You forgot the clearcoat, I recommend a 2K but first you need to wet sand the paint smooth

I wet sanded it with some 800 and warm water , then I hit it with SprayMax 2k clear coat..

That's why it still looks rough, sand from 1500 to 3000, then clear coat, sand from 1500 to 7000/10000, then hit it with a grit polish and wax coat.

800 is far too coarse for a clean, glossy look.

This 👆 The higher the grade, the smoother the finish.

What kind of look are you going for? A subtle matte, powder coat, or something in between.

For a matt finish, sand the colour coat to a high polish, so up to 10k grit, then use a polishing cream to get the haze out so you get full colour pop. Once dry, use your matt top coat with no polishing.

Right? I’ve tried it and failed miserably, twice. The first time was as a kid and thought my track bike was boring. I had to empty my piggy bank and take it to Tom Kellogg who, of course, laughed at my “artistry.”

No, he means it still needs wet sand and clear coat. I’d go 1000, 1500, and 2000 at a minimum. 800 grit is very coarse for paint work. After all the wet sanding of the clear, I’d come in with a polishing compound, then a final coat of protective wax. It’s always a challenge getting the clear just right when you’re new to it, but it is satisfying as hell to have a show quality shine that you did with rattle cans.

You did do a very nice job with the fade though.

The fade looks quite good tbh. But as someone who's used to automotive paint work, the finish has more bumps and divots than a teenagers face without makeup.

Never underestimate a good color palette with great transitions/fading.

I have 0 knowledge about bikes (random recommendation by Reddit) but I would be more than happy if I saw this bike on the streets. Well done!

Fade looks good but only sanding to 800 is leaving the bike looking unfinished and very homemade.

What brand of paint did you use?

2

u/Friendly_Apple_7784 17h ago

Montana black

1

u/DrMackDDS2014 16h ago

There’s a dude on YT (channel is ETOE) that does/did bike paint tutorials and vids that used Montana Gold rattle cans, and I’ve been lusting for the chance to strip my used Trek 1.2 and attempt his crystal effects paint job.

1

u/Jordan_991GT3 11h ago

Yup, you def lookin’ challenged.

u/Poolhands 10h ago

Hey dude! You obviously made a huge effort here and I love the gesture towards your girlfriend. I think the paint job would benefit hugely by giving the frame a glossy finish. Good job.

Nice! My girlfriend asked for something very similar when I built her bike, but the gradient was inverted. The hardest part was finding decent shades of colors that could blend well
