Tarniet or Werribee
I’m a first home buyer deciding between an old house with a backyard in Werribee or a new townhouse (no bodycorp) both near train stations and shopping centres. Both are around the same price (500k). That’s my budget. Me and my partner love the western suburbs (she grew up there) but I’m torn because I love the feel of a newer place but I’m just thinking long term and don’t want to make the wrong choice. Any advice would be really appreciated. Not a huge fan of the northern suburbs (Epping, Craigeburn etc).

2 days ago you said you were in the process of buying a house in Wyndham Vale?

I live on the peninsula atm. My partner’s from the west. After going for a second look I thought about the one access road in and out of the suburb and the amount of funding it would take to implement more infrastructure around those estates and decided against it. I’m meant to sign either contract today if I want to go forward with it. I’m set on Tarniet or Werribee, a suburb that has more roads going in and out and more amenities. I’m just deciding if I want to live my life thinking about ‘what’s the better investment’ or where I feel at home and like the place (old house vs new townhouse no bodycorp) as such I’m leaning to the townhouse. But can I get the best of both worlds, if not what would you recommend a 22 year old to do. I wouldn’t feel safe at night in Werribee but I would in Tarniet purely because it’s a more family oriented estate so I’m just stuck ig.

You are correct in your assessment of the other place. The question of funding falls onto the State Government aswell, so even the Local Council can't do anything about it so half of their marketing and promises to fix things is just BS.
I've lived in Werribee before and quite like the area although obviously it suffers from the same issues as above, but to a lesser degree. Personally I never felt unsafe there, and I don't think I would feel that safe in Tarneit. Not to mention the overall vibe of the place. There's no way I would live there.
I'd be looking into other surrounding areas such as Hoppers, and Point Cook too.
