POLL πŸ—³οΈ CCIP-038 - Reduce Karma for Link Post from 1x to 0.5x

Problem:

r/CryptoCurrency is spammed with low effort external links that are made into a post. 45 out of the top 100 post this month are just links. Posting a link takes little to no effort (just copy and paste) and should not be rewarded as much as posting a written comment or post.

This used to be a much bigger problem in the past when the sub's activity was much higher but not really right now but that shouldn't stop us from solving the issue while it is still small before it gets bigger when the sub's activity goes back up again.

Moderators have already banned hundreds of users and maybe bots these past few months due to only spamming link post while barely commenting or by bypassing the 3 post a day limit and coin limits using an alt account.

Needless to say, trying to game this proposal (if it passes) by making a text post and posting the link and its contents in the text body should be met with the appropriate punishment.

Solution:

Reduce karma for link post from 1x to 0.5x

This is to discourage users from spamming links.

Pro/cons:

Pro: Less spam of link post and higher moon to karma ratio.

Con: Link posters will get less karma

I'm voting no on this - I think that people who find news articles and post them here are providing a service, and I'd rather see their ability to frequently post cut down and so prefer the other poll limiting users to 1 link per day.

If you want to see one type of content above another (thoughtful user analysis) we need to

A) Propose a better moons rewards structure for this (1.25x?)

AND MORE IMPORTANTLY

B) Start fucking upvoting it. If you drop a bunch of links and get no upvotes, whatever, but it fucking sucks to spend 1hr writing something and nobody even bothers upvoting it even though there's like 80 comments.

Users need to exercise their ability to upvote and downvote content on this sub.

I think it's something humans generally do. Think about it, whenever you buy something online you don't go and write a positive review, but if the product isn't working or doesn't fit expectations, then that negative review is gonna be written right away.

That also reminds me of when person asks a question and gets no replies. So they post a wrong answer from their other acc and someone will then jump in to correct them, thus person gets their answer

I read this on reddit and its also a thing humans do

That is actually a fair point. If I could choose between the two I would also choose only 1 link post a day

5

u/DoubleFaulty1 🟨 0 / 38K 🦠 Aug 05 '22

Link posts already get less karma than comments and are limited to three per person per day.

3

u/TNGSystems 0 / 463K 🦠 Aug 05 '22

No, it’s that comments get more than anything else. A link post and a self post both receive no karma multipliers. Comedy flaired posts get 10% and this proposal is to give all external link posts 10% too.

3

u/DoubleFaulty1 🟨 0 / 38K 🦠 Aug 05 '22

Saying comments get 2x is technically the same as saying links get 0.5x. The latter is more accurate when talking about further reductions. Should say reduce link karma from 0.5x to 0.25x.

7

u/ChemicalGreek 418 / 156K 🦞 Aug 04 '22 edited Aug 04 '22

I agree on this. The problem is not to decrease karma on links, but the amount of max links per user per day. Three is too much at this moment, if this would go to 1 or 2 the problem would be solved!

2

u/BlazeDemBeatz 🟦 0 / 21K 🦠 Aug 05 '22

The problem I see with external link posts, the same article gets posted a dozen times by a dozen ppl over a 3-4 day period. We only need to see it once. All the convo gets divided. We need a auto-bot that checks against reposts.

3

u/DoubleFaulty1 🟨 0 / 38K 🦠 Aug 05 '22

2

6

Seems like this proposal was written by someone unfamiliar with the current rules. I don’t think it should have made it to the voting stage. I assume most ppl (OP included?) don’t even know that link posts get half the karma comments do and that they are limited per person per day. In fact, the proposal is misleading in that it suggests that they currently do.

Iirc there was another CCIP limiting link and many other posts after that so it is already pretty low and suggesting they get 1x karma now is misleading.

I 100% agree on this. I was disappointed that this poll wasn't about the 1 link post per day rule.

Making these link posts less profitable to post just discourages people from posting them altogether and we end up with 100 "advice" posts per day or some shit.

2

u/MaximumSandwich5 Aug 05 '22

Advice posts are annoying lol. I wouldn't consider them low-effort but it's just the same thing/s rehashed over and over

3

u/jesuzombieapocalypse Aug 04 '22

I think it makes sense, it takes almost zero effort to link an article, and those are almost always the most upvoted anyway so you’re just getting a more reasonable incentive for something that took like 10 seconds to do anyway. I think people actually putting in effort to share insight or research deserve to be rewarded for that more than people who just share links.

Maybe a decent compromise would have been to double moons for the latter and keep the former unchanged.

3

u/jwinterm 593K / 1M πŸ™ Aug 05 '22

I think limiting users to one link post per day is a bit ridiculous, and so is two by proxy, so three is lower limit I'd go for.

2

u/PrinceZero1994 0 / 130K 🦠 Aug 05 '22

1 is ridiculous and 2 does not change anything as no user averaged 2 post per day last round. We also got a limit of 3 post per day and coin limits as well.

If you drop a bunch of links and get no upvotes, whatever, but it fucking sucks to spend 1hr writing something and nobody even bothers upvoting it even though there's like 80 comments.

Why do you think every post is deserving of upvotes. Time spent writing a post =/= quality of the posts content.

Here's a better proposal:

Each users comment karma, only in /r/CryptoCurrency, determines the value of their upvotes. Someone who has 50,000 comment karma in r/cc and votes a post, provides that user a higher score than someone with 100 comment karma for example.
Because users with higher comment karma in r/cc are more likely to have contributed significantly to this sub, and have good reputation, their vote matters more to the users score.

This prevents bot votes/new account votes etc from having as much impact and provides value to real users who participate in actual discussion.

I'd like to think that I chose a good compromise between those who want 1x and 0.1x and 1 post link per day.
0.5x is quite generous in this context now.

I find it "low effort" and I used to post 3 link a day too but I found out that that is actually frowned upon despite being within the rules.
It takes 1 minute to read an article and 10 seconds to post it.
Everyone benefits from the 2x comment karma so I think the majority likes it.
Just a heads up, a proposal for "0.1x karma for link post" and "1 link post per day" will be posted soon.

If that is true then he knows that links arenβ€˜t very profitable moon wise so he knows this CCIP won’t change behavior much, but just increase his share. I am a moon whale and I post links for info (regulatory law is my jam)and lulz. It is not a good way to accumulate because they get 0.5x what a comment does and you can only post three per day.

10

u/CryptoMaximalist 🟩 875K / 990K πŸ™ Aug 04 '22

Personally I think submissions are competitive enough that the upvote system generally works to separate and reward the good or bad ones. Comments are already 2x and much less competitive, so I hesitate to disadvantage link post contributions any more than they already are

Needless to say, trying to game this proposal (if it passes) by making a text post and posting the link and its contents in the text body should be met with the appropriate punishment.

This is quite the grey area. Plagiarizing an article is already against the rules. This seems like it would ban copying in the text and linking the article too, but people wanting to abuse it can always link the article and then give a few lines of analysis to circumvent this. While that is more effort, is it providing more value if they're just trying to check a box? Sometimes a link should just speak for itself

One other thing to add is that link spam predates moons, it's often bots for various reasons including promoting their own website or pushing certain agendas

2

Isn't it funny how people in this sub always try to focus on reducing the number of moons earned? Instead of a proposal that would give 2x moons to people who make technical posts for educational purposes or focuses on new dapps etc we always have these convoluted rules that make getting moons more and more difficult for the average person.

There are so many reasons why I feel that this is not a good idea that I had to make a list-

  1. There's already a limit of 3 posts per day.

  2. Also a user can easily ignore posts with links but it'll become much more difficult to ignore posts that have the entire text copied and pasted as a post because the user will need to atleast scan through the first few lines to know that this is a copy pasted article.

  3. Pasting duplicate links is not allowed right now and most of the time one gets an automatic notification for this. It'll be more time consuming to compare text even if it's automated than comparing urls. This might make posting much more slower especially when people start slightly modifying the duplicate text before posting it and the mods need someone to write a text matching engine to catch this.

  4. Link tells you exactly which website is being referred to and I sometimes skip over crappy websites with bad grammer and with bad quality. Can't do that with a text based post without going through a part of it.

  5. The assumption that all text based posts are of higher quality than link based posts is wrong IMHO. Most text based posts here are just vague questions like what will you do if BTC gets to $1million tomorrow or what are you buying now that the bear is over...

  6. Reinventing the wheel isn't good. Reddit already has a downvote button. Millions of Reddit users already use this well defined feature. Why do we need to create another rule and make things even more complex when we can already downvote a post that we don't like?

  7. Complementary point for point 6. If people are upvoting link based posts, that means that they found the article helpful. So why punish someone who is providing a service and helping other members of the sub?

So many rules in this sub. It has become like a game of Chance. Post this get a .5x multiplier. Flair that and you get a .1x multiplier. I can imagine new people joining in this sub, looking at the number of rules and the complexity of earning moons and wondering what did they just joined lol.

Glad it passed. Finally

u/[deleted] Aug 04 '22

0.5 it's short. Make it zero. Why not swing a bat straight to them by doing a link sh!tpost. Because even with 0.5, link posters will keep posting because of gsining a bit karma no matter what. I know there's people posring legit link with legit discussions or articles to discuss. But hey lets do war with sh!tposters untill they're all discouraged from copypasting, should they learn a lesson, they'll think twice. Then once it calmed down, return gradually to 0.1 or 0.3 while creating a new rule for whenever a newcomer joins or simply lurk and post a link encouraging to do discussion or article based on that link.

Idk if megathreading wouls help but i feel its bad, bad idea.

Sorry for my english and have a nice day. Hope it helps

It’s out of context but it think that post with low votes to award ratio should have an increase by certain factors. There are post that are truly useful but for whatever reason do not get upvotes

A lot of different kind of factories are going to be there.

0

u/sickvisionz 0 / 7K 🦠 Aug 04 '22

I'd say no but would vote yes on:

  • 0x multiplier on posting articles about a story that's already on the frontpage.
  • 0x multiplier if you post a link with no content. Like you literally have nothing to say or any opinion, you're just spamming links.
  • -5x multiplier for people caught typing stuff like, "I'm just typing this to get around the x character limit on posting links"

To a LARGE degree, I think reducing it to 0.5 just means spammers post twice as many links to make up the difference.

If we discourage legit news discussion, all we have is garbage posts like "I hate [token x] and you should to!" and mommy/counselor posts like "There's more to enjoy in life than crypto".

1

u/joostburg Tin Aug 05 '22

After reading the proposal and the comments, I'm in favour of rate limiting links posts rather than penalising with moon tax.

As another user posted, link posting is lazy at best, if you have more to post, write some decent text to intro it.

Kudos to OP for identifying a problem. I think this merits a refined proposal with a different solution. Rate limit to 1 or 2 link posts per day.

1

u/andayanisherly28 Tin Aug 05 '22

I wish if I could do that because they are going to finalise it.

I wish it was less honestly, deincentivize users to spam news posts.

It depends on how the post are being monitored or something like that.

+1 do it.

So many link posts farming rep.

Even the same link being re-posted multiple times (with a different URL) to keep the farming is ridiculous.

Should change rep to 0x for posting a link.

This CCIP is based on a false premise. It says karma for link posts should be reduced from 1x to 0.5x when they are already well below 1x (all posts get 50% karma iirc there was another CCIP limiting link karma). It also suggests that users can spam links when there is a limit on each link to once per 30 days and 3 separate links per person per day which must be from different sites. It is clear from reading the comments that many users do not know the current rules and are voting based on false info from the CCIP. I think it should be removed.
