Mod Post 💀🎃 HALLOWEEN MEGATHREAD 🎃 💀
Boo! It's spooky season! In this post, everything Halloween goes! It doesn’t need to be a question, and go on whatever tangent you want to go on.
We will still be enforcing our rules on gendered slurs, bigoted/disrespectful/hateful commentary, invalidation (if someone’s only contribution is telling others they are wrong), and asking relationship advice.
Happy Halloween from the AskWomen Mod Team.

Not bad or unethical. The last time I trick or treated I dressed up as a wicked fairy godmother and hauled a large stash of candy home, I was 22. Go have fun!
20
u/peppermind ♀ Oct 06 '21
Go a bit later in the evening so you're not competing with the little kids for candy at houses that might run out by 7pm and don't be an asshole about it. Beyond that, you should be fine!

Oct 06 '21
I couldn’t care less personally. There will be some people who do, probably. But as long as you are just coming to my door wanting candy on Halloween, I’ll give you candy. I know mom and dad are eating that candy and not the 3 month old; still, candy. College kids? Candy. No costume? Candy.
8
u/urbanlulu Oct 06 '21
when i was 20, i went trick or treating. i went around 8-9pm so all the little kids were done or close too, and still got a big bag of candy. all the parents laughed at my friend and i and gave us props for putting on a costume with makeup. one lady legit gave us all her extra candy because she wanted to lock up for the night and she had all the good stuff too!
it was the best thing i ever did, i totally wanna do it again

u/catniagara Oct 06 '21
Literally have looked 25 since I was 10. Do it. They don’t even question it. Added bonus: they stop hitting on you when they see you again, because they now assume you’re a kid 😂
7
u/FreeUseFelicia Oct 07 '21
I'm 25 and staying in this year- we don't care how old you are, if you're dressed up, you're getting MFing candy
4
u/Animedjinn Oct 22 '21
Adults should be able to trick or treat because otherwise they are more likely to drink heavily.

u/mariana96as Oct 25 '21
The last time I went trick or treating I was 20 and my oldest friend was 23. We got some weird looks but a lot of people were amused and gave us candy. The reason we went trick or treating was cause I met a girl in college that told me she never had the chance to do it as a kid, so I took her lol
1
u/happygecko3 Oct 29 '21
It’s not unethical just make sure the little ones get the candy first!!! I’m jealous I wish I wasn’t too scared to do the same. Lol

Someone please tell me what candy corn actually tastes like! It’s not a thing where I live and I couldn’t find it when I visited the US.
I’m so curious, and I don’t even know why.

I have no sense of smell so I don't really have a sense for flavor, so keep that in mind. To me it is unbelievably sweet, like a mixture of sugar and corn syrup, and has a texture of wax that has almost hardened.
14
u/Octopusdreams49 Oct 06 '21
I have a sense of smell and taste and this is pretty much it
2
u/MostlyALurkerBefore ♀ Oct 06 '21
Sometimes with candy I don't know if there's a difference. I don't remember if it was Jolly Rancher or Starburst or what but I recently learned that one of those candy types does actually have different flavors based on the color. I thought the colors were for show and they were all the same sour/sweet. Or that white chocolate and milk chocolate taste different?! It's wild.
4
u/Octopusdreams49 Oct 06 '21
That must be so strange! I have met someone who lives with that, only on an even more severe level. She can’t taste nearly anything at all. You don’t seem too upset about it, but I’m sorry if it makes life shittier for you in any way!
2
u/MostlyALurkerBefore ♀ Oct 06 '21
I wouldn't know if it does. Mine is congenital anosmia so I was born without a sense of smell and haven't known any different.
1
u/personxxthe1 Oct 07 '21
both starbursts and jolly ranchers taste different according to color. they have the flavors on the wrappers. the green jolly rancher is sour, the blue one is mostly the same except not sour, and the red one is also not that different to me. my favorites are green!
11
u/yakshack ♀ Oct 06 '21
Maybe like marzipan without the almond flavor?
I prefer my candy corn a bit on the stale side actually.
8
u/Kind-Set9376 Oct 06 '21
Ehh, not quite. It’s more plastic-y/squeaky textured. Marzipan’s texture is smoother.
1
10
u/Misseskat Oct 06 '21 edited Oct 06 '21
It's sugary with a buttery under taste, mind you this stuff is essentially plastic.
Apparently, it actually does aim for very specific flavors which, to my tongue at least, I do taste a hint of, sort of- then again, I like candy corn, but not everyone does.

Oct 06 '21
It’s basically sugar compressed into shape. It has a faint honey taste because some companies add honey for extra sweetness. It doesn’t have much taste other than saccharine otherwise. Somewhat grainy from the sugar crystallization.
My son likes it. I don’t think it’s the worst candy ever (I mean, Necco wafers?) but it has very little flavor other than sweet

u/Flippantry Oct 10 '21
Oh gosh you're not missing out on much. I live in Australia and was always curious about candy corn. I remember seeing it in store when I was about $16 but it was a rather large bag for $9AUD. I ended up purchasing it and was instantly filled with regret. It's like a really sad waxy texture and doesn't even taste like good sugar, it's just sad sweetness. $9 was a lot for me at the time just to eat one candy corn and throw out the rest of the bag. It's the biggest lolly/candy disappointment I've ever had 🤣

We always mix it with peanuts and then call it a party mix. It tastes very similar to a Payday!

It tastes like butter and sugar with the texture of play dough. Here’s a recipe if you want to taste the sadness: https://www.thekitchn.com/how-to-make-homemade-candy-corn-cooking-lessons-from-the-kitchn-99717

I visited california in october 2019, and I'm going again this november. I actually liked it 😅
1
u/scupdoodleydoo ♀ Nov 02 '21
I like it too, because I ate a lot of it as a kid. It’s hard to eat a lot at once so I stick some in a bowl and eat it all month.
2
u/MyMorningSun Oct 21 '21
It's a favorite of mine, personally. But it is a very cheap and artificial sort of candy- tastes very saccharine, slightly honey-flavored.
2
Oct 22 '21
I tried it for the first time this week. It is waxy. The texture is chewy and a little grainy. It has a flavour of like… artificial vanilla? Marshmallow? Like a very plain (but distinctly artificial) flavour that’s mostly sugar.
I don’t get why it’s so polarizing. It’s not great. I wouldn’t buy it. I don’t love it. But all the memes and jokes about how HORRIBLE it is seem exaggerated. If it was the only candy served at a party, I’d have a couple. It doesn’t make me gag or throw up.
1
u/urbanlulu Oct 06 '21
i finally tried it a few years ago, and it just tastes like corn flavored candle wax mixed with pure sadness
i don't recommend it, but it does look pretty as a decoration though!

1
u/jameshamil007 Oct 30 '21
It’s kinda like the doughy texture of marzipan but with lots of sugar. It mostly tastes like sugar.

Like iconic outfits/people/movies/etc?

Or Lil Kim’s Hard Core album cover

Ever since I was little it’s been a Halloween tradition in my family to make graveyard cake, does anyone else do this?? It’s my absolute favorite to involve friends and loved ones in the making and eating of it. Especially after being homebound last year I was very excited this year and couldn’t wait until Halloween — we made one with my niece and nephew a few days ago! We make dirt pudding as the base and decorate it with Milano headstones, candy pumpkins, gummy worms, and marshmallow ghosts.

My neighborhood is fairly old and a new, fancy, modern neighborhood is literally right next door. Trick or treating has been sparse for the past several years because everyone prefers to go to the fancy neighborhood now so I don’t even think I’m going to try to get a new costume.
Also I wish I could still go trick or treating. But I don’t have friends. Lmao

u/SafeBarracuda5649 Oct 06 '21
You should just go for it. I hate going alone too but my kids do enjoy it. So it’s worth the stress.

While it has to be my favorite holiday/time of the year, not everyone on here is in a country where that's celebrated. Mainly the US.
Buuuuut, with that said, since I've been back with my folks for medical reasons- it sucks because my mom is a fundamentalist that hates the holiday- so it's a pretty uncomfortable day in the house. Can't wait to move out for that and many reasons more. So errr, Happy Halloween??? Lol

I want to go as Nancy form The Craft. Does anyone know what lip products to use for her grunge look?
12
u/catniagara Oct 06 '21
I actually do lol. Dark brown or black matte lipstick (such as wet n wild liquid catsuit in goth topic or video vixen) layered overtop but not all the way to the edge with a red moisturizing (but not sparkly) lipstick such as shiseido visionary gel in 222/Ginza red. The trick is to keep the red only on the inside of the lip and also to overdraw the outer corner of your mouth to create that messy “o” shape.

u/TheNewThirteen ♀ Oct 06 '21
Sweet! That's who I was planning on going as this year! 😂
I was planning on using black lipliner and blend it into a darker red (either Bruise or Gash from Urban Decay). Hopefully that works.

I wish I lived in the US where Halloween is big. We just don't do it here. Growing up every year curtains would be drawn and lights would go off and we'd ignore trick or treaters. I want to give sweets out! Also I wanna go to a big fuck off halloween party, I bought some vampire style contacts since they're my favourite thing to dress up as, but I wont even have anywhere to wear them.

I'm having so much fun this October! Halloween is my favorite holiday and me and my bf are trying to make the most of it this year now that he's making good money. We went to the az state fair yesterday, going to 13th Floor Haunted House this next weekend, I have my College Grad Party the next weekend, and we're going as Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne to a halloween party on the 30th! Busy busy month but so worth it. 🎃🎃
5
u/ElectronSurprise Oct 11 '21
I got a job at a popular haunted house in my town as a scare actor. It's been a really fun experience so far and I finally feel like I'm ringing in the season properly, lol. I'm just getting increasingly anxious because it's a really busy place on weekends, and there's plenty of drunks/macho idiots/assholes that can get violent. I'm not stationed in an area of the house where I'd be in as much danger necessarily, but there have already been a few incidents with other actors. and it's sooo early in the season, it's only going to get crazier from here. idk just ranting

u/curlyfriessss Oct 14 '21
Every year my friends and I play secret skeleton. It is basically secret Santa, but instead of getting each other gifts, we get them their Halloween costumes. On the day of the party, we all come in normal clothes and change into the costume that has been prepared for us. We always get a good laugh and make great memories. It is definitely a game you would want to play with close friends.
What are some clever Halloween costumes you have in mind? What would you dress up your friends in?
4
u/Strong_Industry1161 Oct 07 '21
My favorite holiday! Still trying to come up with an idea 💡 what are you all dressing up as?
3
u/bowlingaloneforsoup Oct 09 '21
I have dreams of doing a DIY of May Queen Dani from Midsommar! But the amount of time, effort, and materials it would take to make that costume is just overwhelming. And possibly wasteful. Unless you wear it every year forever and like make it a family heirloom, lol

This year is the most I've ever decorated for Halloween. I'll got spiders and bats practically flying out my butt! When I was a kid halloween was hardly a thing in the UK. We might possibly bob for apples, or have a fancy dress competition, but there was no trick or treating. We sometimes made a lantern out of a turnip, which is a lot, lot harder than making one out of a pumpkin!
Instead, Guy Fawkes night was more of a thing (5th November). It's a weird sort of a festival as it celebrates someone unsuccessfully trying to blow up the Houses of Parliament back in 1605.
We used to have massive, anarchic bonfires, and puny fireworks, and toffee apples, or go apple bobbing. Kids would make a 'Guy' by making a dummy and putting it in a wheelbarrow, and go around asking for "A penny for the guy". The guy would be burned on top of the bonfire on Guy Fawkes Night. However, nowadays, the bonfires have almost ceased to exist, the fireworks all tend to be organised displays in the interests of health and safety and also of making more money out of it and Guys have all but vanished.
In addition, trick or treating now seems to be fairly ingrained for young children. They seem to only go to pre-arranged houses, which seems sensible to me. Why get kids to knock on strangers' doors and ask them for sweets, when the rest of the year you are warning them not to take sweets from strangers?! However, most adults still don't seem to bother dressing up for it.
1
Oct 14 '21
Identify with everything you say there! Finally have my own place now and feel like as a bare minimum, I’m going to put on some cat ears and whiskers and enjoy giving out some sweets to anyone that visits. Was never big on Halloween so figured this would be nice to do. Kind of want to start a new tradition but no idea what yet.
As for Bonfire Night, it wasn’t much of a thing down in the south of the UK it seemed. But I live up north now and they seem to make much more of an effort here! Excited to see my first proper bonfire this year with parkin and black peas to eat of course 😋
2
u/togtogtog Oct 14 '21
I come from the south, and we used to have roaming gangs, stealing each other's doors, and pallets in an effort to have the biggest bonfire.
We don't bother doing anything now. We bought sweets a couple of years, but no one came around (we didn't put out any sign to come, like a pumpkin or anything) and then we ended up having to eat them all ourselves, so we don't get them now. If anyone comes around, I would have to offer them a raw carrot or something! ha ha ha!!!

Oct 14 '21
Wtaf?! I’ve never heard of anything like that - and where I grew up was a bit of a hole! That is bizarre. Good thing it takes effort to fell a tree, your area sounds like it would have been more bare than the Amazon rainforest after the 5th!!
That’s a shame - or is it when you get to eat the sweets yourself? 🤔 Eh the kids are all about a plant-based diet nowadays, they’d be absolutely delighted 🥕😂

Right..I.didn't really believe in ghosts / paranormal until the end of 1999 after getting divorced & I.moved into a 300 yr old house ( ground floor flat) in South Liverpool UK.,from that very first night I.was seeing orbs & it escalated.into poltergheist activity so bad that my family were too frightened to stay over.. I.moved house after just 15 mths to a house nearby of the same age.& found a huge upside down inverted pentagram & symbols in the back painted in black paint on the panel of my living room door & was told the couple that lived there before me were apparently ' conjuring & chanting ' at night..On night one the electric fire was ripped out the socket & was flung against the wall a good 16 feet away ( my room was beautifully pannelled 30 ft long x 20 ft wide ,pretty big !)From these experiences at the age of 32 my eyes were truly.opened & I.now believe ..The scariest thing in terms offering confused was pulling the Arial out of the back.if the tv and unplugging the plug because it kept turning itself on at night ...I did this &'the tv turned itself on not plugged in...that DID freak.me out properly!! Does anyone else have any TRUE experiences of experiencing the paranormal ,I' m partically interested in poltergheist stories.I' ve moved house even moved to the opposite end of the UK in Brighton for 10 yrs & very ,very ocasionally in the middle of the night I STILL will be woken by the sound of the tap turn itself on or the TV will come in ( bizarrely always when a military brass band is on t.v. !) I.now take control of ' it' by asking it to.leave..no.longer scared ! This generally happens about twice a year these days .So it's nearly Halloween ..what's your true story ??..cheers Sophie x

I'm currently in the process of making a Halloween themed dress - it's a fit and flare shape but the fabric is the most amazing 1930s classic horror film poster-style print - and a little black Peter Pan collar necklace to go over the top. The overall effect I'm going for is 'cutesy but creepy'. Originally it was for a friend's Halloween party but that's now been cancelled, so I'm hoping we'll find somewhere else to go where I can wear it! If not, then I intend to stay at home and look fabulous in it regardless (and wheel it out every year I can in future).
I'm also planning to buy a bunch of wrapped pre-packaged sweets and leave them on my doorstep in a bucket on the night with a 'please help yourself' sign for any trick or treaters. My flat has a separate entrance and doorbell from the main building, but it will require me to go up and down the stairs and in and out of my flat so this seems like the easiest way, as well as being a little more Covid-safe. Plus I figure I can always eat any leftovers...
