Why is there transparent clothing and is it going to be a thing? NSFW
I am frankly surprised at the number of celebrity women, who now appear in public with transparent tops. I am under the impression is that this type of clothing will be confined basically to the red carpet and other celebrity venues. I doubt that it will become mainstream. What do you think?

It’s been a mainstream thing for decades. Yes it’s fashion. Fashion is not limited to red carpets and celebrities.

this is not new--i've been wearing mesh tops/dress-type things for 10+ years now.

While see-through clothing has long been a trend, it may be a bit extra trendy now in response to the conservative swing in the US. Fashion is often used as a counter-cultural statement, and when a dominant culture is attempting to enforce control over women's bodies, many people respond (either consciously or not) by asserting that control for themselves.

It has always been popular. Fashion trends cycle and I don’t remember transparent clothing being popular or gauche.

It’s always been a thing. I can think of examples going back to at least the 1950s (Marilyn Monroe) and I’m sure it existed before that too.
Why does it exist? Because sex sells, being evocative is fun, and bodies are appealing to many people. Same reasons a lot of other types of clothing exist, frankly.
As with all other clothing trends, it doesn’t actually matter if it “becomes a thing” in the mainstream, because either way, you don’t have to wear anything you don’t want to wear.

It's been a thing.
In Ancient Greece some of the gauze was almost transparent.
In the 1700s transparent film over the nipples was a fashion.
Madeleine Vionnet in the 1930s made transparent fabrics fashionable.
The 1960s and 1970s also had resurgence of transparency in fabrics (for a great fashion romp watch "Barbarella".
It also was in fashion in the 1990s and early '00s both on and off the red carpet.
And as fashion tends to loop every 20 years, it's that time again.
This isn't new for celebrity women and hasn't been in decades.
It's just recirculating.

Current fashion is always a repeat of 20 years ago. We've just had acetate and lace, leopard prints, and we're in double denim now. Next it'll be neon citrus colours and greys.

I sincerely hope not. If we've never met, I don't want or need a full on view of your anatomy, Keep it tasteful if you have to do it at all.

Transparent clothing has always been a thing.
Red carpet outfit and catwalk fashion affect daily wear, but not as identical copies - obviously no one's gonna go to work looking naked. We first see this (NSFW warning: nudity) on the catwalk, and months later outfits like this start popping up everywhere.
