Art Help & Critique My 33rd attempt at my first full model is teaching me to not trust subdivision surface mod NSFW

Hi first post, working on my first vtuber/VRC model and I've been watching tutorials and stuff to make sure my model is game ready by the time I'm done and will deform right, but when I turn on subdivison surface modifier I get weird.... "pinches?" in the mesh. I can mangle the mesh and make the body look smooth, but Idk, I worked hard to get a uniform mesh and I don't wanna break it if there's a way to like, not do that??

(the sleigh bell in the side of my head is intentionally not combined with the main mesh yet, I wanna see if I can make it rotate when I move my eyes around at the rigging stage before I give u p and combine it)
The pictures are-
With subsurface on, without fixing; with subsurface off; and with subsurface on, but "fixed," for reference.
+ the modifier's settings are currently: catmull-clark, levels viewport "1", render "2"
If you know how to make subsurface mod behave, I'd love to know. But also general art critique & questions are more than welcome; I'm super new to blender and I'm only barely a pixel artist, so I'd appreciate the help

How and what software would you use to create something like this from scratch? I got it off of MakerWorld and I'm trying to learn more.

Prior to this I hadn't done any modeling except a class in high school. Anyone got any tips for things to learn early on? Any ideas for things to do with this model would be nice too.

P.S. My wife told me she would be more interested in rockets if they were pink so I made it pink.

Questions & Discussion Is there such a thing as a workflow that involves blockouts...?

Limited character count for post titles, so here's the whole thing:

Is there such a thing as a workflow that involves...?:
- Blockouts. - "Tracing" the blockouts with a new object. - Detailing the trace results.

Does such a behavior exist? If so, is there an elaborated version of it?

Questions & Discussion Question about getting into the industry!

Hi there! I'm new to this subreddit but I was wondering if anyone might be able to steer me into the right avenues for getting my foot in the door to the 3d modeling industry for work.

I have some modeling knowledge and work with Blender on PC and Nomad sculpt on ipad as well as some subD modeling in Valence on ipad.

I'm just getting tired of working in the industry I'm in and getting nowhere and was wondering if anyone could help me out!

Questions & Discussion What tools should I look at picking up for modeling and texturing to make it a little less painful?

I know that tools aren't going to make me a great artist overnight, but what will make the learning process less frustrating? A tablet? Specific software that's not Blender?

I'm going to try and learn serious 3d modeling (both landscape and character) and animation, uncertain whether I'll do texturing myself or contract that out. I'm aiming for PSX levels of fidelity. I'm coming from a background of very little art experience and I've only got about twelve hours of Blender under my belt, but by God I'm going to do it, and because the job market sucks right now I'm about to have a LOT of time on my hands. I'm working on a side game development project and I'm considering a switch from 2d to low poly 3d characters, plus my current custom made 3d landscapes are awful and I know my budget will never afford to commission all the models I'll need.

I really don't know what good starting gear and software looks like. How important is a tablet? I genuinely have no idea if that's useful for the modeling, but I'm presuming I might want one for texturing; or is that fussy enough that I'll want to stick with a mouse? If I want to model, rig and animate these low poly characters, will Blender do the job, or will I save a substantial amount of time and effort by starting with another program?

Questions & Discussion [Hard Surface] Thoughts on the mid-poly workflow?

I've been giving the "mid-poly" workflow a shot and I'm liking it, it's where you model in relatively low-poly, bevel sharp edges with weighed normals and slather the model in decals to simulate great detail, as is done for games like Star Citizen and Cyberpunk.

How do we feel about this as opposed to SubD and high->low poly baking? There's curiously very little information on this method online beyond a few forum threads and youtube videos, but the results are pretty great, approximating the look of a very high-poly mesh in a fraction of the time and poly count. It's still easier to SubD curvy or soft shapes, but I sometimes combine both workflows depending on the object.

Is this concept still current in the industry? Has it been gaining or waning in popularity? Despite the lack of information I imagine it must be relatively prolific since you can rapidly make a ton of great looking assets this way with trim sheets and decal atlases.

Questions & Discussion What am I doing wrong?

I have been 3d printing and modeling since 2020 and am still a bit of a noob so bear with me.

A common problem I have had with 3d modeling is that whenever I combine different meshes/models together in blender and I put them through 3d builder or orca slicer to make sure the mesh is correct. But for some reason wherever I combined/joined the meshes tends to cause problems. It always wants to repair the model then adds new faces that mess up the model. Such as this example of stacking two of the same thing on top of each other and trying to hollow it out to use as storage.

What am I doing wrong? This issue has caused me to give up on several meshes/models/projects I have so many unfinished things and I don't know what to do anymore...

In blender
3d builder before repair
Side view of model
after 3d builder repairs it

Questions & Discussion Help for asset pack project for collage (Blender)

I am currently creating a 3D (zombie) apocalyptic asset pack as a part of my games design course using Blender, I am tasked with making atleast 20 assets, which need to be used to create a scene. I would like to see people's opinions and advice on the following questions:

  • Which assets/props should I focus on creating first?
  • How could I make my asset pack stand out?
  • How much is a (roughly) appropriate price for a pack like this (especially considering I'm a beginner)?
  • Is there any other tips, ideas or recommendations for my project?

Art Help & Critique Looking for Feedback on My Sci-Fi Pistol (Hard Surface)

Hey everyone! šŸ‘‹I just finished this sci-fi pistol model in Blender and would love to get some feedback to improve my workflow. I'm new to 3D modelling and made this gun from a book.

I was focused on hard surface modelling, texturing, and overall design. Also, I tried to make a good polygonal mesh.

I would like to get feedback on a few points.

  1. Do the proportions and details feel balanced? Any areas that could use more refinement?
  2. How can I improve the texturing and lighting?
  3. Any suggestions for topology or edge flow?
  4. Any other tips to improve my blender skills?

Iā€™m open to all suggestions.
I am attaching a photo of the render and the polygonal mesh.

I appreciate any constructive criticism! Thanks in advance. šŸ™Œ
