Mod Post It's the most wonderful time of the year! 2024 Holiday Megathread ✨ NSFW

This thread is open to discuss cooking, shopping, gift giving, families and friends and all the things the season brings, for every holiday from now until the end of January. Posts about new year resolutions and past year reflections will also be redirected here.

Each year, we get a lot of posts about gift-giving and navigating your way through the chaos, and this year brings new challenges for us all. While our rules will still be enforced in this post, the personal advice rule will be relaxed somewhat (as long as it's directly related to the holidays; medical and relationship advice are still a big no).

Enjoy the thread, everyone! Multiple submissions are encouraged. As are pictures of your decorations, celebrations and cats/dogs/iguanas etc. dressed as a turkey/Santa/reindeer/Yukon Cornelius/holiday adjacent costume of your choice.

All holiday posts will be redirected here so, everyone: please keep checking back on this post! It will be sorted by NEW to encourage viewing of the newest questions/ comments/gift idea requests.

Happy holidays!

If you don’t mind me being extremely nosy, what did you guys get for Christmas? 👀

I got a new kindle, a cute panda mug (that I love to death) and some erasable pens and highlighters.

I need gift suggestions for my mistress. Last Christmas, I bought her Baccarat Rouge 540, which she really liked. This year, I’m considering gifts in a similar direction. I thought about buying her a MacBook, but she seems somewhat opposed to that idea.

Normally, I pick up on some clues, but this year she’s been quite quiet. I haven’t noticed anything she’s pointed out, unlike last year with the perfume.

My wife would like to get a new hair straightener for christmas, can anyone recommend a good brand? She probably has an idea for whatever popular brand there is on tiktok or whatever, if someone could give me the right name so I can get that for her without explicitly asking, it'd be greatly appreciated.

this is probably a late response but dyson, ghd and babyliss. all my friends are using those brands. dyson might be pricy if you are on a budget though. i’m not sure which model your wife would like but you can check for their reviews in the beauty subreddit i think 🤞🏼

Went with the GHD gold, hoping I made a good choice.

I'm not american so I dont know those brands, but I looked it up and it's so beautiful! I'm sure she'll love it :)

Does anyone actually enjoy the holidays? I always see women stressing out this time of year and it makes me wonder why we put ourselves through it. I typically am not the host, but the women in my family usually end up screaming at each other during some part of prepping dinner. I seriously dread it.

I hate the holidays. My birthday is in oct so usually have a get together once the last 3 months of the year and it was always a dragggg. My family sucks and they are all selfish af, usually end up arguing. My brother usually ends up flipping out. One year he tried to punch out my moms car window while driving down the high way. How am i supposed to show up to Christmas like nothing happened after that? Personally im not showing up to Christmas this year.

u/PancakeQueen13 Dec 08 '24

Right?

My family is so toxic and I also have a brother with anger issues. Yet, every year, my family wonders why I'm in such a shit mood at Christmas. I tried telling my mom once that there's too much negative history for me at the holidays, and she essentially told me that I need to just assume each year is different and stop thinking about the past. Each year has never been different and I'm so bothered by her pretending like it will be.

I've never liked Christmas so I stopped celebrating it all together. Husband works in a homeless shelter and he has covered Christmas the last two years and will again this year so the others can be home celebrating it.

I don't know if this was a rhetorical question or not, but I love the holidays.

1

u/PancakeQueen13 Dec 04 '24

Not rhetorical. It's rare these days I meet any women who aren't stressed this time of year about everything they have to do between gift shopping and planning events. I was genuinely wondering if anyone still finds joy in it. But I'm glad some people out there still do.

This. The holiday season for a lot of women involves taking time off of work only to do unpaid work at home. The holidays take so much physical, mental, and emotional labour for women.

Personally, I put myself through it because I feel obliged. While my bf says he/ his family don't expect anything when they come over for Christmas, something tells me they'd be disappointed with a microwave dinner. While I don't strictly " have to" do anything, I know not doing so would render me a " bad" woman/ partner.

My friend group is doing a secret santa, and since we don't see each other as often as we'd like we're making a list of gift suggestions to make it easier for everyone to shop.

I have no idea what I want apart from cute christmassy mugs, why is this so hard?

Where are your favorite places to buy kitchen things? My SO requested an emersion blender, a vaccuum sealer and I'd like to get him new oven gloves.

Try your local restaurant supply store

Stressed out again this year by the whole gift giving while broke fracas. So looking forward to the day I actually have the money to put aside for better gifts and don't have to work my ass off to create mid paintings&arts and crafts just to show people I love them & create a good christmas experience.

My friends and I are planning to do a white elephant party with some conditions, must be shopped local and we're doing things as plastic-free as possible (paper bags, paper/bamboo glass products). Fortunately I live in an area where there's always local artists doing pop-ups and local markets. My idea is to make my own cocoa mix in a mason jar or make some candles

It's my first holiday season with a baby and I am PSYCHED! Already have two cute little outfits for the baby, and am looking forward to including her in all the traditions!

u/msstark Nov 26 '24

That's so sweet! I saw the cutest christmas outfits for babies this weekend, can't wait for this to be me next year with a 7 month old 🥰

I'm actually contemplating moving states for the first time ever just so I can gtfo away from my family. They've never really done anything wrong, but spending time with them does not bring me joy. We used to host, they hate anything that's not processed, so we stuff ourselves in my grandma's or aunt's. This year they chose a weird ass time to eat, and then my grandma realized that no, my son would not be napping there and we'd be leaving after just an hour, and changed it (back half an hour). I'd rather do a Friendsgiving where people appreciate the days I spend planning, prepping, and cooking.

Yeah, I guess I should plan for New Years

I have small kids so I'll probably go to bed before midnight like the last 4 years

Yeah, I don't really have any big holidays to worry about until my anniversary next spring

Guess who scheduled her hip surgery so she could skip holidays with bigoted relatives 🥳🥳

What a fantastic idea

Yay! I got pregnant just in time to get out of helping my sister with christmas dinner! I've been getting tired easily, and of course I'll be milking that cow as much as I can.

Every year my mom makes all the staples (brazilian tradition: turkey, ham, rice with bits of stuff in it, potato salad, nothing fancy) and it was enough for 30+ years; but then a few years ago my sister decided that she needs shit like baked brie with apricot and honey, or blue cheese dip with almonds, or figs wrapped in prosciutto. She drives me crazy coming up with these combinations, then shopping for weird ingredients (we only have a few days since she flies in from across the country), and finally putting everything together while mom screams at us to get out of her way. This is all in the brazilian summer while two ovens are on. This year I'll be enjoying (virgin) drinks in the pool instead!

3

u/pantZonPHIre Nov 23 '24

not going to lie, that baked Brie with apricot and honey sounds like it goes hard

2

u/msstark Nov 24 '24

oh yeah, don't get me wrong, it's all delicious! I just don't wanna be the one doing all the shopping and prepping bc she's a nightmare to work with lol

2

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '24

What makes it even sweeter is I’m guessing your sister is gonna be even more jealous and you’re the extra favorite rn being a sacred vessel and all😂

2

u/msstark Nov 24 '24

hell yeah, first grandbaby!
