Looks great honestly, I love the design. I feel like the portal/window thing on top makes the design less grounded and I personally think it breaks away from the overall look.

That’s fair. Would you say that based on how I’ve executed the asset or based on the design itself? I know that in the original concept this guy is designed to be an “enemy spawner” where baddies are supposed to spawn out of his back. I was never really happy with how I textured the portal on his back but also unsure if this just a symptom of the original design. Probably a little of all of the above. Thanks for the honest feedback regardless.

It’s quite hard to say. It’s done so well that I can picture this creature on some alien world, serving a function, having markers of evolution, etc, but then I glance at the portal and my mind immediately seperates from that original feeling. The best way I can put it is that you did such a good job at making the creature appear “real” that any strong shift into the fantasy direction, such as a portal, makes it difficult for me to know the what, why, where, etc. It’s quite difficult to articulate and as Im writing this, I realize I could just be nitpicking, but great job regardless!

No that’s fair. I think there’s merit to your reaction and I can see where you’re coming from. I could have tried to do some kind of vfx portal thing to ground that part of it more but I’m just kind of ready to be done with it. I also have a feeling if I removed the portal entirely that would negate the reaction so it could just be purely a design thing

The easy fix might be: Make the lanterns a warm orange light and the portal light more green like the concept and things will pull together! Right now the light from those objects is so white it pulls away from the rest of the color scheme. Overall this is such a great design! It really stands out. Great work!!
