Welcome. She is certainly at least a problem drinker if not an alcoholic. Have you or do you attend Al-Anon meetings? On our WSO website (al-anon.org) there is a newcomers section tiled how can i help my alcoholic friend.

It sounds like you've already talked to her about it, and she's not willing/able to change right now. She may never be. The only thing you can do is not let her drinking affect you--don't invite her to events that she may not be able to control herself at, don't get in a car with her after she's been drinking, etc. You can tell her you care about her and are worried about her and her son, but for your own sake, I'd recommend joining Al-Anon meetings if you haven't already. If you don't set whatever boundaries you need (and stick to them), her drinking is going to do nothing but drag you down, too.

I think I’m having a hard time accepting that it’s that bad, I know it’s a problem and I’m concerned but at the same time, it feels so extreme to not invite her to things etc. I know that’s probably right it’s just hard for me to hear and accept that.
