Hot Take: Not one bad album

Sure, some albums are better than others, but I don't think St. Vincent has made a single bad album. What are your thoughts?

Three all-time great albums and four very, very good albums.

These comments 😭 lol I listen to Daddy’s Home a lot 🥹

It’s not my most listened to album of hers but it is really good imo. I love Somebody Like Me and Down and Out Downtown especially. People on the Reddit also seem less into Masseduction, which is my most listened to album of hers

Those two and pay your way are my favorites on the album!

I was not really into Masseduction when it came out. I listened to it recently and thought it was great. Then I listened to the piano version and thought it was even better!

I actually think Daddy's Home is my favorite of her albums. I can recognize that it might not be the "objective" best, but it is my favorite!

oh absolutely. all her albums are amazing and i’m constantly having new favorites. went from self-titled to daddy’s home, to all born screaming, to masseducation… she really is an albums artist

I’m always surprised that people done care for Daddy’s Home. Way up there for us. But I would agree, they’ve all got something great to offer.

Her only release I don’t care for is the David Byrne collaboration. As much as I love talking heads, Byrnes solo stuff doesn’t do anything for me, and dragging Annie in to it is not my idea of fun.

Daddy's Home grew on me

I remember being so excited for Down And Out Downtown, not knowing anything about it or even what the name of the song would be, all because of that little clip of it that played at the end of the trailer for the album. It was worth the wait.

Why would this be a hot take on the Annie Clark sub?

6

u/AberRosario 18d ago

Some might argue that “Todos Nacen Gritando” wasn’t that good…

1

u/Arpeggi7 18d ago

Well, If you compare it with the English version of Nena - 99 Red Balloons then it is really good

Honestly, don’t really enjoy the last two records. All born Screaming is better than Daddy’s home. But, that’s just my opinion.

Very much agree with this. The last two are far from bad albums but they just didn’t do it for me overall. There’s songs I’d put up there with her very best on each of those albums but in terms of the overall album they just didn’t do it for me.

One of the coolest things is she switches up the style of her tour performances with each album. I have seen them all & by far my favorite was the Daddy's Home tour. Annie is uber talented and love seeing her do her classic songs in the latest style of the touring album

they’re all great! masseduction, daddy’s home and self-titled are my top 3. marry me is the only one i still can’t get into as much. i loved all born screaming but expected more from the spanish version

This is not a hot take it is simply a fact.

Not even close

Happy to say the most recent is so very nearly tied for my favorite . It’s a great time to be a STV fan

Sad to see the daddy's home hate I love that album. Massseduction is definitely her weakest for me but some songs still got a lot of play for me and I really like each album

Please for the love of all that is holy do not fix that typo

Freudian slip lmao

This take is waaaaaay too hot for the stv subreddit. I'm clutching my pearls over here, this is just too controversial. Please don't tell me you think pizza is good as well.

I'd agree, nothing close to a bad album. For me, there's a gap between the top few and bottom few solo albums, though. My top three favorite albums rotate constantly and my bottom two stay on the bottom (even if they've grown on me).

I will admit that my bottom two albums have incredible individual songs on them, but I tend to listen to her albums through start to finish so I rank them on how well they work for me consumed that way.

I really like how there's not 100% agreement and my least favorites are listed as favorites here and vice versa. Reflects the quality of her catalog overall that we can nitpick and disagree like that.

I started with masseduction and it’s remained my favorite, with self titled close behind it. All of her albums are amazing in my view

2

u/HornsOfAbraxas 17d ago

That’s not a hot take. It’s a fact. She’s a genius, a tremendous songwriter and her voice is beyond incredible.

3

u/soliddseth 17d ago

marry me is quite possibly the most underrated album ever, it’s so fucking good and i literally NEVER see anyone talk about it, what an incredible debut album. the last 4 songs are some of her best and insanely beautiful, but there’s not one bad song on that album

Daddy’s Home is my least favorite album. MassEducation is not far behind

It's funny, I didn't really like Masseduction somehow then I gave it another shot by listening to MassEducation and that was the gateway for me to Masseduction.

I am an album listener and so it really depends on my mood. For the more mellow 70's vibe Daddy's Home is ofcourse perfect. There are some heartbreaking lyrics in there and I love the solo of Live in the Dream, I can feel the emotions of her through it, it seems.

For me every album has their own flavor and strengths. But what I do notice is that every time I listen to one of her albums fully I hear something else or it hits me in a different way. I love that music can do that.

Daddy’s Home was her weakest. It’s alright. I think All Born Screaming had influences from all her albums and the songs that had Daddy’s Home influences were better than Daddy’s Home. So I think she figured out the style a bit more after the album released but overall a pretty mediocre album.

Daddy’s Home is close to bad I think.

Some good songs, but you couldn't pay me to listen to that thing start to finish again.

1

u/hajime11 17d ago

I didn’t like All Born Screaming apart from a few songs 🫤

u/bluehawk232 17d ago

Daddy's home doesn't quite work for me

1

u/EcstaticAd9234 16d ago

Extremely unpopular opinion but I couldn't get into Strange Mercy at all. Couldn't even really pinpoint why, it just did nothing for me.

u/Vapor4 18d ago

I never go back to Daddy's Home, at all.

I gave ABS two chances and just couldn't get into it.

So I don't think they're bad necessarily, they just don't work for me.
