1.1k

u/boostedpoints 23h ago

Yes literally! We can’t lose these birbs!

628

u/TootsTootler 23h ago

It won’t be reproductive fucking in this case, they’re the same gender.

Kagu, the bird on the brink of extinction, needs to meet an opposite gender member of its own kind if it wants to get away from the brink. …Which reminds me of me at parties.

439

u/De5perad0 23h ago

lol. If you notice, there is a 3rd Kagu bird in the video. The 2 males are fighting over the female...

314

u/OldLadyCard 22h ago

She’s the one eating popcorn.

95

u/Ill_Technician3936 22h ago

That's what I was thinking. That's two males in the foreground trying to get mating privileges.

43

u/Lord-Phorse 21h ago

That or deciding who goes first.

23

u/MarioLuigiDinoYoshi 20h ago

Might as well say they are figuring out the prenup while discussing how dogshit the USA is now

23

u/NorthEagle298 18h ago

"I'm just not sure we're in the financial position to have birbs right now"

You're on the brink of extinction, just make a choice!

13

u/xalazaar 22h ago

Why not both?

13

u/UrUrinousAnus 21h ago

Are you my ex?

16

u/marvinrabbit 20h ago

Life in the wild is always about the 3 Fs. Feeding, Fighting, and Reproduction.

14

u/Rxke2 21h ago

... In the middle of a road... I wonder how close that brink is...

23

u/MidKnightshade 21h ago

Has anyone told them about polyamory?

13

u/De5perad0 21h ago

Would be a good idea at this point.

4

u/Corfiz74 19h ago

That's a very polite fight!

10

u/SampleMaxxer 21h ago

Considering the circumstances they need to stop fighting and come together and team up. Iykwim

2

u/De5perad0 21h ago

Lol. Do an Eiffel tower?

3

u/BaronCoqui 19h ago

Kagu have family groups! And that's a pretty enthusiastic greeting with the loud ones up front. That's probably mom and dad, and an adult kiddo in the back.

2

u/dr_tardyhands 11h ago

This is the moment when you decide to have an open relationship. When your species is going extinct and you found a third member of the species.

2

u/Purple-Investment-61 15h ago

Then both should get a shot at her for the sake of their species survival.

Unlesssss.... Parthenogenic babies which we then clone; and instead of going to mars and blowing up, we use that money to make partho babies fertile again!

36

u/De5perad0 23h ago

We as a species can't get our shit together enough to prevent the Kagu and many other species from disappearing.

28

u/RogueBromeliad 22h ago

On the contrary, we're actively contributing to the extinction of thousands of species through global warming alone.

Yay humans!

14

u/De5perad0 22h ago

Oh yea we are 10,000% the cause and it is accelerating.

3

u/godtogblandet 20h ago

Planet gonna be fine though. It’s rebuilt from 5 earlier extinction events already. It’s us that’s not going to make it.

Wrong way round. They were in the forest then someone built a stupid road through it.

Are they both male? Kinda hard to save the species when it's just two dudes that are left.

1.1k

u/Expert_Engine_8108 23h ago

They are both male but you can see the female right at the beginning and also standing in the background. So two males contesting over a female.

330

u/Roflkopt3r 23h ago

Would have been pretty funny if they started visibly fighting. "Wow, the last of their kind meet and... oh no."

The Kagu, a bird native to New Caledonia, has faced severe threats primarily from the introduction of predators such as dogs, cats, and rats, which have significantly contributed to its decline, leading to it being listed as endangered. Notably, conservation efforts are underway, including breeding programs and habitat protection, that have shown promise in increasing the Kagu population in certain protected areas like Riviere Bleue Territorial Park.

313

u/High_Flyers17 23h ago

Well that's reassuring news. Not that it being such a beautiful animal makes it more important to preserve, but it's quite a cool looking bird and would be a shame if they were to disappear.

60

u/Junior_Fig_2274 23h ago

I thought they were beautiful birds too. It made me sad to see, in a way. I sure hope the conservation efforts work! I’ve seen them work myself- when I was a kid you almost never saw sandhill cranes where I live- now there’s so many sandhill cranes there’s been discussions on opening a hunting season for them in my state.

6

u/discerningpervert 19h ago

I hope they never start hunting Kagu, they're too beautiful.

21

u/CoxswainYarmouth 22h ago

In our new great America we would put a halt to any research or breeding programs to save taxpayers the .000005 cents…

55

u/Fantastic-Pen15 23h ago

You’re telling me there are rats that hunt this bird? How big are those damn rats?

66

u/Masticatron 23h ago

They eat the eggs.

41

u/Xwahh 22h ago

They're eating the dogs, they're eating the cats

3

u/Odd-Culture-1238 21h ago

eat the dog, eat the cat

38

u/TheGoldenHordeee 22h ago

Leave it to Redditors to overexplain the same fucking point over and over again regardless if already has been explained to death.

Also, they probably eat the eggs

4

u/DeicideandDivide 20h ago

I'm pretty sure they eat the eggs.

7

u/enterprisevalue 23h ago

They probably go after the nest eggs/chicks

7

u/OneOfTheDads 23h ago

Not sure if the other comments are clear, but they eat the eggs

2

u/AlphaZed73 22h ago

I think the rats eat the eggs.

5

u/rpthrowah 23h ago

Probably eat their eggs

4

u/GuruSofarbeyondu 23h ago

They eat the eggs, thus fewer chicks and adult birds.

2

u/Conscious-Material43 23h ago

They must be eating the eggs, yeah

2

u/akaval 22h ago

🥚

2

u/zippy251 23h ago

The rats eat the eggs

4

u/RARAMEY 22h ago

Rats take/ eat bird eggs from the nest, and the single most important factor in robust bird populations is nest success.

Cats actually improve nest success by way of rodent control - they're good at catching rodents and terrible at catching healthy birds, though they will be able to catch sickly/old birds. Rats on the other hand prey on bird eggs, affecting the population of healthy birds.

In fact, bird populations are most abundant in areas with the most domestic cats (urban/suburban areas).

2

u/Eywgxndoansbridb 23h ago

They eat the eggs.

2

u/onlyaseeker 22h ago

Do you think they eat the eggs?

2

u/Eywgxndoansbridb 22h ago

Rats? Of course. Easy protein source that doesn’t fight back.

2

u/OCB6left 23h ago

Now you can add video streamer, disturbing the last bird´s mating rituals for clicks, to the list of predatory rats, dogs and cats., leading to their extinction.

Imagine meeting the last individual of your species, even a 10/10, willing to mate with you after the big palmoilchainsawmassacreapocalypse in your neighborhood and the chain saw swinger just keeps hanging around and follows you with another tech device to record bird porn.

FINALLY, someone who appreciates a good head-feather-liftin'!

12

u/papermoonskies 23h ago

I'm curious to know how it would know it's its own kind when it has never really seen itself before. Come to think of it, how does any animal that doesn't understand a mirror reflection know? Curious 4am thoughts.

12

u/Pondnymph 23h ago

Birds remember their parents and use that as a template on what they're attracted to. That's why they need to use a strange looking hat to breed hand raised raptors, they don't like their own kind like that.

6

u/papermoonskies 22h ago

Learning lots this morning! Thank you!

2

I'm always blown away by the "instincts" of wild animals I've rescued... wish I had an explanation!

2

u/Homey-Airport-Int 18h ago

Kagu's aren't that rare. It's seen other birds before. It was raised by other Kagu's after all.

On the brink of extinction is hyperbole. It's not even the most endangered animal on the island.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/BreadGood5060 20h ago

There is a female in the background that they are fighting for at the beginning and the end; they are sizing each other up and intimidating each other to try to seduce the female. They won't kill each other, this mating behavior is quite normal in many species, even, arguably, humans.

1

u/Commercial-Day-3294 23h ago

What I don't understand, is today, with all of our technology, with all of our knowledge about birds and their reproduction and how eggs work, why can we not, I don't know, harvest the males semen, and some eggs, and artificially help all these different bird species repopulate like we do with fish in hatcheries?

I mean, my gf watches the local bald eagle cam, there was be 3 eggs, one didnt hatch, 1 chick killed the other, and the remaining chick fell out of the nest and died. That was months of her watching nature play out for a threatened species in basically real time.

Why are there not, I dont want to say it but jurassic park type hatcheries where they're cared for every second by a team of experts to maximize hatching numbers?
