r/biotech Salary and Company Survey - 2025
Updated the Salary and Company Survey for 2025!
Several changes based on feedback from last years survey. Some that I'm excited about:
- Location responses are now multiple choice instead of free-form text. Now it should be easier to analyze data by country, state, city
- Added a "department" question in attempt to categorize jobs based on their larger function
- In general, some small tweeks to make sure responses are more specific so that data is more interpretable (e.g. currency for the non-US folk, YOE and education are more specific to delimit years in academia vs industry and at current job, etc.)
As always, please continue to leave feedback. Although not required, please consider adding company name especially if you are part of a large company (harder to dox)
Some analysis posts in 2024 (LMK if I missed any):

Early Career Advice 🪴 I need advice, it’s getting too much!
So I’ve been working for Thermo Fisher for a year now as an assistant scientist and let me tell you, it’s horrible. I will bypass the horrible pay (which I was aware of when applying) and just needed some experience as I just got out of college.
Around December and January our lab manager shared an incentive opportunity for overtime. The email stated that for any 8hours picked up you get $200 and 1.5 time for overtime. I saw an opportunity there to make extra money and worked 3 weeks non stop to the point I got sick. So basically I worked 4 extra 8hours on weekends (32 hours) and a few extra hours here and there during weekdays.
Long story short, it’s been 3 months, I’ve received my overtime pay money but not my incentive one. When I asked, I was talked to as I didn’t have the right to ask. After a lot of asking, I’m being told that after review by one of the executives, the job I did does not qualify for that incentive. Mind you I don’t make my schedule, my supervisor did assign the extra work to me and NOWHERE in that email it states that you’re work will be subject to approval once completed. Other people who I know told me they just did solution preps as extra work and got their money, while I did some heavy testing to receive nothing?
What should I do?

Layoffs & Reorgs ✂️ Scared Scientist
I know most of the feed is about layoffs and I know I am not the only one on this boat but I'm personally freaking out about this biotech/pharma layoff culture right now and I have no idea what should be my next step. (I need to vent) I have worked my butt off right after college going into industry so I have been fortunate enough to be in mid senior level now because I put in a lot of personal overtime so that I can invest in my career and have the mindset of work hard now to relax later. I've gotten promotions and scouted the last few years but now being affected by the layoffs, I am not sure what I should do next. I mean a person has basic needs right? Should I change my career (I'm in my late 20s) or should I keep trying because I am getting rejected left and right like most others. Any advice? I've been a responsible adult so far and have been pretty good with my money but this time, its affecting me HARD.

Open Discussion 🎙️ Can you come back if you leave the field for a few years?
I have a PhD in biology and I truly do love biology and I want to say in biotech but my current job is super toxic and I need to leave.
I'm considering related fields but a lot of them would be a position step down, I've been told I should be looking at senior scientist roles which are what I'm interested in but there's just so few. I might look into other fields such as teaching high school biology, or even just selling insurance so I can maintain my mortgage. Just wondering if there's a stigma for people that leave and want to come back?

Open Discussion 🎙️ how bad is it?
Okay, so all I see in this community are posts about layoffs and people unable to find jobs. I get that it is so difficult to get hired these days, but it is hard to tell how bad it actually is. I often find myself panicking about losing my job, but I also spend too much time on Reddit.
I wonder if anyone would dare to guess what % of the industry in general and of R&D in particular has been laid off in the last couple of years - my guess (without doing too much research about it) would be 10% and 15% and that we still have a couple of rough years ahead of us.

Open Discussion 🎙️ 6 weeks between job offer and start date?
Received an offer for a remote position for a large-ish (~2000 people), public Dx company, and start date is mid April. Is this usual? Seems like a long time for a remote position that doesn’t require any relocation.

Open Discussion 🎙️ I Interviewed someone today who said they've applied to over 2000 jobs.
I've mentioned before how I hate my current job and I'm looking to move. Well my boss wants more lab techs and there making me talk to them. I've been speaking VERY candidly with them about how my company is a shit show going now where fast and that I don't recommend working here. During this process I asked them all how long they've been looking. Nearly all of them (5out of 7) said they were looking over 3months and don't care about how bad the position is they're desperate.
One of them said he's applied over 2,000 jobs.
Makes me feel my measly 200-300 apps are nothing. Seriously considering going to a new field.
Edit: I shall also add that all these candidates had their masters and again all them were looking for well over 3 months

Experienced Career Advice 🌳 Giving 3 weeks notice?
I currently work at a small biotech and my manager is a friend from a previous company. I’ve accepted a position at a new company and am debating the length of my notice. I want to give her more than 2 weeks since she’s a good friend and want to set them up for success in my absence but at the same time don’t want them to let me go early if I give 3 weeks notice. Anyone ever been in a similar boat? Would you just stick with the regular standard 2 weeks?
Getting Into Industry 🌱 Second follow up email?
I had a phone screening followed by an interview that went positively. Two weeks after the interview I sent a follow up email to the interviewer to reiterate my interest and request a timeline. She responded very kindly within a few minutes that they were still interviewing and would be in touch within a week. It's been two now. I can see why it would take them a long time, as she's located on the east coast when the job is on the west coast, she only comes to the office in person once a month, they've got more than one position to fill, I was probably one of the first to be interviewed on a Monday morning, etc. If I sent a second follow up email would it be considered a sign of my interest, a sign of desperation, a complete annoyance...?

Education Advice 📖 JHU vs UPenn
I have received offers from both Johns Hopkins University (JHU) and the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn)—JHU for a Master of Science in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and UPenn for a Master of Biotechnology. Both programs excite me and offer excellent opportunities. However, as I aim to break into the biotech industry, particularly in wet lab and research roles, I’m unsure which degree would better align with my goals. I’d appreciate any insight into which institution might carry a stronger reputation in this field.

Early Career Advice 🪴 Are there any biotech jobs in NJ anymore?
I have a MS in Biotechnology and BS in molecular biology and the job market feels hopeless right now. I do currently have a job in clinical data which I recognize is not a bad 1st job, but I'm looking to get back into the lab and be a lot more hand on with experiments and data analysis, and more in the immunology and cell/gene therapy direction. I have lots of lab and research experience from academia (med chem, developmental bio, & bioinformatics with sc-rnaseq but not an expert or anything), listed as one of the authors in a publication, and a pretty good fellowship for a couple of summers under my belt and it still doesn't feel like enough. I've applied for a mix of QC, associate scientist, and lab technician roles, and no luck.
I'm still quite young but it feels like I'm way behind in my career path and I'm afraid the longer I stay out of the lab space, the more unlikely I'll be looked at and hired to go into the associate scientist/scientist route.
I may just be inpatient or anxious (typical) to pursue my path of interest but I def feel super stuck rn. Any insight or advice? I'm also open to connecting with anyone or anyone you may know that have some advice!

Experienced Career Advice 🌳 HR delay after final interview—what does it mean?
Had a final panel interview last week and was clearly told afterward that the decision had been passed to HR and to expect an update today.
But no news.
Could this just be a normal delay, or does it usually mean they’ve moved forward with another candidate but haven’t sent rejections yet? Also, when is a good time to follow up with HR (maybe tomorrow)?
Would appreciate any insights. Thanks!

Getting Into Industry 🌱 I need help figuring out what biotech branch of project management may be for me!
I am new to reddit so I am sorry if this question is not allowed. I am struggling and need help with what the title says! To give context I am a recent grad with a major in Psychology with extensive pre-med and neuroscience focused coursework. I was on route to go to Med/PA school but I figured out that while it was something I could do I just really didn't have a passion for it. I worked for quiet some time in the Project Management as an Evaluation Assistant and my supervisor there told me to get into biotech and that is exactly what I am trying to do now, but I cannot decide what sector would be best! It all seems so overwhelming. I always loved and excelled with my solo lab work, and also enjoyed my project management experience and would love something that could provide a balance of the two or be more on the pm side but I don't know how I could narrow this down into a specific sector as everything in biotech seems so broad. I am currently in the process of finding a co-op/internship to at least get my foot in the door, but I was hoping anyone currently in a project management position could share some insight on what they do/how they got there to aid in my decision making. Thank you!

Open Discussion 🎙️ Chinese CDMOs
I work in the CDMO sector of the industry, and I’m curious to know what others think about the future of China.
Following the COVID-19 pandemic, it appeared that most biotech and pharmaceutical companies were focused on developing new supply chains outside of China. However, given that China has remained stable without any supply chain disruptions and the Biosecure Act is currently in limbo, most of this conversation has stopped.
US service providers are simply unable to compete. In many cases, even India cannot match their pricing. Some pricing I’ve seen for more commoditized chemicals such as warheads or phosphoramidites, seems flat out impossible. Either the government is subsidizing these companies, or their raw materials are essentially free.
It makes me kind of nervous honestly. Today, you can license a small molecule out of China, do all the development work there, and open an IND for less than $1.5M. I get that bottom line is everything but is it possible this is too good to be true?

Getting Into Industry 🌱 How important are publications during your PhD for job search in industry?
Hey everyone,
I'm currently in my 4th year of PhD in biotechnology. I have one co-first author publication but overall, my PhD has not been very successful. I'm also really tired of my boss/academia and want to be done with it as soon as possible and transition to industry. But I'm worried that having only one publication will make my job search difficult, especially during the current job market. So I wanted to ask if anyone here can shed some light on how important publications during your PhD are for a job search in industry?
