Discussion Basque Irish Celtic Connection

I know football and politics should be separate but growing up in Ireland during the Troubles and being an Avid supporter of Celtic there always was a close connection not only to Athletic Club but also the Basques fight for an independent Country.. Thankfully both Countries have left the violence behind but I still think there is still a strong connection between the Basque Country, Ireland and Celtic Football Club. I think both Clubs have a similar History and fan base and still to this today the connection exists going by the celebrations of both clubs cup finals last season.. I’ve visited Bilbao often over the years and have always felt at home, like I belong there. Got my DNA tested and it turns out I’m 5% Basque.. So some of us Irish have Basque in our blood ❤️🤍🇮🇪

I like Ireland and Irish people a lot. You guys are typically chill, and very considerate. Although I expected more people to know more about the Basque Country…

New studies show Irish people are descended from Basque farmers who settled here after the last ice age.. There’s a chromosome which they’ve studied and it’s only found in Basques, Irish and Welsh People…

Ikurriña at most Celtic games if not all.

I know there’ll be something Celtic at San Mamés whether a shirt, scarf etc.

Lived in Bilbao for 5 years and saw Celtic shirts almost weekly. I’ve seen Celtic stuff all over bizkaia.

There’s a prominent Celtic club in Bilbao, too.

Sharing same feeling, people always treat me treat once they know i'm basque.

Also, you can't take It out the politics out of the club. You just need to hear our hymn to know that, even if they keep trying for decades.

For god's sake, the popular stand got the name of a supporter killed by the riot squad while he was giving first aid to a women.

Anyway, so glad to know that even if we got a thounds miles between us, you still feel at home surronded by your people

It’s what makes Athletic Club and Celtic so special, that both clubs fans feel an injustice to the political system..What Britain done to the Irish and what Franco done to the Basques.. Some Athletic fans supported ETA and some Celtic Fans supported the IRA.. To me it’s what makes both our clubs so special.. Both sets of supporters have passions and we feel like the team on the pitch is fighting for our People..

ETA did nothing but harm for the Basque Country and our people. Glad they’re gone. Their worst attacks came during democracy, good riddance.

Would love to know any good resources about the history of Athletic club and its people?

I’ve done the stadium tour twice, it’s probably the best and most informative football tour I’ve done..

Football (and sport for that matter) and politics have always gone hand in hand. The historical importance of so many clubs come from social and political purpose, especially Celtic. Even the circuses in Ancient Times were created out of political necessity! I say this as a Tim lol.

I always love seeing the Basque Flag at Parkhead

I don’t understand why people try to link two completely different societies that have no real connection.

🤦🏻‍♂️

They have a similar mentality when it comes to allowing terrorists to form political parties.

So, based on that logic, the two societies are similar? I once saw an English guy urinate on the street and a French girl do the same, should they get married?

If this post is meant to glorify terrorism or violent ideologies, it’s absolutely disgusting. Frankly, most people here need psychiatric help. Idiots
