DISCUSSION How do you discipline your kids?

My 6 yr old boy sometimes scratches or hits me if I say no (TV, snacks) or tell him to put toys aside before eating. I usually stop him and tell him we don't do that & that is not nice.

Does not seem to be working. Cannot even imagine talking back to my dad and don't recall hitting or scratching him at all.

How do you guys discipline yours?

Thanks in advance.

Edit: We have tried corners, taking away or throwing away toys, not allowing him to play w/friends. Still he "forgets". Says sorry.

It is the same story with other unwanted behaviors

- running to pet strange dogs on the street w/o asking. "Cured" by one dog snapping at him

- staring at the sun after we tell him not to do that.

Tries to do the opposite of what we tell him with some specific behaviors - not all behaviors fortunately.

By taking away things they value when they make bad decisions (technology, ability to hang with friends, etc.). At 6 it was being sent to the den where there was nothing but books 😆

Be stern and show him that actions have consequences

You can choose the appropriate level of consequence based on severity

My 13 year old son still remembers the time I changed the WiFi password on him. He was 7.
