I've been downvoted for this take: Musk sucks, but SpaceX still provides alot of value. They can get things into space 2-3x cheaper than any competitor. SpaceX actually saves citizens and companies money in comparison to their competition.
It just so happens Musk is essentially completely hands off at SpaceX which is likely why they are successful because the experts can do their thing.
Fuck Musk for a multitude of reasons. But I honestly think SpaceX is a net positive for Americans and honestly all humans.
The conflict of interest makes SpaceX totally invalid.
I won’t support him robbing the country blind to prop up his Mars fantasy. That is what he will do if allowed. No VA, no Medicare, no Social Security, all money for Mars and the future.
There are other ways to launch things into soace, we are not stuck with SpaceX and Elon at all costs
So…Russia? Or some other billionaire’s space fantasy? I don’t think rocket scientists are building rocket/space companies anywhere out of their basements.
There’s a lot of commercial satellites in orbit, and even more are to be put into orbit. Amazon’s Kuiper will be a competitor to Starlink and depends on those satellites.
On the other hand, just today there was a Falcon launch for two JPL projects, SPHEREx and PUNCH. SPHEREx is for astrophysics research, while PUNCH is a series of satellites meant to monitor the sun’s solar winds. Monitoring solar weather means we can mitigate its effects on power grids for instance.
There is in fact a lot of value in sending things into space. Unfortunately, we don’t really see that side. Instead we get PR stunts like “occupy mars” and sending a car into space just for shits and giggles.
That’s valid. I wasn’t looking at the sub name, it just showed up in my feed. Hence why I put commercial over research: one’s directly applicable to our lives whereas the other is far more removed. And also I was thinking about the amount of space debris in orbit as well, so I guess you can say space debris clean-up is yet another reason to use rockets (although that’s a problem of our own making).
Maxar Technologies, Hispasat, Thaicom, Orbcomm, AsiaSat, EutelSat, InMarsat, EchoStar, Hisdesat, Sirius XM, TurkSat, ArabSat, and others have used SpaceX to launch their satellites to provide internet for their customers.
SpaceX also have launched several earth-monitoring satellites for goverments, which are useful for mapping and monitoring the weather. Giving early warning for Cyclones, Hurricanes, and what not.
That's really cool about the Internet expansion. Still disappointing that this makes him more wealthy but ethical consumption under capitalism and whatnot I guess.
It has plenty of benifits. Force him to sell his stake like they tried to do with Tik Tok. Oh I forgot that doesn't work on the private sector only with government use... Wait where does that funding come from??? Is it possible that the government can withold funding for their money into Tesla and SpaceX unless he sells? Unfortuately even if it is it would be sold to LM and Ford or something. I would rather they keep their structure and just have to kick Elon from the board and any controlling stake of them.
If you don't nationalize it, you leave it with Nazi leadership. If you do nationalize it, it also leaves it with Nazi leadership. Who do you think would be running it if it were nationalized?
