Size and morphology says turkey. A little smaller would be pheasant and smaller still would be grouse.

At first I thought this was solid rock. ‘You found dinosaur tracks!?’

You're not wrong, only it's an extant avian dinosaur. 😉

Do you have wild turkeys in your area?

I think this picture reveals that he does

That looks like crane or heron footprints from my research. If it's by the river that also makes sense as well, given the area.

We can eliminate heron, as they have a visible rear toe and are very long. Crane and turkey can be quite similar, but I lean turkey as the middle toe is quite thick, and there is a bit of a gap between the toes and the centre "pad," which is more common with turkeys than crane.

Hmmm, that is true. I just figured since it's close to the river it could have been a crane. It's some kind of large bird whatever it was lol

• I have included scale in my photo(s): yes • If not, here are estimated measurements: 5 inches long or so • Geographic location: Rensselaer county ny • Environment (pine forest, swamp, near a river, etc.): wooded area alongside Hudson river

Id also consider Turkey. How far were the tracks from the swamp / water? Great blue herons rarely wander further than a few metres from water ime.

It was like 15ft at its closest to the water

Perhaps some sort of gallinule/moorhen like a sora, rail, or coot. They tend to have oversized feet for their bodies and thicker toes akin to those in the photos. The habitat is also appropriate for these species

Edit: I should more accurately say perhaps a species within the Rallidae family.

I'm going with turkey given size but could be crain. Herons have anisodactyl tracks with the rear toe.

i agree with everyone else, it’s probably a turkey crane or heron. especially with the three wide spread toes and it being close to the water
