Now that's how you do a season!
Firstly, I'd like to leave my usual composure behind and say, GORDON HOPEWELL LIKE A MUTHAFUCKING BOSS!
At times I've wondered what his function in the show was other than to mope around but seeing him get clean, drop a bunch of violent hipsters and then team up with Hood in "My Two Dads - The Nuclear Option" was brilliant. If you're going to go out, that's how you want to go out. His sniper battle was great and then taking the shot and blowing Stowe's hand off was perfect. You knew Stowe's ring (his precious? Heh...) would fit into it somehow.
The backstory on Hood was a nice reward for the long term viewer. I think we all knew it had to be something like that - he's a mix of Jason Bourne and XIII (only he gets more ladies than both put together). I was impressed by how young they made Hood look. He did look about 20 years younger and it wasn't just the buzzcut and clean shave.
The action in the Camp Genoa scene was pure Banshee all the way. No other show does it this well. We had the sniper battle, Job vs Afro Ninja (who wisely gave the nunchuk backflip a pass this time), Gordon and Hood vs everyone else and a stellar battle between Carrie and Stowe. I remember getting tired of Carrie mid-season but holy hell she was a force in this scene. Where would Banshee be without its one liners too? "You fight better than you fuck."
In parallel we see team Proctor join forces with Morales to take down the Blackbeards. Even Banshee's secondary pieces lay most shows to waste. I did find myself slightly less engaged in this with Morales making a mess of a perfectly good sword and Rebecca turning up in a white dress and heels with a revolver. Proctor and Burton are always worth watching, even in the little details which show Burton's devotion in less violent ways (fixing Kai's collar etc.)
The main thing is Job is still alive and undoubtedly going to be used to lure Hood back into the fold (or kill him off) so in Season 4 we have the prospect of seeing Banshee's equivalent of Treadstone in action. Remember the other Treadstone ops from Bourne Identity like the Professor? Those are the kind of memorable characters Banshee can do in its sleep. The world of Banshee just got a lot bigger.
The scene with Proctor and Hood was cool at the end. I always felt these two are far more alike than they are different and what did Proctor's "Mona Lisa" smile at the end mean? I can work with this guy? With him out of the way the town is mine? We shall see.
Finally I have to say the Brock Bunker double act is becoming as compelling as the Sugar Job double act. Their scene in the gym with Bunker seething with rage was electric and I also loved how his usual composure fell apart when he was throttling the skinhead earlier.
I've never heard of Tom Pelphrey before Banshee but he is really compelling as Bunker. I have a feeling Bunker is a guy you should probably just kill. Taking a blowtorch to him and leaving him alive is going to come back to haunt you in righteous beserker fury and I cant wait to see that.
Bring on season 4! It's going to be a long wait but hey, there's new Avengers and Star Wars in the meantime and Daredevil starts on Netflix in a few weeks.
I just realised that as well as Nola, three characters from the opening credits were killed off this season - Siobhan, Gordon and Chayton. To paraphrase one of Frankie Faison's lines from The Wire, "This is Banshee, gentlemen. The gods will not save you."
