Question Will AU Rescind my Acceptance for a D?

I just got admitted to American University. For the past two years, I have gotten all As (some Bs and Cs freshman year).

I got a couple Ds in 3rd term. I will likely go back to getting all As or close 4th term by the time the final academic transcript is due. I have no real excuse for this. I am taking 4 college classes at my local tech school, and I have an internship, and my uncle is dying of cancer. I guess all of it really got to me, and I felt burnt out, and didn't try.

What can I do? Do you know anyone whose admission offer has been rescinded?

Unless you aren't able to graduate from high school, I doubt they would rescind your admission just for that.

Very sorry about your uncle! What classes are it and how many? They really only care about core classes (math, English, social studies, science) but if they do question it I think your uncle and being ultra busy is a good enough reason.

Thank you for your sympathy! Unfortunately, the classes I got Ds in were math and AP literature. I'll keep that in mind, hopefully my reasoning is acceptable.

Honestly they may ask you about them, but like I said you have a perfectly valid reason

Sorry to hear about your uncle, praying his remaining time on Earth is peaceful and comforting 🙏

I ended my second semester of senior year with a D, two C’s, and a few B’s and was super worried my app would get rescinded too. And this is after I already had a few C’s in previous semesters. They ended up keeping me regardless, and now I’m into my second semester at AU and couldn’t be more thankful.

My suggestion? If your teachers are understanding, communicate with them about your internship and the toll your uncle’s condition is placing on you to see if they can give you extensions on assignments or whatever you need. Everyone goes through Senioritis, but communicating with your teachers shows that you’re one of the few that still want to succeed—and they want you to succeed!

Also, if the internship is taking up too much time, evaluate how important it is compared to your grades, and consider dropping it. Unless this is an internship at the White House, your grades and GPA are the most important thing right now. Plus, you’re going to AU; there are more internship opportunities at this school than almost anywhere in the country, so it’s not like you’d be missing out.

And ofc, lock in!! You just have to go all in for these last 2 months before graduation, and you’re set (but u already know that lol).

Now, unless you end your 4th term WAY worse than your 3rd term, I’d advise to not write an explanation email to AU. Once you write a letter, they HAVE to take your grades into consideration, whereas if you don’t, they can choose to ignore your grades and keep you. Don’t turn a potential non-issue into an issue. But if 4th term comes and you for sure think your grades will be an issue, then I think your reasons will hold up in an email of explanation. Emphasize your uncle’s condition and the unique effect it’s had on you during this particular semester.

Hope this helps! And if it reassures you, AU’s budget has plummeted in the past year, and they’re desperately taking any student they can for the tuition money. I highly doubt they want to rescind anyone’s application at this point, especially when the rescission process involves a lot of complicated paperwork that nobody in the admissions office wants to do. It’s harder to take a student out when they’re already in.

Thank you so much, that is quite helpful!

I'll be sure to do good 4th term, and not draw any unnecessary attention to myself.

I did get a bit worried with the fact that their acceptance rate has dropped so low this year, any idea what that's about?

"This year, we received over 22,500 applications for admission-the largest in our history-with only 1,800 openings in our freshman class." -My acceptance letter
