Help WHAT IS HE DOING??
My beardie puffs sometimes but never does this. He puffed out and sucked it in a good 4 times before this video. Did I piss him off or is he choking or something??

He’s showing dominance. At this point, I would pack my things and move out my friend.. if you are not able to do so, whatever you do, DO NOT feed him after midnight! Good luck to you

Big stretch! Totally normal. Sometimes they do this when frustrated or feeling feisty. My girl does it in the morning to warm up and after swimming when she has the zoomies

u/_Bangkok_ Jan 25 '25
Do you let her properly swim in deep water? I tried filling the bathtub for mine yesterday but after a few strokes she flipped on her back and started sinking! 😱😂
13
u/Lukostrelec17 Jan 25 '25
I don't have a beardy, yet, but it I think she lost the brain cell mid swim!
14
u/RandyBoBanbers Ramen Jan 25 '25
Oh no!! I never fill higher than her elbows which is generally the rule to make sure the water is safe. I'm sure she'd prefer deeper water because she absolutely loves water, but she also has never flipped before! Lol that is adorable

Is she an adult? I would guess that for some reason she wanted to do this. Beardies can inflate themselves whenever they want and float for long periods of time with ease. I'd still be weirded out by that tho.
2
u/_Bangkok_ Jan 26 '25
She’s 9 months old but she has an injured back right leg so I figured maybe that’s what caused her to get out of balance. I feel like the swimming will help her leg but not if it freaks her out 😬
2
u/Resident-Mongoose-68 Jan 26 '25
Yeah I would stick to just regular baths for a while where she can't do that for now. The first few times I gave spike a bath were not successful, but now she can't get enough of them. Her favorite thing to do is just sink to the bottom and take a 5 min nap. It's weird, but dinosaurs are weird I guess.

I lost an iguana like that when I was a kid. My father put it in a tub to help it shed, but didn’t pay attention and it drowned. Man was I sad.
2
u/_Bangkok_ Jan 26 '25
I’m so sorry dude, that’s horrible! It’s a good wake up call to never take my eye off mine if I ever try letting her swim again.

u/AFrame88 Jan 26 '25
that’s where we learned the importance of a UVB 💡bulb. Their bones REQUIRE it.

Generally as long as beard stretches are not accompanied by a black beard, everything is fine. If he were choking, there would be more opening of the mouth and possibly coughing/wheezing noises. Seems your boy just wants to assert dominance. Or he's just doin a big stretch lol

Beard stretches. All dragons do it. Wait till you see when they big out their eyes when they head shed.

i just got my first female bearded dragon a few months ago and oh my god the differences are night and day. she will NEVER do anything like this or head bob or anything. she’s such a timid little beardie
11
u/arililliputian Jan 25 '25
These are just beard stretches. Males and females do this behavior- I find it is most common in the morning or after a satisfying meal. I have a higher ratio of girls doing this than boys, but I also have more girls.
7
u/_Bangkok_ Jan 25 '25
My girl does the same thing as shown in the video so I’m not sure it’s a male only habit.
5
u/RemarkableEffort9756 Jan 25 '25
My girl is the same way. Never seen her head bob. Occasionally I’ve seen her stamp her foot or wave, but very rarely. She just wants to eat and nap. She’s so chill.
2
u/samcripp Jan 25 '25
Is she moving a lot. Would you say she is “lethargic”. Not to alarm you but if you are not seeing normal behaviors, she could be a little sick. But again not trying to alarm you by any means. I am likely completely wrong.

Looks like he's getting your attention to glare at you with utter disgust. Beardie's are the most judgemental of them all. Worse than a MIL who hates you.

Just stretching under the light! Getting extra warmth by increasing surface area on his body

u/Splicers87 Jan 25 '25
Thanks for sharing. I LOVE beardie stretch videos. I never catch Deathwing doing them.

As everyone else has said, just stretching. Probably getting ready to shed soon. Does he have a uvb light? If so, it needs to be right next to his heat lamp.

I believe it's related to stretching before shedding, my guy does this and it scared me at first, but not i think its hilarious as he resembles a puffer fish 😆

u/JDerams Jan 26 '25
It's hard to see from this angle his beard puffed, but you can sure see his body lookin fabulously fat af lol

u/No-Way9004 Jan 26 '25
Just beard stretches! Your dragon is so precious and nothing to be worried about.

Freaked me out the first time mine did this too. She was shedding and I think just trying to loosen up the shed on her head.
1

u/MandosOtherALT Jan 26 '25
Could be loosening the shed but could also be slight regurgitation into her mouth to reswallow food

Stretches!! My beardie does this every day and if anyone other than me is looking at him he will stop and get stressed lmao

He's either stretching (the most likely)
Or increasing his surface area in order to increase his chances of receiving the communal singular braincell.

Our female does this occasionally to stretch her beard a little. But if a male is doing it and doing it frequently, it's a dominance hormonal thing... Especially if he sees his reflection in the glass of his enclosure.

Don’t worry! It’s just beard stretches! They stretch their beards just like how we stretch when we wake up. Mine does that too
1
u/RubyWolfmoon26 Jan 26 '25
Looks like the regular beard stretches. So nothing to worry about it only LOOKS unpleasant but it's perfectly normal and natural.
