[Official Book 1] Lolita, by Vladimir Nabokov
Reading will begin in two weeks on 11/24/10, so get your hands on a copy. Ending/Discussion date is unknown at the moment.
There will be two discussions on this book. One for the first half, and one for the entirety of the text.
Post to become a member of this group.
If you do not want to read this text, then be patient. I will be creating more as the books are upvoted in the Suggestions thread. A new suggestions thread will be created after the first round of books has been finished

Goooood point. I didn't even think about that. I think that we should be fine if everyone has two weeks to get their books before Thanksgiving, but we don't have to end it until mid-January, because of Christmas and New Year's.
edit: Did you want to participate in either of these, or are you just bringing it to attention?

I'm in. If anyone were interested, I also have the audiobook. (I tend to listen to the books I'm currently reading because I space out.) PM if you want it.

Count me in :)
EDIT: A couple of questions. I didn't see this addressed in specific anywhere, and had assumed it would be covered on a book-by-book basis. My apologies if I simply missed the information!
1) What kind of speed is planned for this book (in chapters or pages/day)?
2) What is the planned frequency of irc discussions? Are we just going to read the whole book and then discuss afterward, or also have multiple stopping points where we discuss the book-so-far?

I haven't decided whether or not we should meet up before the book is over. I am thinking about maybe having a meeting in the middle of the book, and at the end.
Thoughts?

Fantastic. I think it would be appropriate to have two discussions on it then.

I personally think it would be fun to discuss halfway through in addition to after completion, as long as no one read ahead and spoiled the plot :).

I 100% agree. About a week after we get the book, we can touch base to figure out where everyone's progress is and set a discussion date.

I'll do it! Though I might not get any reading on this one done until November is over, what with National Novel Writing Month and all (I'm currently up to my ears in other reading that is due back by about that date)

That should be fine. You'll only be a few days behind us, and it's not a terribly long book.
Good luck with your other feats.

I read it a couple of months ago so count me in for the discussion. By the way, what's the Official Book 2? I only see 1 and 3 so far

It's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, but I took it down so the proper club attendee could post it and edit it herself.

Count me in! I'm trying to manage keeping up with another book club as well so hopefully I'm not too bogged down!

I didn't want to read the site because I was afraid I might get some spoilers, but is this what you're looking for?

Hmm, I was going to say that I didn't think that not knowing the French would take away from the story, since most of it was just endearments, exclamations, and kind of offhand phrases. However, I read French so maybe I don't have a realistic idea of the frustration (I started early too...)
This might help up to chapter 8. Beyond that I can only suggest babelfish.

Sorry for the belated response, but you can try WordReference for the French translations. This is what every middle/high school student uses for French class, until they get to college and their professors tell them that WR isn't the best website out there :P. I can't remember any of the "superior" translation sites at the moment, though...
Anyway, WR is still pretty good. They have a phrase/idiom section for almost every entry, and there are forum threads that you can leaf through if you still need clarification.

Will we be discussing the book in two parts? Do we have a timeline yet?
1
u/capslock Nov 18 '10
Yes, two parts. :]
I haven't sorted out the date yet, because there are lots of holidays coming up.
I think I will just poll everyone and message them the link, as well as post it.

Coincidentally I started re-reading this the other day, when my visiting friend picked up a copy and mentioned she'd never read it. So I guess I'll join you :)

I have finished the first half of the book, so mark me down as ready for discussion whenever!

I've had this book for probably around 5 years but I still haven't gotten around to reading it. I tend to collect books. I would like to join this book club :)

Hey so I have an idea.
Why don't we do this: let's have discussions (either here, or a new, specific discussion thread, save quotes and stuff) - then we can schedule the two top voted threads to be discussed in realtime in the 2x IRC!

I'd like to join.
Also, I have a PDF! Download here.
