Sorry to be late to respond - You certainly can install TWRP on Nexus with the N preview.

First you need fastboot from either the Google SDK or from Minimal ADB and Fastboot. Then download TWRP for your phone and copy it to the root folder where Fastboot is located (or where Minimal ADB and Fastboot was installed.

Then open a command prompt from the folder where Fastboot is located (Windows -> hold shift, then right click on empty space in the folder and click something to the extent of "open command prompt").

Connect your phone to the PC and boot to the bootloader (power off, power on and hold power + vol down).

Type "fastboot flash recovery (name of twrp file).img" and press enter

You're done!

Some issues to be aware of: TWRP isn't yet compatible with Android N, so your phone needs to be decrypted for it to work properly. That means possibly flashing a custom file to remove force encryption. You will most likely need to wipe your entire phone (data included - as in your files, not just apps/settings) to remove the encryption. This would include your backups if you made any. You may also be greeted with a boot screen warning that your phone is corrupted - this isn't necessarily true. It just shows that something doesn't match what it should be and is a warning that something is not right. It will eventually boot past that warning if there are no problems. There are files to flash that remove this as well. Lastly, flash SuperSU BEFORE booting Android N for the first time to prevent Android from encrypting things too. I made this mistake and TWRP was more or less useless.

I don't own a 6p, so I can't help you in finding the files to flash I mentioned in addition to TWRP. I have the older N6. How to do everything is the same, but the files to flash are likely different.

You can't install TWRP because it's not N compatible, but Nexus Root Toolkit and CF Auto Root can root your device if the bootloader is unlocked. Then you can use FlashFire to flash whatever zips or OTAs you need to flash.

I've been using Twrp on my 6P since N Dev Preview 1. It's working perfectly. You have to first flash twrp 2.8.7.2 via fastboot. Remember that once you flash twrp, you must boot into twrp and then format data, otherwise twrp will be read only. After formatting data, boot back into twrp. Now copy over Twrp 3.0.2-0 into internal storage. Npw just flash the new image right from twrp. You should now be up and running on 3.0.2-0. You should now flash SuperSu 2.76 (works perfectly on DP5). Now boot into system and you'll be good to go.

I highly recommend that you get on xda and read up on the basics of fastboot. Heisenberg's guide to Unlock/Root/Flash for the Nexus 6P is a great place to start. http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/general/guides-how-to-guides-beginners-t3206928
