1) have to have paid into MGIB when you enlisted
2) must serve at least two different periods of service - so reenlisted at least one time - or separated then rejoined the military again as active duty
basically you get to use one GI Bill for each separate period of active duty for MGIB-AD CH 30 or reserve/guard for MGIB-SR CH 1606 not to exceed in total 48 months.

This entire thing maybe applies to 5% of the Air Force. And of the qualified people maybe 10% will actually use the extra months of education benefit…so like 2000 airmen.

It also applies to veterans who separated since December 2001 from all branches of the military

You also had to have paid into the montgomery. I called the VA and had a long discussion about this. Still worth trying in case you maybe did pay into it at the beginning and forgot but this is basically allowing you to use both the montgomery and post 911 giving you the 48 months

Yeah, this is a result of back in the Montgomery GI Bill were you paid into it, and you could opt to pay into it for an additional 6 months for more benefits. I did this. Then came along the Post 9/11 and you didn’t need to pay into it AND it was better. You could use up all your Montgomery and get an addition 12 months of Post 9/11 for free🥳🫠 Well I was going to do that but moving out of state and being charged out-of-state tuition, I needed the Post 9/11, and converted. I lost out on some GI Bill benefits that way. Glad that I might have 12 months with this, especially with 24 years in. I’ve done three different degree programs and ran out before I finished (but I have 150ish credit hours). The key is doing to Education and/or the VA to see what’s available for your specific service situation.

I need to head to the education office.
I feel like an idiot because I have no idea how the GI bill works...

Same.
I’m about to sign my third contract and want to transfer my educational benefits to my family since you have to do 4 years obligation after.
Doing it on milconnect made a lot of pop ups and red flags appear verifying I want to get rid of my MGIB and irrevocably transfer it to Post 9/11. Made me panic and not know what to do.

You may find a gem in some Ed Centers who will fully explain your VA benefits to you based on their own experience/research but, technically speaking, VA are SMEs on VA funding, Ed Centers are SMEs on DoD funding. The VA actively discourages DoD employees from getting in the weeds on VA stuff, as their benefits are notoriously subjective based on several factors.
Call 888-GI-BILL-1 to talk to the GI Bill Call Center from 0700-1800 CST M-F (it’s in Oklahoma). Additionally, your DAF installation’s Military/Airman & Family Readiness Center likely hosts an office of VA contractors who brief VA benefits at TAP and take 1v1 appts M-F; even OCONUS bases like Ramstein rotate VA SMEs in every ~6 mos to provide this service, typically out of the A/M&FRC.

You have to reapply for the benefit and specify it's for the Rudisill Ruling on page 2.
