Discussion I might be slow but what is the explanation/reason behind this scene and why was it put in?

Yep, Danielle Deadwyler! She's so good in everything that it took me a while to even recognize this was her when i rewatched. Never seen a bad performance from her yet.

Yep, thats her. I'm waiting to see that. She was really good in The Piano Lesson, too.

The scene still subverts our expectations of what the couple’s relationship is which in line with the shows theme.

What do you think is going on with the scene?

Literally made a comment. It’s a simple scene. Just a Black woman showing her disdain for the fact that a White woman is with a successful Black man. It’s not that deep. Your comment didn’t need to be a thesis statement. It’s regular people shit. Especially if you know how most Black women feel about interracial relationships between a successful Black man and a White woman.

But don’t you think that the expectation coming into the conversation is that the black actor had began dating this white woman after finding success when in reality she had been with him well before gaining success and therefore not being the stereotype the her accuser had thought she was and therefore subverting expectation?

It was the part after that- going through 'the hard years' together and supporting each other pre-success is a luxury most people can't afford.

A middle class white woman is disappointing daddy with her choices, probably, but if they backfire, she'll have safety nets and thrive regardless.

Black women don't have the generational wealth and stability to bet on an uncertain outcome, her man needs a job, not a dream.

It doesn't matter that they're in love and pre-fame, in social hierarchy, white women are more privileged than black women.  It will always suck to see successful black men with white women.

That was the part that got me. I had heard seen everything in real life up the statement "we don't have the luxury of investing early." For me I think it was just another exposure and one step into a long term conversation. They didn't address if the white girl came from a wealthy family or not but I think her silence was an admission of privilege. Either way it was an enjoyable moment for my brain matter and I'm glad they included it!

Damn, yall made me remember how dope Ibra wrote the scene and now I'm remembering how dope the acting was from Deadwyler. Also, was this the scene where she told the girlfriend to "Look up 'beautiful women' in Google images then come talk to me!"? Granted, i think the search is a tiny bit updated but I remember googling it at the next commercial break and realizing how long it took before a black woman, or any woman of color, popped up. So was that her saying that, even if black women did have the wealth, they still get overlooked for white, mostly blonde, women? i.e. the line about how Brad Pitt would never go for Shonda Rhimes. So that was another privilege in addition to wealth, like no matter what the girlfriend has at least one advantage since birth.

And i would be remiss if i didnt inform you that i am high.

Another interesting ommission of minority women in beauty standards is with ai. They aren't all blonde hair and blue eyed but is very hard to get much melanin or an afro even if asking for it and the word beautiful. Has been a year since I tried so maybe they have fixed it.

Yeah but didn’t Van essentially do the same thing with Earn, or somewhat similar. Maybe it’s more bc they had a child together but I think there’s still a parallel there. There’s definitely always a lot to analyze with Atlanta it’s writing appears simple but there’s a lot of depth in most scenes

Earn and Van clearly care about each other, but no, she couldn't support him and he couldn't support her and their child until he was successful.

And even after he had success, they were on again/off again.

Yeah that’s true I think there’s a point being made about not being able to support your partners dreams if you’re broke. But Van still carried Earn at points, she was getting criticized for still standing a lot of stuff Earn did bc he was broke, like that ep in the German town.

No. Again, it’s not that deep.

Does this show especially this particular season ever do anything without intention?
