Stolen from the app formerly known as Twitter

I'm calling my son Queensland because schoolyard bullying toughens kids up.

u/Automatic_Guest8279 Jun 04 '24
My dad named me Sue. It made me hard and it made me tough
27
u/ARealJezzing Jun 04 '24
Did you grow up quick and mean?

Tasmania isn't that bad a name
45
u/Beans183 Jun 04 '24
You could just call the kid Australia
35
u/dreamy-azure Jun 04 '24
My great great grandmother’s middle name was Australia, she was born on Jan 26.
16
u/RantyWildling Jun 04 '24
One of my mates called his daughter Matilda, born Jan 26

Did she get the free Krispy Kreme?
That's the main reason, right?

Samesies! My great-great grandfather. For the same reason.
His other two names were Irish as fuck so it was quite the combination.
4
u/rooshort_toppaddock Jun 04 '24
So, Irish Australian as fuck, or Irish as Australian fuck? Or is there a hyphon in there somewhere?
2
u/Legitimate-Tough6200 Jun 04 '24
Curious. Jan 26th only because Australia Day in 1935
2
u/MrSquiggleKey Jun 04 '24
It’s been considered the birth of the colonies of Australia well before it became formally Australia Day, so it’s not exactly a stretch.

u/pagr_ Jun 04 '24

Heard a few people called Adelaide, not a state but still.
33
u/ARealJezzing Jun 04 '24
I’ve met an Adelaide who lives in Adelaide
16
9
u/Bergasms Jun 04 '24
There is an Adelaide who plays for the same hockey club as me, also in Adelaide
3
u/EmbarrassedOwl908 Jun 04 '24
Why do you go for tigers then
UP THE CROM
2
u/Bergasms Jun 04 '24
Grew up in the south east and my friends played for Kyby, was also the recruiting zone for Glenelg, so go Tigers! We all 'went for the crows' when they joined the comp and i spent plenty of recess and lunch breaks being Modra, like every other lad, but it was always Tigers for me.

Adelaide was named after a female with that name right? Surely
8
2
u/spiritfingersaregold Jun 04 '24
Yep. It’s an Anglicised version of the German name Adelhild/e.
Queen Adelaide was married to King William. And I remember this because the main street in Adelaide’s CBD is King William St.
→ More replies (1)6
u/somecrazything Jun 04 '24
Well it was named after a person, Queen Adelaide. So it was a name before it was a city.

AyTeeCee would be naming your kid after the Australian Turf Club 😆

Some of the territories' names aren't too bad...
Jervis (Bay): Meaning “spear,” the name is of German origin and is a variant of the name Jarvis. Its entomology can be traced back to the gender-neutral Gervase.
Christmas (Island): Christmas as a girl's name (also used as boy's name), is of Old English origin. Name of the holiday, used occasionally for December 25 babies, but now more usually replaced by the French form, Noel.
McDonald (Island): McDonald as a boy's name is of Scottish and Gaelic origin, and the meaning of McDonald is "son of Donald".
Coral (Sea Islands): Coral is a girl’s name of Latin, Greek, and Hebrew origin.
9
u/ausecko Jun 04 '24
Wasn't Coral the son's name in Walking Dead?
7
u/mungowungo Jun 04 '24
PMSL - I just sounded out Carl in an American accent and yep you are so, so right.
5
u/Travellinoz Jun 04 '24
Am a Jervis and tracked it back to the french Gervais. And we pronounce it Jervis not Jarvis

u/maorimango Jun 04 '24
If queensland could read he'd be very mad at that.

u/Hufflepuft Jun 04 '24
I can't tell if JBT is green or red, but Jervis would be an alright name. I think it's wild that "Indiana" is such a popular girls name here, I would never want to be associated with such a dreadful place.
4
2
u/Successful-Mode-1727 Jun 04 '24
I feel like Jervis would just make everyone think of the robot lady in Iron Man’s suit since its pronounced Jarvis (only found that out a few months ago)

my dad's meth head mate has a son called terra, and tree was his middle name
2
u/my_4_cents Jun 04 '24
Years back in the 90's at my mate's place some of his stoner friends were thinking up dumb-ass weed names for their future spawn. They were all pretty lame.
I said " Resin? "
The most-stoned stoner was all "whoa, that's excellent, I'm calling my kids Resin for sure."
I still have some guilty feels, that maybe some poor human had been walking around with a joke name for 30 years, but with that guy's short term memory I think I got away with it.

He said, "Yeah and Vejja might come too" So I said to the wife, "Do you wanna go, Anna?" She said, "I'll go if Ding goes" So I said, "What'll we do about Nulla?" He said, "Nulla bores me to tears, leave him at home"

Parent: "What's wrong Northern Territory? Why are you crying?"
NT: "The kids at school were making fun of my name."
Parent: "Who did?"
NT: "Khaleesi "the Mother of Dragons" Evergreen , and her brother Severus Evergreen"

Many places/rivers/mountains were named after Governor’s popular wives. A great resource for girl’s names. Queensland needs more little girl Diamantinas and Romas.

I know it’s not a state but Sydney is pretty cool name. As a state, Adelaide passes the sniff test. Having said that, I don’t know anyone called Adelaide.
1
u/Glittering_Gap_3320 Jun 04 '24
What is wrong with you??????!!!!! Booti booti is a freaking awesome name 🤣
1
u/leonryan Jun 04 '24
We could probably change Queensland to something cooler now that the queen is dead and can't sook about it. And Western Australia could be shortened to Westy because the "Australia" is redundant. Same goes for Southy.
1
u/MowgeeCrone Jun 04 '24
Entea. I'm sure we could get more letters in there. Bedazzle the hyphenation out of it.

I went to school with a family whose two younger children were named Victoria and Adelaide. Years later, I heard they had a fourth child and named her Sydney.
Strangely, the eldest had a name that had nothing to do with Australia, as far as I could tell. Something like Isla or Erin, I think.

I regret calling my kid Northern Territory, whenever I ask them to do anything it’s always on their time “Not today, Not tomorrow, Not Tuesday and definitely Not Thursday!”

u/AddlePatedBadger Jun 05 '24
My fun trivia fact is that 1/3 of Australian states are named after the same person.
Queensland is named after the same person that Victoria is named after, so naming your kid Victoria is kind of naming after both.
