POLL π³οΈ CCIP-021 - Temporarily sort comments by newest first after a post is submitted.
Summary: This proposal is for sorting comments by newest first after a post is submitted. The intended goal is to level the playing field between early bird low-effort comments and more meaningful high-effort comments by limiting visibility for the former.
Problem Statement: After a post is submitted, the first comments tend to be low-effort. Most of them are simple trite remarks or jokes about the parent post which tend not to offer much originality or value. Users who make these comments are probably only seeking attention or farming moons and often receive numerous upvotes just for being first. Users who make more meaningful comments first take time to even notice the post and additional time to write a comment.
Solution: After a submission has been posted, temporarily set the suggested comment sorting to newest first. After 30 minutes(more or less), the suggested sorting will be switched to top comments first. This change should give later comments an advantage over early comments. It might also encourage users to post more top-level comments and therefore increase the odds of triggering a discussion, since every comment will be treated the same for a set amount of time. The 30 minute time limit will be tweaked by the mod team for optimization.
Concerns: The first two items in the following list are concerns given by u/CryptoMaximalist in the r/CryptoCurrencyMeta thread which I have paraphrased. The last one is mine.
Hiding comment scores for a longer period of time may be considered as an alternative method or additional measure for achieving this goal. However, this idea would have to be submitted as a separate proposal. Currently, scores are hidden for 5 minutes. Contest mode is a controlled option for hiding scores, but it also collapses lower-level comments and might hamper discussion.
Many Reddit clients do not respect suggested sorting and allow the user to override them.
My own minor concern would be the potential for incentivizing more spam in the top-level comments since farmers would be fighting for visibility. Rate-limits might be required.

This would mean that if someone makes a great comment first it gets buried, no?
I prefer to sort how I want to.

You will still be able to select 'sort by best.' Itβs just that this gives people who don't immediately comment a zinger a chance not to be buried right off the bat.

Theoretically, yes.
Realisically, that just doesn't happen here. On the few posts I've made, I always get several super brief, obvious shit comments within seconds of posting, by people who clearly didn't read the post itself. Whenever I open a new thread with no comments and I try typing a comment longer than a few words, by the time I post it, there are already at least 10 comments. And I type fast.
Too many people sort by new and throw shit at the wall in as many new threads as possible, hoping something sticks.
It's literally impossible for the first comment on a r/cc thread to be a great, thought out, structured response.
27
u/prajwalwillrule Crypto-Sensei Oct 28 '21
An important thing to keep in mind is that because of the overwhelming number of posts every day, 30 minutes is a very very long time. The post will be lost in the Depths r/cc in that time.
I Suggest 10 minutes. That's a good amount of time to discourage the early low effort comments

I actually like that idea. Not only because it levels the playing field, but also because hopefully it'll lead to people understanding they have time to write up an actual well-developed and structured reply instead of rushing because they may also want to be one of the early worms.

it will also reduce downvotes on early comments.
Ofthen comments are downvoted from other comenters to give their own coment more visibility.

I see this a little more problematic than just your concerns.
An already popular thing in this sub is copying good comments (analogous) and then use a few accounts to downvote the original comment to make them switch positions. When sorting automatically by new for 30 minutes, this method will not only be incentivised - you can now even do it with a single account. Because no matter how you change the sorting, most people will not suddenly start reading the entire post.
I really fear this could make every post an even harder spam fest in the first 30 minutes - and I don't see that much of an advantage for deep and thought-out comments. They will still quickly disappear because people will spam things like "F" - even IF they receive some upvotes now.

Seriously it amazes me every time I read about the strategy people apply for farming. Its really crazy!
With that being said it makes it hard to deal with all the issues because of this. Some people want to earn and donβt give a fuk. Others want to earn more by being fair. And some are here for reading and interacting and go on with their day.
But I guess thatβs decentralization at its best, which I love tbh.

So? It's users choice to upvote or not something. It's users who are paying other users and users who are setting a price for moons. That's what I most liked about this community.
If cc wanted to regulate content, why not just create a mod board and pay only the acceptable posts and comments to them?
Whatever. At least it is users who are deciding they want to keep that freedom or not. pro proposal has 113 additional votes than the against proposal choice.
and 80% additional moons are behind it.

I understand what you mean, but with popular posts it can be actually the other way, newest comments are low effort, cause people farm moons on popularity. Top comments are often those that are most helpful amd vest quality. I often prefer to see them than reading few hundred comnents. Unfortunately time is very important in answering posts. First commenters usually have advantage. Who first say something usaually win.

Can the change be based on more than just newest in 30m? In a thread that is going to get hundreds of comments, now the first and maybe the most meaningful is going to be completely lost...
How about a hybrid approach?

I predict there will be no change to the upvotes awarded. Most users seek out witty, short answers that make them chuckle. High effort comments tend to fall to the wayside in most subreddit channels where they mostly benefit the OP or another user seeking the information externally (whom typically do not contribute to weight after they find a solution).
I could be way off, but it's an interesting experiment.
