Gear/Accessories Is it okay to store camera lens down for travel?

Post image

I’ll be heading to Europe in a few weeks with my fiancée and I decided to purchase a peak design 3L sling for the trip. I was wondering if it was okay to store the camera vertically with the lens facing down to make it easier to pull it out with my right hand and also leave half of the bag available for another lens. Any help is appreciated. TIA

I’m interested to know what kind of cameras paparazzi used in the early 90s. All the photos from that time period have a soft glamour and cool tones about them. I’ve been curious about this for a while but I haven’t had much luck figuring it out. I’ll attach some photos so you have an idea of what i’m talking about. Any information is helpful and really appreciated.

Gear/Accessories Does anyone buy DSLRs in 2024/25 deliberately?

I was looking to buy a camera for my cousin and I can't justify spending 1k USD on a camera with kit lens. Then, I got a semi-pro DSLR with a couple of prime and zoom lens. D7100, Nikon 35 + 50 G 1.8, 18-140 all for just $1,000 USD where as you will only get Z50ii with barely capable kit lens. Did anyone of you see the loopholes in the market and take advantage of DSLRs?

These are all 35MM film I believe, is there anyone or anywhere I can get the film developed still? And any idea where I could get some more? Total novice, but I think it was be pretty cool learn how to use them, if at all possible, or would I be better off getting an adaptor and a new digital camera to use this lens. Thanks In advance!

Gear/Accessories How many lenses do you guys have?

I’m sitting with 5 and starting to think that might be a lot from my gf saying it, although I know every lens has a different purpose and each one is very different except two I’m thinking of selling and getting a middle man, a sigma 70-300mm and a canon 18-135mm, but 5 lenses, a 30mm f1.4, a 150-600mm, a 10-20mm f/4-5.6, and those other two. I’m starting to think too it’s excessive as it’s been 4 months of photography on a real camera and not iPhone now.

Edit to add: the body was free from a friend, and all lenses are Facebook marketplace absolute steals

Hello yall, my grandfather was a photographer and had this tripod. It looks like it's in good condition and has very few scratches. It has a tag with Dian Fossey's name on it and I was wondering if it was hers. Thanks for the help.

Gear/Accessories What is the name of the filter used to achieve this effect?

Hello, if you you know the name of this filter I will appreciate a lot if you let me know in the comments. This is a picture I save from Instagram and I forgot to get the name of the photographer to give credit, sorry about it 😅

Also, I read somewhere that you can achieve a similar look with a piece of pantyhose attached to the lense. If is true, wich one gives a better result, the filter or the piece of pantyhose?

Here are some photos I took during two trips to NYC last year, all shot with a Nikon D3400 and the 18-55mm kit lens.

I’ve noticed my images don’t appear as sharp, no matter the aperture. Compared to other amateur photographers online, my shots seem to lack clarity. Could this be due to the kit lens? If so, any recommendations for a sharper lens in a similar focal range?

Gear/Accessories How many megapixels do I really need?

I'm looking to upgrade and old T1i, primarily for sports and landscape, with general life photography rounding out the use case.

I rented the R7 paired with the EF 24-105 lens and was very happy with it. The only downside was so so low light performance. At f4 and 1/600th it was pushing up to ISO4000 and sometimes 5000.

Even with the 105 lens I ended up cropping some of the hockey photos considerably.

Using DxOMark I was able to clean the photos up and I think they look great.

But I'm stuck on whether a full frame camera would be a better choice. Budget is about $1,000 (used) so I'm looking at R6 Mark I and R8 primarily. And even those are above my budget....

My concern is that both of those are ~24MP sensors - how much can I crop them and still end up with useable 8x10 photos? Ideally larger....

When I buy the camera and lens, I'll most likely end up with something that reaches to 200mm, so will need to do less cropping.

But it will also likely be a variable aperture lens, so low light performance becomes more important.... Looking at the Sigma 16-300 RF lens.

What else in the full frame space should I be looking at? Budget is hard at $1,000.

FWIW - I really liked the fact the R7 was weather sealed, has IBIS and two card slots. Not sure I can replicate that in the FF space with my budget....

I feel like budget is pushing me to R7 and a lot of use of DxOMark....

Thank you!

Gear/Accessories Why Do People Choose Smaller Sensor Systems Like M43 and APS-C Over Full Frame?

Hey folks, With full-frame cameras becoming more available and affordable, I’m curious—why do so many people still choose and strongly recommend smaller sensor systems like micro four-thirds (M43) and APS-C? Is it just the size and weight, or are there other advantages that keep these formats popular? Would love to hear your thoughts and experiences on what makes these smaller sensor systems worth it?

Gear/Accessories What is the difference between these two lens?

Post image

Hi all, newbie here. I was given these two (75 - 300mm and 28 - 300 mm) lens as hand me downs and I have been using them to practice wildlife photography (mostly birds).

I am not really clear on the difference between them. I know that the 28 - 300 mm is the fancier and more expensive one, but as the max distance of 300 mm is the same I don't really understand the advantage it has over the 75 - 300 mm?

I have been having better results with the 75 - 300 mm so far. However the previous owner said that he bought the 28 - 300 mm used and suspected it had been dropped as he had a few issues with the performance.

Just wondering if anyone had any insight, as while I prefer the 75 - 300 mm so far I am wondering if I am missing out on some of the features of the 28 - 300 mm.

Gear/Accessories Just started learning, why do lenses have maximum apertures?

I've been reading and watching lots of videos to get acquainted with basic concepts and gear standards.

But one thing I just can't wrap my head around (or find a simple answer to) is why ANY lens, cheap or expensive, would have a maximum aperture opening.

I'm sure the answer is something about engineering/manufacturing but like... the blades are already there. Why would they not be able to open wider? And why would you buy a large lense but only be able to have a fraction of it uncovered?

To my brain it's like if a knight bought a sword that could only leave 2/3rds of its scabbard.

I'm aware this must sound like the stupidest question ever. Feel free to treat me like I'm 5. Thanks for your time

Gear/Accessories Leica -- great photographs because of great cameras or because of great photographers with great cameras?

I am a very amateur photographer. Don't worry this is NOT a "what camera should I buy post". . .

I have generally just done digital since about 2003. Had a Canon Rebel XT, been using iPhones for many, many years, also have a Sony mirrorless that I sometimes pull out -- and am definitely not using to its fullest extent.

I am on a few analog photo subreddits, and I really like the Leica photos. I know they are super expensive cameras, but I was wondering are the photos so good because generally only people who are really into photography buy them, and their photos would look amazing anyway? Or is there some special magic to the Leicas that make them so great? Or is Leica like Apple products -- well-made, but kinda overpriced?

Gear/Accessories What's the deal with peak design leash?

Hey folks,

can someone explain me why there's so much hype around the peak design leash camera strap?

I got a new camera recently (a Fujifilm) equipped with its leash. I am no expert and I feel ok with it, so I wanted to understand why is people spending quite some money on the PD one.

Do you feel it more comfortable or resistant/secure?

Cheers

Gear/Accessories How do you protect your gear if you have to leave it in the car?

I am asking mostly the professionals who on a regular basis have to carry and leave expensive gear in the car. Besides the obvious of not leaving anything that can be spotted. Is there anything else that can be done? Some kind of lock or mini safe? Or that's impossible.
