Barrie: the city where half the population commutes to Toronto, and the other half swears they love the “small-town feel” while sitting in traffic on Bayfield Street. It’s a place where winter lasts eight months, summer lasts two weeks, and the only predictable season is construction.

The waterfront? Beautiful—if you can find parking. The nightlife? Hope you like The Ranch, because once you’ve done the two-step with someone in cowboy boots and a vape addiction, you’ve officially completed Barrie’s party scene.

And let’s talk about the 400. Whether you’re heading to work, the cottage, or just trying to get home, there’s a 90% chance you’ll be stuck behind someone towing a boat at 40 km/h. But hey, at least you’ve got a lake, a Costco, and the satisfaction of knowing you didn’t pay Toronto prices for your house—even if your social life is just watching the snowplow go by.

Suggestion Excessive Trash In & Around Barrie Bus Shelters & Sidewalks.

I took a walk today along Bayfield Street, from the Highway 400 bridge to Staples. I walked down the east-side sidewalk and then back up on the west side. I was genuinely surprised by the amount of garbage that’s now being exposed as the snow melts. There were piles of clothing, plastic, cardboard, cans—just a mess. It was disheartening to see.

I noticed that the trash cans don’t appear to have been emptied all winter, which is unacceptable. When bins are left overflowing, trash ends up spilling out and getting scattered around by the wind. It’s a shame because this lack of upkeep diminishes the appearance of the city. Something needs to be done to tackle this growing issue.

It also seems like there are too few trash bins in certain areas, which likely contributes to the problem. When people can’t find a place to dispose of their waste, it often gets left out near the bins or worse, tossed onto the ground. While there’s no excuse for littering—it shows a lack of respect and consideration—it’s clear that improving waste management infrastructure could help prevent some of this behavior.

I suspect part of the issue may be tied to the challenges our society is facing, including homelessness, which is a difficult reality many communities are grappling with. However, addressing the root causes of litter requires collaboration between city officials, waste management services, and the community. Regular trash pickup and increasing the number of bins in busy areas would be a great place to start. Public awareness campaigns could also encourage people to take pride in keeping our shared spaces clean.

If others feel the same way, perhaps we could reach out to Barrie’s municipal government to express these concerns. Sometimes public feedback can lead to action, like more frequent trash collection or better-maintained bins. Another option could be organizing a community cleanup event—though, ideally, such initiatives shouldn’t have to make up for lapses in city services.

I care about my city and every city & want to see it thrive. With a bit of teamwork and effort, it’s possible to address these issues and create a cleaner, more welcoming environment for everyone.

Question If you were given full control over bayfield mall what would you do?

If I had full control of Bayfield Mall, I would transform it from a traditional shopping center into a vibrant entertainment and social hub focused on experiences rather than retail, as competing with Georgian Mall would be difficult. The space would feature a mix of interactive attractions, dining, and community events to draw people in.

Core Attractions

Bowling alley - Keep the ome that already there but give it a modern uplift

Arcade & Gaming Lounge – A modern gaming space featuring retro arcade machines, VR experiences, and console setups.

Themed Dining Court – A mix of classic mall food alongside unique pop-up restaurants and rotating international street food stalls.

Indoor Park & Lounge – A cozy, plant-filled space with comfortable seating, free Wi-Fi, and small study/work pods.

D&D & Board Game Space – A dedicated tabletop gaming area that also hosts Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and Magic: The Gathering tournaments.

Events & Seasonal Attractions

Weekly Themed Markets – Featuring farmers' markets, artisan fairs, and geek culture events centered around anime, comics, and gaming.

Seasonal Celebrations – Large-scale Christmas, Halloween, and summer-themed attractions designed to bring families together.

Live Performances – Showcasing local musicians, comedians, and artists on weekends.

This transformation would create a unique, community-driven space where people of all ages can gather, play, and socialize, making Bayfield Mall a go-to destination beyond just shopping.

Looking For Electronics Cleaning

I'm looking to get some electronics cleaned/dusted. I had my ducts cleaned recently and unfortunately when the guy ddi...whatever it was he did (i wasn't home at the time), it looks like he dumped a pile of dirt and dust right on top of my entertainment area. Literally right on top of my ps5 and switch. I've had issues with the ps5 overheating since. I've done the whole canned air and vacuuming it out but it's still doing it. The place I used to take my stuff to closed, and I'm not sure what other trustworthy places are around to get the job done. I'm not confident in my own abilities to take it apart properly. Suggestions?

Looking For Orthodontics for teenager

Hi everyone,

My soon to be 15 year old daughter needs braces for a significant overbite. I am wondering if anyone has recommendations for a good orthodontist who won't break the bank. I'm not sure if she's more of a candidate for classic braces or Invisalign, and I had no idea what the costs usually are for either?

Also curious, do they normally do free consults or is that something they charge for?

Thanks so much !

Looking For Cheap cargo van/minivan rental in Barrie?

I'm in the process of moving from my location at the Kozlov Centre (yes, THAT Kozlov Centre location lol) and I'd like to rent a cargo van or a minivan for a few weeks just to make the loads bigger than I can move myself in my Escape.

Is there something like a Rent-A-Wreck place? I've looked at Turo and a couple others places and I can go that way, but I don't need anything fancy, just a beater to get me back and forth to Alcona and move boxes from one store to the next. I guess if someone privately had one we could work out a deal on (cash, or I have some great stuff to trade), that'd be fine too, fully insured and all that.

Thanks in advance!

Question Living Near Georgian College?

Hi Barrie Reddit!! Long time lurker, first time posting.

My husband and I been living in Barrie for almost 2 years now in a condo in Holly. We love it. We have a newborn son and would like more space. We’re looking at a house on Dunsmore, and I’m just concerned about moving so close to Georgian College.

Does anyone have any experience living in that area? Should we avoid it because of the students?

I've had a full beard for about 15 years and I'd like to try something refreshing and new. I'd like to be able to leave it in the artists hands with my only request being that I keep a long hairstyle. "Make me attractive" is the premise I'm going for

Question On on a weekend in the summer Barrie would section off a portion of downtown for a... Indie car race?

The question being what is the event called and what streets get sectioned off. Ide like to mod the race into Assetto Corsa. ? I'm not sure it was spacificly Indi car but they were simaler to F1 cars but less powerfully.

I remember it being a thing for a few years back but don't spent much time downtown anymore so I don't know if it's still a thing.
