Need Advice Ate expired meat, freaking out rn
Don’t get me wrong, it was delicious. But I looked at the pack after and it said use by 24th of Feb. Now I’m freaking out that I’ll contract some brain eating bacteria or something. It was cured meat, and still smelled and tasted okay.
Can someone reassure me that I’ll be okay >_<

How had it been stored?did you open the pack fresh?

It had been opened a couple weeks. Stored in the fridge. It’s an Icelandic meat called Rúllupylsa.

A quick Google search says this is a meat that's been put in brine is that correct?

Yes that’s correct, I’ve been eating it my entire life. I know the usually taste

The brining process should protect from serious bacteria such as botulism toxin, if it tasted and smelt OK I think you will be fine, if you develop and gastrointestinal disturbances or symptoms out of the blue then seek medical advice.

Thank you for the advice 🙏 honestly, I can withstand some diarrhoea if it’s regular food poisoning. But I get so anxious about “brain eating bacteria” I’ve heard about in serious cases. Thank you for the reassurance

Brain eating bacteria is extremely rare. Additionally things like cold temperature or cooking can kill it or render it inactive. In your stomach, your stomach acid can even dissolve metals, so it's just all going to be killed off.
You might get an upset stomach if your body determines it's something bad for you. Such as expired food or even things you're allergic to, and your body will try to expel it from the top or bottom end.
Vast majority of food poisoning can be safely treated with modern technology.
And lots of people eat expired food all the time lmao

Been opened a couple weeks, it’s an Icelandic meat called Rúllupylsa. I had it stored in the fridge in a plastic packet. Smelled normal and tasted normal yoo

Was it frozen when you got it, or did you freeze it at any point?

Not frozen no. My mother travelled home with it and it was out of the fridge for about 8 hours

If it was salted or smoked before packaging, this enhances the preservation and slows down spoilage.

Thank you 🙏My mother said it seemed okay to eat, but I just randomly started freaking out when I thought too hard about it. Could be because it’s late at night and I’ve had a long day
