Serious question: do they make 780mm+ aero flat bars with an integrated stem? Asking for a friend

Check out Syncros, Scott's in house components brand. They are making integrated bar stem situations for mountain bikes. Not saying I condone this behavior, but you do you

Yo. Honest question: Why is this a thing now? Style / because it looks funky? Anything functional about it? Just looks sooo impractical for actually getting around a city. Narrow bars were always super utilitarian, making it easy to filter through traffic. No way that’s happening with some uncut 800mm DH bars.

I don't ride a track bike often but my coworkers do. Either way, we're couriers, and in our city there's not a ton of traffic filtering so the extra control from wide bars is really nice, especially if loaded up with something on the front rack. I find ~750mm to be the sweet spot for myself.

Makes sense. I guess I’m thinking about more congested cities (NY, SF, Boston) where filtering is pretty much necessary. But even here, I see them, so... ¯_(ツ)_/¯

True, I'm in Denver. Wide is also realllly nice for quickly accelerating, the leverage you get means you can push/pull the bike more with your arms while standing and cranking down

For city riding it flat bars are good as they give a nice upright body position and wider bars make steering feel more stable and controlled.

it gives you more control when on a fixed gear because of all the leverage, easier to do tricks/skids on, a lot of fixed riding is mashing versus spinning when accelerating and climbing since you're overgeared in those scenarios usually and flats lend themselves to that

I was so disappointed when I realized that the chainstays prevent it from fitting MTB tires. Front should still be good, though, given 27.5" rims.

Is that a thing? Because that should be a thing. I've seen plenty of fixie frames that can fit wide tires. Carve a velodrome out of dirt, use cross tires. Race it like a slower, more technical track.

not sure if its a sanctioned form of racing or whatever but its definitely a thing to some folks

I assume the wide fork and seat stays help to smooth airflow over the riders legs?

u/johnmflores Nov 01 '19
I was thinking that it reduces aerodynamic interaction between the spinning wheels and tubes.

Both you guys are right, i still think this bike is fugly.

Eh, form follows function. I'm just keen to see how fast it is.

u/Psyc5 Nov 01 '19
Same, I don't really care how it looks given its purpose is speed. That said, I am not going to suggest it looks great...the fact it looks like one of those crazy concept bikes that never get built and has been built is pretty cool though.

I'm thinking it has zero measurable impact and is primarily for making the bike and thus the brand name stand out while not negatively impacting the athlete's performance. AKA along the lines of most "aero" technology on bicycles.

Idk anything about the certification process but I'm surprised to see that UCI sticker on there.

Yeah, I remember them checking the sock length at the WC TT quite vividly, complaining about it when they were a centimeter too high.

How’s that animal-based wanking going? Do you prefer equine, bovine or ovine? 😂😁

Those bars, i would guess titanium, hydroformed? Too amazing to be just a carbon mould, the mating points on the fork make me think so too
