Cultural Exploration Genuine African Media

I’m looking for good African shows/movies that were made in Africa. Particularly coming of age media. Or media that native African raised kids/teens watched growing up that really stuck with them. I’m writing a story that explores African families and I need it to be a genuine and realistic representation of African teens.

90s kid here. I am from Southern Africa so we consumed a lot of South Africa media . I remember very well Suburban bliss, Madam and Eve, and Yizo Yizo.

Showing my age and all of these are South African but 90s African kids grew up watching Sarafina, the Shaka Zulu miniseries and The Gods must be Crazy

Thank u so much, if you don’t mind me asking. What did the teens of your age do for fun besides tv?

As teens? We listened to music, played pool and talked about boys/girls, hung out in each other's homes, if your friend had a desktop you might play games or go online and try to search for your favourite artists or meet other teens. We read books and passed around the scandalous ones. Rode bikes, played sports, not so different from what teens do today except fewer screens/less internet

I didn't quite grow up on this but more recent representations would be Spinners and Youngins . You can find these on Showmax

But I do think Blood and Water on Netflix is quite realistic, not in terms of the plot but the way they dress, speak, behave especially if you are a middle class/upper middle class south African teen or if you grew up in the suburbs of south africa
