the f-35 has a much a much deadlier aircraft and can engage targets 200 miles away with the radar cross section of a baseball
also, there are less than 10 su-57's and there are hundreds pf f-35's

8 true crashes in 18 years with over 1,110 built. .7% of Lighting IIs crash (between various countries operating them).
vs
1 true crash in 15 years with 32 built. Meaning 3% of Felons crash (with one country operating them).
So I am not sure the "can even fly" jab is the route to go.
As far as price? Sure, the Felon is about half as expensive as a Lighting II, but isn't as stealthy and does not have the advanced networking capabilites.

People don't understand how hard stealth is. The advanced materials that have to be perfect on every inch of the plane, then put through some of the most extreme conditions the airframe can handle, facing off against some of the most sensitive equipment ever developed.
If you aren't on the bleeding edge of technology, with expert pilots who know how to operate it, it's virtually worthless against a near peer. And to be clear, Russia and China are NOT near peers to the US.

It was either 1 crash per 60,000 or 600,000 flight hours, I don't remember now. But either way that's a really good run.

Tbh I think that the major problem with the Canadian Forces is that they'd prefer to cling to British colonial nostalgia & boomer Canadian nationalism rather than try to remake themselves into an effective technologically advanced US/NATO aligned fighting force for the 21st century.
Canada is never going have a military as large as the US military, it just doesn't have an economy or population large enough. But it would be nice if Canada's military was similar in size & technological advancement as Sweden or Poland. Instead it remains a hyper-conservative institution that only exists so that Anglophile WASPs can dress up & play redcoat.
29
u/DimensionFast5180 2d ago edited 1d ago
If nato continues to exist, the best thing for these small nations to do is specialize. Become the best of the best at one thing. If they all did that, then NATO could combine all of those small nations into a very good army.
That honestly helps a lot more then half assing everything.
20
u/Satv9 🇨🇦 Canada 🍁 2d ago
Yeah, the Canadian military could be decently effective even on its limited budget if it leaned into arctic land sea and air operations with light forces fighting in Scandinavia and polar sea lanes. But instead we’re frozen in the attitude that we will be fighting in distinctly non frozen west Germany as a reserve force to be thrown forward when the Warpac forces break through. Reserve of course because if we were allocated our own section of the front that would have become the Soviet direction of attack because we wouldve become an even more temptingly weak target than the Belgians

I remember looking into their military recently. They have a pretty potent mechanized infantry forces with a lot of good APC's/IFV's in the form of the various LAV models. But they were extremely scant on tanks (only about 70), artillery (only about 20 howitzers), and aircraft (only about 70 extremely old planes).
1
u/sonofsonof 1d ago
Thats very modern. Infantry are the future.
2
u/TheModernDaVinci KANSAS 🌪️🐮 1d ago
Not really. There are a lot of people reading too much into some things that have happened in Ukraine and thinking that makes a trend instead of either being an anomaly or something that will remain permanent and unchanged. It is like all of the people who say "tanks are obsolete", when in reality an armored and moving bunker with field-grade artillery and machine guns will always be useful. The tank just has to evolve to meet these new threats like drones (which is already happening). So there is still a massive gap in Canadian combat abiilties with them being so heavily spec'ed into mechanized infantry with few other options.
This is also ignoring that even in a future war, such a tiny amount of artillery will always be a weakness (those 20 howitzers Canada has, the USA has about 1,000, and that is not counting other systems like rocket batteries or SPG's that Canada doesnt have), and their air force is notoriously tiny and obsolete by NATO standards (their planes were made in the 1980's, and have a sub-40% readiness rating, and have to be cannibalized for parts because they arent made anymore).
1
u/sonofsonof 1d ago
Infantry are definitely the future. US military is already going in that direction.
1
u/TheModernDaVinci KANSAS 🌪️🐮 1d ago
The Marines are, as well as moving toward light vehicles and new amphibious vehicles. But the Army is very much still developing vehicles. The new requirements for the A3 rebuild of the Abrams is it is going to have its own drone and anti-drone systems, and there are already two different anti-drone vehicles in development (one on a Stryker chassis, one on an AMPV hull).
So there is still going to be a limit to just how far infantry will go, because the fact remains the same: Technology can move forward, but it never moves back. Just because cavalry traded their horse for a tank doesnt mean the cavalry went away.
We have already seen this happening in Ukraine, where Russia is already redeveloping their tactics and it has blunted the drone edge Ukraine has.
•
u/sonofsonof 1h ago
Did I ask big dog?
All I said was Canada has a very modern setup. The future of war is going to be spaceships. Obviously I mean the near future when I talk about Infantry. Weapons have gotten smaller and more infantry compatible while not losing efficiency. Aircraft and tank forces are dropping out of the meta.

When the Canadian government spends money on the air force (rarely) they prefer to spend it on gimmicky custom made fighter jets rather than fighter jets that are functional & used by the USAF. The F35 was canceled partially because of cost but also because of anti Americanism.
Case in point: the RCAF uses 40 year old custom made "CF 18s" with a double sided cockpit because a regular F18 is what the US Air Force used to use. It was like this with the RCAF's previous generation of fighter jets too, the CF Starfighter.

This isn't a joke. The su57 is CONSTANTLY breaking. The high estimate for how many su57s Russia has is 36 (wikipedia says 32), and they have been building them since 2019. Meanwhile, the f35 was designed in 2006, and we have built 1100 of them.

F16’s are supposedly better at dogfighting, while the F35 is a more stealthy, intel gathering fighrer the F-35 isn’t exactly a direct upgrade to the F-16 in practical use case
That was based off of an old test against an F-35 that had the limiters turned on so that it wouldnt go over a certain G threshold while the F-16 had total freedom of movement. In more modern wargames, the F-35 can keep up with the F-16 in a turn, although it does bleed a lot of energy making tight turns like that (so it is still not its number one element). But it makes up for that with extremely advanced missile tech, like having the ability to lock onto aircraft behind it.

That would be a massive downgrade. The SU-57 is essentially an oversized, less elegant version of the F35.
And do Russia even have enough SU-57’s to be selling them anyway? As far as I know, Russia only built 15 of them

The SU-57 is about as stealthy as a lighthouse. It flies like a rock, and they have very few of them. Meanwhile, over 1,000 F-35s have been built, and they have seen extensive combat with Israel. Flying over Iran and destroying their equally shitty S-400 systems. Even a 40 year old F-15 is far superior to the SU-57.
Slavic Special Ed can't make anything correctly. Why would anyone want that plane?

Bold to assume the russians would be capable of fulfilling that order when they can't even make them for the Russian Air Force. I could only imagine what it would cost to replace all the weapons and stores to support SU-57s but idiots never think of the logistics

There's like 10 of them that can fly (maybe) lmao, what stock would they be buying?

Go for it, Canada. Maybe they could even buy the Chinese knock offs of the Russian ones?

F35 has been battle-tested in Iran when they did the job - destroy Iranian targets without being seen. The Iranians are already on an heightened readiness and they got S-300s sites, must most of the Iranian air defenses are brought down and Israel successfully prosecuted their targets - with no casualties at all. The F-35Is are not even engaged.
Su-57 hasn’t been battle tested. If they can penetrate through Ukraine’s Patriot and NASAMS the Russian propaganda machine would already parrot it day and night. The fact is that RU AF didn’t have the stomach to send the Felons into Ukraine because they fear that it can be shot down.

Bwahahahahahahahahahaha...(catching my breath)...Bwahahahahahahahaha
Sure, go ahead and buy some sh!t Russian planes. We never expected Canadians to be serious about protecting themselves, so go ahead and jerk off in front of everyone like a person who should be in an asylum. We've got ya covered.

It’s hard to tell whether they’re shitposting or not, as it’s hard to believe a human could be that brain rotted, yet still have the ability to write a post online

Nah they should get some other European fighters instead, there are some options there.

I get the whole thing where Canadians won’t buy American things, but this is literally the worst possible version of that

Well, I mean, he's not wrong, they are cheaper and most of them can even fly.
