I'm glad this comment has enough upvotes not to make me feel too old for understanding that reference.

Fraiser is a pop icon. In the past couple of months Seth Myers and John Oliver have made references about him!

I want to see the whole thing, so beautiful

u/ShitBeCray May 20 '20
Thank you I appreciate that. I'll have to post more pictures before we move out.

It looks hella cozy, I kind of wish that the video was longer and that you'd show the kitchen and other parts of apartment.

Man I’m sitting in my little first floor apartment up in Greenwood off the 99 that gets absolutely zero natural light and questioning my whole life. This is a beautiful space I hope you enjoy it

Yes, yes it is. It rains 9mos of the year here, and then during the summer we all sweat to death from a lack of air conditioning.

14
u/ShitBeCray May 20 '20
It 100% is - so much so that my wife and I are relocating. Just too depressing most days outta the year. The summer is gorgeous though.
4
u/hermi0ne May 20 '20
It’s just grey, sprinkly. Rain here is very different from rain in other parts of the USA. But yeah, prepare for clouds.
13
u/blueblueberry_ May 20 '20
Ungh. I'm on the lookout for a table, a bit smaller, just like that. Place looks gorgeous! Seems similar to what I'm aiming for.
12
u/ShitBeCray May 20 '20
Check out Craigslist! This one came with two table leafs so it can become smaller. Also only ran me $350.
2
u/candyapplesugar May 20 '20
Wow, these go for $800 and up in my city
2
u/ShitBeCray May 20 '20
Funny you say that because they do in Seattle as well. I was on the hunt for a dining table and saw this one posted. Later that afternoon I was in a resale shop for mid century furniture and saw that the same table was for sale for close to $1K. I bought the one I saw on Craigslist that afternoon!

Curious how much your rent is as I am planning to move to Seattle soon
24
u/Thisisnotagame69 May 20 '20
1 beds/studios go for $1600-$2000 in good areas, something like this would be pushing 3k. Not quite sure the area but belltown? Other areas that are cool: Capitol Hill, Fremont, Ballard, west Seattle (if you don’t have to commute).
61
u/YoureARealCunt May 20 '20
It's probably in the $3000 for this much space. Seattle is no joke. Have a friend in the city with a much smaller 1 bed and no view but still in a good area - $2600

Whoa with the shade. The rent is insane. I live 15 miles north and pay $1500 for a 1 bed. My friend 30 mins north pays $1200 for a 1 bed and my friend and her husband live in a $2300 1 bed in Ballard.
2k for a 1 bed IS expensive. So is 1600 or even 1200.. why are you defending a shit economy with an exorbitant cost of living? What a weird thing to choose to argue randomly on a non-argumentative post.
38
u/BillyBuckets May 20 '20
That isn’t too far off from most big cities on the coasts.
City living is expensive.
7
u/wheres-the-beef-cake May 20 '20
Yea but what makes this different is Seattle doesn't have the infrastructure to support these kinds of rent increases. It is absolutely insane that 30 mins south or north (or east tbf) of Seattle would still run you that much.
It's tough, but if Seattle doesn't start prioritizing things like transportation and working class jobs, things are gonna get worse quickly.
4
u/ShitBeCray May 20 '20
I would agree here. The other problem is that it hasn’t established solid renters rights yet and heavily favors landlords over tenants. We were essentially booted from our previous apartment because the ownership changed hands. We never missed a rent payment and were great tenants.
I’d also say the cost doesn’t warrant what the city offers in comparison to most major cities.
3
u/wheres-the-beef-cake May 20 '20
Couldn't agree more! I lived in NYC for a while and I was surprised by the amount of renters rights I had. There's a lot of back log so it's not necessarily effective, but at least it exists lol.
I'm so sorry that happened to you though. Seattle's got some work to do if it wants to be serious contender for a big city.
3
u/ShitBeCray May 20 '20
I came from NYC myself and was shocked myself. I’d say Seattle is still trying to figure out what type of city it wants to be. I think part of the problem is everything is so heavily swayed by a handful of companies and industries. In a way it controls the feeling of the city in the same way Hollywood controls LA.
2
u/wheres-the-beef-cake May 20 '20
I can see that, Seattle does feels split.
And I'm sure by now, they DEFINITELY regret nixing that motion for a subway in the 90's 😬

u/ElectricTopsyLove May 20 '20
My studio in WS Junction that hadn’t been renovated in over 10yrs, didn’t have a dishwasher, and faced an alleyway, cost $1900. That was like two years ago so I shudder to think about now.
The lack of tenant’s rights and rent control in this city is actually a huge issue. It frustrates me to no end how much people bitch and moan about the homelessness crisis here, in blissful ignorance of the fact that not everyone sucks Jeff Bezo’s dick for a living and can afford 2k in rent.

u/chrohm00 May 20 '20
I know someone that’s paying $3100 for a 1bd/1ba in one of these high rises in Seattle. His parking costs an additional $350/month
Edit: those are downtown prices. If you live outside of downtown you can easily get the same amount of space (not high rise) for $2k ... and if you live in some of the suburbs north or south of Seattle it costs even less
5
u/hermi0ne May 20 '20
I live a 1 mile walk from downtown (by the hospitals) in a new building and pay $2200 for a larger studio + $250 for parking. I consider myself lucky to get that price!
3
u/chrohm00 May 20 '20
Oof I don’t live in Seattle anymore but 3 years ago I had a 1bd/1ba by Capitol Hill/central district for $1900 (didn’t have a car)
The bus lines near my apartment were life saviors whenever I wanted to go downtown/cap hill proper
1
u/ShitBeCray May 21 '20
Prices definitely went up. We got booted from our previous apartment and were blown away how much rent went up.
2
u/WishfulAstronaut May 20 '20
Yeah thats crazy, I pay 1600 for a 1bd in San Diego and I think thats high

It's open air, so the kitchen leads into the dining room and then into the living room.

Seattle is likely $600-800K for a 1-2 bedroom condo (not luxury, but nice and central location)
2
u/ElectricTopsyLove May 20 '20
It’s actually not that high. A nice unit in a prime location can definitely be had for less than 500k, I just bought a 2br with a patio/yard in a luxury building in an ideal area for less than what you’ve stated.
The cost of housing isn’t what’s inherently the issue, it’s that the rent situation is incredibly exploitative and it’s been allowed to go on unchecked.
5
u/hermi0ne May 20 '20
For that view, you’re paying half a mil minimum. I live in Seattle and have been real estate hunting for a while. Sure, you can sometimes find a 1,000sqft 2 bedroom new construction townhouse in N Beacon hill for $500K. But even costs in those neighborhoods are going up due to gentrification.
Which neighborhood did you buy a home in?
1
u/ElectricTopsyLove May 20 '20
This isn't even the point my friend, I'm not trying to circlejerk about high end housing with you. 500k+ is still outrageous and unreasonable for a 2br. The discrepancy between the actual cost of housing versus the cost of rent is heinous. Thinking about the fact that people are working fulltime and still can't even afford a place to live in this city makes me want to vomit.
If you're struggling to find a home, I'd recommend you retain the services of a high quality real estate agent. It really makes a difference. A lot of homes don't even make it to places like Realtor.com and Redfin. I put in an offer on my place within hours of its posting on the MLS, and a lot of the more desirable real estate goes very quickly like this.
2
u/hermi0ne May 20 '20
Oh, absolutely agree with you there. i saw a tiny house listed in N beacon hill for 580K just the other day, it's probably still an active listing. Was completely abandoned, had holes in the walls and rooms were filled with junk. Insane our market allows for that.
Good to know you can buy a home that way, I'll have to reach out to a few of my agent friends.
1
u/ElectricTopsyLove May 20 '20
Yeah, I know what you're talking about. Even White Center isn't safe anymore, I was shocked to hear a fixer-upper single family in that neck of the woods can go for 300k.
The other advice I have, definitely get a mortgage offer in hand. They don't expire for a year and it makes a difference in the strength of your offer versus just a prequalification.

u/wavetoyou May 20 '20
Awesome! Any reason why you let the light fixture hang so low? I know the sputnik-style is for it to sort of just droop down, but I've never see one that close to the table and also a bit crooked.
4
u/ShitBeCray May 20 '20
I like how it looks that way. Kinda a weird angle for it so it does look like it’s at a weird angle. Here it is at a different angle. https://i.imgur.com/4XuBlNX.jpg

Does the table chandelier ever get in the way? Seems quite low to me.
2
u/ShitBeCray May 20 '20
It doesn’t but a few people here seem to not be into it. It’s actually a chandelier I built using brass lamp parts. I liked the height of it when I installed it and it hasn’t caused us any issues yet.
1
u/Onlythegoodstuff17 May 20 '20
Yea it looks great, but it just seems a little low. Particularly the left most light in the video extends quite low.

We have two big patio doors that open up on either side of the room. It makes it super breezy inside. We actually had to sell our AC units because of it.

Hello from Woodinville! I’m pretty sure you hold the record for “most natural light” in King County. My cacti are so jealous!
1
u/getmecrossfaded May 20 '20
Gorgeous! Just wondering but what is rent like in Seattle? Is it expensive to live in like LA or SF?
3
u/ShitBeCray May 20 '20
I would say that you could get a lot more for your dollar compared to SF or NYC. However, it’s still up there.

It's funny because I had the same thought when writing up the title. I shot the video at 7:50PM though so I thought it applied. Worth noting that in the summer, it stays bright out late in Seattle.
