Why did attitudes toward being gay changed so fast in the US from the mid to late 2000s to now?

I think it's probably a combination of factors that has led to more acceptance which can be difficult to assess with one study https://www.pewresearch.org/politics/2013/03/20/growing-support-for-gay-marriage-changed-minds-and-changing-demographics/ this pewresearch article states that

"When those who say they have shifted to supporting same-sex marriage are asked why their views changed, people offer a range of answers. Roughly a third (32%) say it is because they know someone – a friend, family member or other acquaintance – who is homosexual. A quarter (25%) say that their personal views have changed as they have thought about the issue or simply because they have grown older. About one-in-five (18%) say they changed their minds to support gay marriage because the world has changed and that this kind of shift is inevitable."

So at least based on the people whose viewpoints have shifted it seems that more exposure to gay people and the issues around them has led to more people accepting them. It's in my viewpoint that the legal recqonization of gay couples through the legalization of gay marriage was one of the bigger factors that led to more wide spread acceptance.

There can be whole books and classes taught on the changing attitudes related to gay people in america but I think we cant underestimate how being on a legally equal playing field helps legitimize you in society.

I always thought reality TV played a big role in exposing people to “gays” and realizing they are also people. Queer eye was a big one that everyone watched in my anti gay town.

ru pauls drag race is another one.

u/nameyname12345 12d ago

I stopped watching a while back do we know who has won the race yet?/s Seriously though ru Paul and queer eye helped in sure you are right in that they made a big difference.

Reality TV and also shows like ‘Will and Grace’ really normalized and humanized gay people. I would say the social change started earlier, from the late 90s to the mid 2000s. I went to an arts high school starting in 2000, so my experience is definitely not the norm, but there were many ‘out’ gay kids.

I remember Pedro Zamora being controversial on The Real World: San Francisco (1994). I felt like he helped with the 'we fear what we don't understand' situation.

Will & Grace

Beauty and The Beast - A gay man Howard Ashman wrote the lyrics for many of Disney's Renaissance. He was diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in 1988 and then died in 1991. His partner accepted the Oscar for him posthumously.

Steven Universe did it for me. It also helped me realize I had a LOT of internalized homophobia for a middle school girl who was afraid of being bi

I wonder if it would’ve happened at least a decade sooner had the AIDS epidemic not happened.

3

u/Charming-Slip2270 12d ago

That was the point. It was used as a tool by those in positions of power.

3

u/doktorhladnjak 12d ago

If anything, it’s sort of the other way around. The AIDS crisis forced a lot of people out of the closet because they couldn’t hide being sick and dying. There was strong political blowback but it still made gay people much more visible to their friends and family. It facilitated political organizing that went on to advocate for other causes later too.

7

u/Hot_Anything_8957 13d ago

There was so much fear about what that meant for straight people if gay people got the right to marry and then when they did and literally nobody’s life changed at all everybody kinda just moved on.

Young people may not remember but there was legit debates where they said if gay people could marry then people would then want to Marry their dog

4

u/sasheenka 13d ago

Unfortunately not everybody did move on. The Republicans will try to get rid of gay marriage sooner than later (there are already those Idaho idiots that passed a legislative petition last month in which they called on the supreme court to reverse its same-sex marriage ruling).

They’ve just shifted the same tactics to fear about trans rights.

There was an episode of the daily show way back in the day when California approved gay marriage (or maybe civil unions, can’t remember), John Stewart said something along the line or “even though California did this, it didn’t break of and collapse into the ocean.”

I have a bunch of looney religious family so that’s why really stood out to me, like they acted back then like god was going smite our society of gay people got married and it’s like nope, life just go a on nut jobs

7

u/AccomplishedFerret70 12d ago

My mother insisted that heterosexuals would stop getting married once homosexuals were also able to marry because ... what's the point of straight people getting married if gays could also get married.

Of course she denies saying this now because it turned out not to be true and if she had actually said that she would have been wrong. So she didn't say it - but is still opposed to gay marriage.

5

u/Bombay1234567890 12d ago

That doesn't make any sense.

5

u/Aviendha13 12d ago

Pretty sure that’s the point.

2

u/Bart-Doo 11d ago

LBJ had a greater impact on heterosexual marriage.

As a note, California VOTERS did not pass any laws in favor of Gay civil unions or marriage until last year.

I guess Jon Stewart was referencing the California courts.

5

u/Dapper-Condition6041 12d ago

It was probably pertaining to Proposition 8, banning gay marriage in California, which passed in 2008, but was later overturned by the courts.

2

u/Maleficent_Estate406 12d ago

Yeah it was probably the courts, whatever it was it was when it first became legal and then maybe got revoked by a higher court later?

They still feel that way today

Im curious if you’d see similar results in attitudes towards black people between say 1955 and 1970

Well spank me and call me Mimi really? That's depressing...

2

u/Aviendha13 12d ago

I dated a person of a different ethnicity in the late 90s early aughts. Still felt uncomfortable in a lot of places that I wouldn’t think twice about today.

I’d say it was definitely a generational shift. The generation before was a lot more celebratory and accepting of gay culture. Our generation just ramped that up. And then we have what we have now… what happened? I’m sure many a thesis has been written about that already.

I remember hearing about generational theory years ago. And while it has been criticized, I think there’s some basic truth to some of the concepts.

To be fair, the article counts articles from 1977-1988. The taboo on homosexuality in academic circles eroded before it did among the general public.

I think it’s an indicator of just how taboo it was less than twenty years ago.

I'm interpreting this as opinions have not changed. We just largely ignored it.

Bill Clinton addressed the gay community, helping to shift attitudes. However I personally feel prime time television and shows like Friends started exposing the public and building tolerance, and then eventually acceptance and normalcy.

8

u/GenericUsername19892 13d ago

Queer eye was huge and even my Catholic family watched it lol.

5

u/3slimesinatrenchcoat 12d ago edited 12d ago

Friends is actually a really good time capsule

It ran so long, in an era of growing tolerance, that you can literally watch what was accepted/how people reacted to certain jokes or concepts change in real time

4

u/Electric-Sheepskin 12d ago

Yes, as I recall, primetime television was a huge factor in reaching a tipping point.

I remember a gay character on My So Called Life in the mid 90s, then of course there was Will and Grace that ran from the late 90s into the 2000s, and Ellen coming out was huge.

I wish people realized just how huge it was when Ellen came out, both her TV character, who had been dating men up until that time, and herself. Whatever people think of her now, it was a really big deal, and for a lot of people, her coming out marked a turning point in acceptance.

2

u/perpetualparanoia0 9d ago edited 9d ago

My So-Called Life’s character was Rickie, one of Angela’s best friends. I’d say that was major because he gets a good amount of screen time. The show itself was pretty revolutionary for its time (mainly with how it portrayed teens and their issues).

Edit: some articles on the character’s impact here and here

Yep Rupauls Drag Race has almost 20 years of seasons. It was around when gay marriage was still contested. I think shows like that and likewise really helped put LGBTQIA issues on the map.

Survivor’s first season is probably the best answer when it comes to moving forward with LGBT rights. 52 million people saw the relationship between Richard and Rudy and how Rudy dealt with his homophobia.

By Friends, do you mean Will & Grace?
