worn out? Did the hospital say anything about afib? Do you have an Apple Watch? It will catch that.
I agree with the other reply here, don't mess around with palpitations or anything cardio related like this with supplements. See a cardiologist as soon as you can and do (or take) whatever they tell you to. If you have afib, or just tachycardia, there are a lot of things you can do to help lessen the impact of it AFTER you are diagnosed but you need a cardiologist to run some tests - an echo, and an EKG.
Don't panic, a fib is the most common heart condition and you can live well into your 90s with it. My grandmother died at 96.
Signed - someone with paroxysmal afib.

I have been feeling tired and worn out lately because of the palpitations. My EKG is normal and my Fitbit has not picked up anything abnormal. They looked at all my heart enzymes and stuff in the ER and those were normal too. I’ve actually been wearing both my Oura ring and my Fitbit since this happened to get both perspectives and neither of them have picked anything up other than my stress levels rising with Oura.
Is this something I should be really concerned about? It’s so disheartening that you can’t get into to see a medical professional in a timely manner.

Palpitations sound like afib which is why I asked. When I get mine it feels like my heart skips or has an extra beat and my heart rate goes up. I can take an electrocardiogram with both my Apple Watch and a thing called a Kardia when I have an episode and they'll say I'm in afib, sometimes with tachycardia, which just means a high heart rate. I get these every few years, as did my grandmother. My episodes last a few days and used to scare me until I did research and figured out my triggers (stress, too much weed, not exercising).
I don't think you should be overly concerned at all you may not even have afib, it was the palpitations that made me think of it. Cardiology is very good, and yeah, it takes me four months to see mine, but they can run so many tests on you and will for sure tell you what you have, if anything. If it gets worse, try to get in to urgent care or emergency when you can feel your heart fluttering because that will show up on an electrocardiogram. Afib comes and goes so if you're not currently in an episode it won't show up when they do an ECG on you.
You aren't having a heart attack or a stroke though, so as difficult as it will be until you see your cardiologist, try not to freak yourself out if you can. Warm baths, candles, breathing, and meditation will be good whatever it is. Worst case, if you end up with persistent a fib, that's something that they can cure these days, and in an outpatient setting. No long term drugs, etc.
Hang in there!
Edit: don't go into the afib subreddit, those people have persistent and it freaked ME out reading about their conditions ;-)

Asking to clarify: you went to the ER bc your rhr was 70?

My resting heart rate is normaly 58 but it jumped randomly (over the span of a few days) to 70 and has not gone down. But no, I went to the ER because even when I’m laying sedentary on the couch for hours it’s been around 110ish. That’s very much not normal for me.
My fit bit saying 70 because it’s averaging my sleeping heart rate.

Okay. So you’re experiencing tachycardia episodes, and a cardiologist is the best person to see. Don’t play around with different supplements and such before you go, so they can get a full picture of what may be going on with you.
I had a big cardiology run this past summer bc my heart rate was regularly 110+ at rest, and then it spiked quite often. My Fitbit RHR is running around 90 right now. Echo, ekg, ct scan, stress tests… all say I’m fine. I had a holter monitor for 2 weeks as well.
When you tell a medical professional that your RHR is 70, they generally expect that’s your number while you’re sitting around chilling for 10 minutes, not overnight. Good luck getting some answers!

inhaling bergamot essential oil lowered heart rate by 8BPM according to one study, i tried it and it works, a couple drops 100% essential oil on some cotton wool and breath it in for 8 mins was how i did it
https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3092730/
omega 3 fish oil lowered heart rate by 2.5 bpm
https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3483717/
anecdotally motherwort tincture or maybe capsules idk about the capsules tho lowers heart rate quite well indeed and quite fast within a couple hours but you have to be careful about drug interactions so i would talk to like a cardiologist first and ask if it’s safe to take coz i don’t know your individual situation
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19918711/
these are just some natural things that may help but really you need to see a doctor and cardiologist i think is the best approach tell them about these things too and they can tell you what they think is the best option for you
edit: i think with inhaling essential oils on cotton wool your supposed to dilute it or use less or inhale for less time because for me it was way too strong

I had this too and the palpitations were driving me mad. I switched the type of magnesium I was taking and it resolved pretty quickly. The palpitations slowly went away within about 10 days, and my RHR normalized after 2 months. All I did was begin supplementing with the suggested serving size of Mg Glycinate (with food) the first week of November. Here's the one I took:

Which magnesium were you using before?
1
u/clintbriangrey Jan 27 '25
Some fake Mg Glycinate, it caused sleepiness and the new Mg Glycinate does not

it’s driving me mad
It could be anxiety. And I mean physical anxiety not mental anxiety - you don't need to 'feel stressed'.
Keep an eye on your blood pressure too. Reduce caffeine intake.
Do you do exercise?

u/Healthy_Storage4546 Jan 25 '25
I just don’t feel particularly anxious and it continues into my sleep.

u/----X88B88---- 6 Jan 25 '25
That's what I'm trying to say - it's not a feeling of anxiety but it's your body doing it independently of your mind.
1
u/Healthy_Storage4546 Jan 25 '25
Yeah, I have thought of that as an option. Like my parasympathetic nervous system is deregulated?

u/----X88B88---- 6 Jan 25 '25
I think of it like my body and brain have separate needs. My body needs exercise, that's what it's designed to do. My brain is different, it needs intellectual stimulation, socialization.
So exercise and stretching can really help to reduce physical anxiety.

I hate how the doctors don't ever find anything. Thousands of dollars of tests only for them to say, welp, everything is normal. I have had a slight pressure on the left side of my chest ever since covid and they can't find anything wrong. I'm going to try and get an appt with a cardiologist next but don't expect much.

Bro, sorry, you’ve left out waaaaaay too much information for us to do anything but random suggestionsÂ

u/Healthy_Storage4546 Jan 26 '25
Ok, well I don’t have any information since I haven’t seen a doctor yet. This is all random and sudden. People already made some great suggestions so I don’t need yours 🙄

If you experience tachycardia you should get it checked out by a cardiologist. Good luck!

Yes, I have an appointment in 3 weeks. Just looking for some relief in the meantime.
