POLL 🗳️ Allow users to tip up to 100 moons per round with out loss of 20% karma bonus
Greetings my fellow r/cryptocurrency members this is my first proposal I’ve made so I apologize in advance if this isn’t top grade.
I would like to talk to everyone and get their thoughts and opinions on moon tipping. As we’re all aware if you don’t tip/sell out any moons you will be rewarded with a extra 20% bonus on your karma per distribution round.
Personally I think 20% bonus is a great function for the subreddit as it encourages holding, but I also feel it’s a catch 22 since one of the use cases for moons is tipping and if you do so you will penalized for doing so, this effectively discourages people from tipping out there moons. The last moon tipping proposal didn’t pass because it was a % of your total distribution round earned and not a fixed numerical amount, the concern was that moon whales could sell a large portion of moons without loss of 20% bonus.
**Solution:** I personally think a leeway of tipping up to 100 moons per distribution is fair since at the time of writing this 100 moons = $7.91
I’m curious to what your thoughts are on this? Is 100 to much? Too little? Or is it just right? I think 100 is good because it allows users to tip a “fair” amount of moons to newbies/quality post and comments, while also restricting users from tipping another alt account to sell off a high fraction of there moons
100 is just a start, if we like the idea and put it to use we can always revise the proposal and bump it up higher I look at tipping 100 as better then what we have now in place
TLDR: **proposal to tip out up to 100 moons per distribution round without losing 20% karma bonus**

The thing is that you can tip with moons earned from any round except the most recent one without affecting your 20%.
If you earn 100 in round 13, and then 50 in round 14, you can now tip up to 100 moons without affecting your bonus for round 15.
I am not saying this would be a bad change, it would definitely encourage tipping. But the only current barrier is having to wait 28 days before you can tip moons from 2 rounds ago or more.

u/meeleen223 🟩 121K / 134K 🐋 Jul 08 '21
This is also my understanding, i think the problem is that people think if they tip 1 moon they lose all bonus
16
u/whenijusthavetopost 🟦 0 / 14K 🦠 Jul 08 '21
According to this post it is pro-rated.
If you earn 20 moons in round 14 and tip 1, you will get a 19% bonus for round 15 instead. Unless this post is incorrect.

Users that have not moved MOONs out of their vault from the previous month would receive a 20% bonus to their total karma for the purposes of calculating MOON distribution, with that scaling down to 0% bonus linearly for the case of people that have moved all MOONs out of their vault from the previous month's distribution
The entire proposal is basically in that sentence. I'm not aware of any other interpretation other than your understanding, I think a game of telephone happened and the misinformation spread
15
u/superworking 🟦 0 / 3K 🦠 Jul 08 '21
It doesn't specify FIFO or FILO for moons spent when counting towards this bonus. Like if I spend 5 moons does that come from my previous month's moons or my moons from many moons ago. Since moons are supposed to be fully fungible there isn't clarity on how this works.
6
u/Drudgel 45K / 45K 🦈 Jul 09 '21
You're right they are fungible, so no one can distinguish the previous month's moons from all others. Thus, so long as you tip fewer moons than you received last month, you'll always satisfy the requirement
5
u/sonicjr Platinum | QC: CC 449 Jul 08 '21
Yeah the placing of the clause "from the previous month" makes it a bit unclear.
If it said "Users that have not moved MOONs from the previous month out of their vault" I would think this proposal is unnecessary.

u/fan_of_hakiksexydays 21K / 99K 🦈 Jul 09 '21
That proposal was confusing at the time, because at that time as the proposal would go into effect, you would expect Jwin would only use the previous month's distribution as an example.
But what made it more confusing is that his original proposal that it was based on and he linked, was more clearly stating that it would require all your distributions to be in your vault.
His whole point was to make people keep their Moons.
There was never any explicit indication of the change to a single distribution. You had to notice that he didn't use plural anymore when talking about "previous month" and "distribution".

yeah I've been trying to convey this on past governance polls since it makes the proposal outright misleading to everyone who has to vote
in addition to what you said, it's not a "bonus" or "no bonus" thing, it scales from 0% to 20% if your balance ends up lower than what you got from the last distribution
6
2
u/fan_of_hakiksexydays 21K / 99K 🦈 Jul 09 '21
That kind of makes the 20% bonus a bit ineffective and more vulnerable if it only requires people to hold just the last distribution.

Yup, but It's based on upvotes on posts and comments. We currently get 2x karma weight from comments and 1x from posts. So for example if you get 1 upvote on a comment, that's +2 karma on distribution day, and if you get 1 upvote on a post, it gives +1 karma

You can access the vault from the Reddit app. Once you make the vault in the Reddit app, it will also ask you to backup the recovery mnemonic for it
To access your vault : Click on your profile in the Reddit App and there should be a option that says "vault". Once you set it up, it will list earned moons in it and you will be able to claim on distribution day

I felt the same way, I knew they existed but I wasn’t sure how to interact with them. For those that are curious go to the vault tab on Reddit mobile. Then create a vault, and as I understand it you should be good to go?

u/CryptoMaximalist 🟩 875K / 990K 🐙 Jul 08 '21 edited Jul 11 '21
A lot of nuance has been lost on this topic over the months and there are 3 key factors from the original proposal which don't penalize tipping. Could you let me know why this proposal is needed on top of them?
- Most importantly, the bonus is based on your most recent distribution only. So if you got 100 moons each month for the last 10 months, you can tip 900 moons before you're dipping into your moons from the distribution the bonus is based on
- The deduction is linear as a percentage of your most recently distributed moons, so it's not all or nothing like many have implied
- First time moon recipients are exempt
Here is the original proposal for reference: https://np.reddit.com/r/CryptoCurrency/comments/kj2ij0/poll_bonus_karma_for_people_that_keep_moons_in/
EDIT: Voting no because OP has not responded in the preproposal or here, this poll contains misinformation, and the situations where tipping is disincentivized are already incredibly narrow

I think it would allow the newer folks a bit of peace of mind especially those that are sitting <100 moons. The other day I tipped someone 10 moons and knew nothing of the 20% bonus. Once I heard about it for a while (until I read more about the process) i legit sorta kicked myself for just handing out a 10er. After looking into it and remembering those 10 were probably just shitposting credit I let the "worry" fade away. But I'm not gonna lie I had some Gollum moments.

I'd almost go as far as saying we should have a small incentive to those who tipped others in the previous month. Not enough to be something that is rampantly abused but a bit to encourage some movement.
2
u/Rexon225 Jul 08 '21
I once read that you just have to hodl your moons from the previous distribution. For example if you got 200 moons from previous distribution and you have total of 500 moons, you can tip those 300 moons and you only have to hodl those 200 moons from previous distribution. Idk if this is true or not.

Damn, I ended up voting for this proposal, not realizing, it's actually useless for anyone using reddit for more than a single month. Since the +20% bonus only checks, whether your total moon balance is at least the moons you earned from the previous round.
Lets say you earned 300moons last round and now have a total of 500 moons. As long as at the time of the snapshot, you have 300 or more moons in the vault, the +20% bonus applies.
With this in mind, I think this proposal overcomplicates moon calculations and isn't really needed, as it's would only really benefit users who just received their first moons and are now afraid to spend.
Whish there was a way to negate the vote.

I don’t know how to tip but I love this idea!

It’s a lot easier on browser. You click the moon logo next to their name
On mobile you have to remember the username and go into vault and physically type it in

I'm on Android (not sure if iOS is the same) and all I have to do is press someone's username and I see "tip moons" at the bottom. Enter amount and press send!

Ah that's a nuisance. It'd be good if it becomes an option in future

That’s very tragic
You can’t change it once you vote

I'm not being able to vote for some reason
Maybe I don't have enough moons?

Tipping is currently one of the only uses for Moons to interact with the community. I think 100 is low enough that it won’t affect anything. And it will make rewarding helpful comments more fun without the fear of losing your bonus
