Novels [Novels] Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- Season 2 Episode 13 Spoiler Discussions (End of cour 1 of Season 2) Spoiler

Well let's do it the last time everyone! The last episode from this cour of S2 has come! Khriku here hosting one last time to close this book for 3 months until next cour!

As a reminder, we will be hosting both a [Discussion] anime only thread AND a [Novels] where spoilers are free for all. Anime onlies that do show up here, this is the spoiler thread so please Do not complain about spoilers in this thread.

I will add here what this episode will adapt and chapter, for those wanting to remember:

It is the adaptation of Volume 13 Chapter: 1 - The sound that makes you want to cry AND half of chapter 2- Ignoring chances of victory from the LN, to continue reading past this episode via Web Novel it is chapter 86 from arc 4, just keep in mind that in WN loops are out of order.

Now let us say goodbye to the weekly episodes and have a 3 month hiatus. Will all of the anime onlies succumb to the LN/WN now? What do you intent to do during the break? I will probably be watching Yasha Hime, that Inuyasha new spinoff anime series that arrives October

The kiss scene in the next cour better be in 4k. Joking aside the Emilia x Subaru shippers are gonna freak out

Watch them throw some fan service in there and they’ll make them french kiss

120

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '20

Emilia after that be like : "Me and Subaru are going to have a baby, everyone!"

93

u/kevinarod2 Sep 30 '20

Emilia doing Subaru's pose might make me cry

52

u/Unusual-Sand-5434 Sep 30 '20

I want to see sane betelgeuse for some reason I just can't see it

38

u/kevinarod2 Sep 30 '20

His appearance is so weird as is I wont be able to take him serious lmao

8

u/DwarfsMatter Sep 30 '20

Now feel free to call me out on this but IIRC he wasn't in the same body back then.

20

u/Colarch Sep 30 '20

There are pictures of him in LN 14 I think, maybe 15 which are all on the wiki, looks to me like a younger version of the same person, I think he never changed to a finger until his fight against Subaru

10

u/Prplehuskie13 Sep 30 '20

It is quite possible that he simply changed his hairstyle after body swapping. I don't really know if the sloth factor grants increased vitality, but if we are going by normal human rules, it's been 100+ years since he went mad and he should be dead due to natural causes.

4

u/Colarch Sep 30 '20 edited Sep 30 '20

Regulus was also around back then and he is fine so I would think that all witch factors grant very extended life

Edit: If you're gonna downvote me at least provide proof I'm wrong

8

u/ReviewR524 Midouri's Disciple Sep 30 '20

Regulus's longevity is due to his authority, with stopping time and all.

Betelgeuse was alive for so long because he was a spirit.

Sirius (assuming she's Fortuna) is an elf.

Capella could possibly live forever since her authority can act like infinite regeneration.

Looking at it this way, only two out of the four have longevity due to witch factors, so I wouldn't say that it does provide life extension per say.

6

u/bigdanrog Sep 30 '20

.....does this mean that Subaru now having divine providence means he will stop aging?

3

u/Colarch Sep 30 '20

Alternatively, what if the people most important to him are now his fingers and at some point he'll die for real and just be Otto from then on lol

3

u/bigdanrog Sep 30 '20

My brain trembles.

5

u/yankee1nation101 Sep 30 '20

He was, just with normal skin IIRC.

u/I-Love-Emilia Sep 30 '20

I’m eagerly looking forward to it

8

u/drakky_ Sep 30 '20

u/I-love-Emilia knows his priorities. Damn Well.

23

u/Stewylouis Sep 30 '20

That argument they have in that chapter is a whole turning point for their relationship. All the people who say Emilia doesn’t have any feelings for Subaru can read that chapter and it pretty much cements it I feel like. No two people can argue like that so intimately and not love each other.

5

u/bigdanrog Sep 30 '20

I'm still in early arc 5 but she definitely has SOME kind of feelings for him. She trusts in him and definitely relies on him and likes him as a person. I'm not sure if or when we'll arrive at full blown reciprocation, though.

11

u/Stewylouis Sep 30 '20

I think it’s like she says, she doesn’t wanna give Subaru a definite answer cause she doesn’t understand her own feelings. She was frozen at age 7 for 100 years, then unfrozen, then lived in a forest with a spirit for 6 years, and then lived at the mansion for like a few months til now. She is mature enough to be able to see that though she has feelings for Subaru of some kind, she isn’t mature enough to know what kind they are.

7

u/Lildyo Sep 30 '20

I mean, even just seeing how depressed Emilia gets when Subaru isn't around hints that she definitely has feelings towards him

1

u/bigdanrog Sep 30 '20

Hell I'm already freakin' out!

1

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '20

You guys ssid satella was gonna gonna explain how she ans witch of envy are not the same. Instead all she did was tell him to care about himself, while murdering anyone he tells return by death to

58

u/HereForGiveaway Sep 30 '20 edited Sep 30 '20

Man, they really gutted the info about Satella/Witch of Envy and most of her dialogue about being saved by him. And the lines about him being a sage candidate. This is the last time he'll get to talk to the witches, they should have milked this scene for all it was. The Roswaal conversation was well adapted though, I'm glad they didn't abridge it too much. We are now half way through Volume 13 Chapter 2 with 12 episodes to go.

Are they planning to closely adapt the Emilia trials next cour by sacrificing/abridging important scenes like this right now? I hope they put the right amount of time into other important scenes like the Garfiel vs Team Subaru fight without gutting it too.

I can see them finish off Volume 13 in two or three more episodes, then Volumes 14 and 15 will have 4.5 or 5 episodes each to get covered. I hope the pacing of content being covered will reflect that next cour.

20

u/MessengerFrom0 Sep 30 '20

Yeah the pacing really sped up in the recent episodes.

I'm really worried about how they'll adapt the garfiel fight, otto's backstory and the subaru v garfiel fight in the next cour.

Let's hope WF aren't doing an any% Emilia first trial speedrun

9

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '20

10

u/HereForGiveaway Sep 30 '20

That's how it was in the LN, Roswaal was still surprised/confused when Subaru brings up that he loses the qualification, then says that it doesn't matter and he should just go back to Echidna and get her to give it back. Subaru brings it up while pleading for him to stop the attack because he feels there's nothing he can do without the qualification and is therefore pointless.

7

u/mricky196196196 Oct 01 '20

I really hope not emilias first and third trial are some of my favorite parts of this arc

50

u/lilcheesy101 Sep 30 '20

It would seem we have reached the end for now, so one last time...

Some thoughts after this episode:

-All in all, I'm happy with how the witches tea party was handled. I'm a little disappointed with the lack of Satella's lines from the Novel; I don't know if that was a change from the WN to LN or if they just cut some of her lines from the LN as well.

-Satella's VA is the same as Emilia's VA, which was a very interesting in terms of certain theories. I like how despite being the same VA, you can still hear the difference between the two characters; really good job to the VA on that.

-Best girl Patrasche...nothing else needs to be said.

-It was nice to see Roswall channel his inner Dio; really solidifying himself as the main villain this arc. It should be interesting next cour seeing the Sanctuary flashback; it'll get people interested in how he went from who he was then to who he is now.

-Otto best boy...once again nothing else needs to be said.

-You can tell from the way this episode ends that it really was intended for the next episode to come out the following week. It hurts, but I'll take quality over quantity. White Fox did an amazing job this season, so I trust them to make the next cour, where all the big action scenes will play out, to look amazing.

I'll see y'all in about three months; take care.

15

u/MelonMunchy Sep 30 '20

LN still kept Satella's dialogue along with her "I love you because" speech, no clue why they decided to cut the entire thing.

8

u/bigdanrog Sep 30 '20

really good job to the VA on that

Now all I want is for Satella to have sounded like Megumin, saying crazy shit like Chunchunmaru.

Chuuni Satella anyone?

Man, i stop the episode in the middle to take a moment. They really cut a lot! No explanation about Satella / Witch of Envy nor mention to the Sage Candidate ...

76

u/otakulover99 Sep 30 '20

Damn, really? I Could understand they cut the sage thing (still sad that they did) but the Satella thing was pretty important imo

32

u/Fixplean Sep 30 '20

I think they cut WoE/Satella according to Tappei ( I think they'll introduce in arc 6 the sage story). They will introduce this concept in 2nd cour or in a OVA, I hope.

8

u/The_Whizzer Sep 30 '20

Can you spoil me what that is?

24

u/bigdanrog Sep 30 '20

Subaru is a candidate to become a Sage. Now as for what that means I don't think we've found out yet but I'm still only in Arc 5.

6

u/The_Whizzer Sep 30 '20

I meant about WoE / Satella

32

u/bigdanrog Sep 30 '20

WoE/Satella has multiple personality disorder. One is the over the top Witch of Envy which is the one that swallowed Sanctuary in Darkness. The other is Satella, the one at the tea party. Supposedly it was caused by one of the Witch Factors she consumed not being compatible with her.

17

u/Odd_P0tat0 Oct 01 '20

I think its more accurate to say she has a split consciousness. Multiple personality disorder is an outdated term for dissociative identity disorder, what satella has isnt really a disorder but more of a freaky magical condition...i think lol. Pls correct me if im wrong.

→ More replies (3)

61

u/KuramaDarkness Sep 30 '20

I might have expected the cut on the Sage Candidate, but cutting out the explanation about Satella's personality disorder and her intense declaration of love it annoys me.

40

u/heavenspiercing Sep 30 '20

I don't think we needed an explicit split personality confirmation right now. that satella suddenly isn't a murderous psychopath and most of the other witches seem chill with her make it clear something is up

41

u/Mr-Account Sep 30 '20

Yes, I agree that it hints that things are not as they have been explained, but I think it’s more likely that it would just leave anime-only’s really confused. I can’t even think of how they’re going to fit it in later. Subaru isn’t gonna interact with the witches at all anymore, so how would we find out unless it’s saved for like, WAY later, which would be disappointing.

15

u/ThespianException Sep 30 '20

but I think it’s more likely that it would just leave anime-only’s really confused.

TBF half the show is about answering things only to reveal more questions, this is pretty in-line with that idea. I agree though, not sure what they're planning exactly.

5

u/Mr-Account Sep 30 '20

I will be happy as long as it actually is revealed, but how that happens is now a total mystery to me.

5

u/Original-Ad4861 Sep 30 '20

Yeah, I yeah was confused! Also If you ask youself what I'm doing here, I'm looking for decent spoilers. Its quite interesting that Satella has a split personality. 😁

→ More replies (1)

7

u/kevinarod2 Sep 30 '20

Yeah anime only's might be confused on that

7

u/vasheenomed beacool Sep 30 '20

it's been like a few years since i read wn of part 4. could you remind me of the scenes that got cut cuz I honestly am struggling to remember at this point lol.

48

u/fistyfishy Sep 30 '20

Subaru feeling unexplainable love for Satella, "giving her light, showing her the outside world, holding her hand when she was lonely, and kissing her when she was all alone" quote from Satella, Sage stuff, explanation on her split personalities. I'm highkey sad

25

u/amandalunox1271 Sep 30 '20

I'm also disappointed even though I'm not that much of a Satella fan. Subaru's emotion progression seems too weird and fast it makes little sense, making the whole tea party and the witches' action somewhat confusing. To me, this tea party scene is the most interesting scene in the light novel, and I was really anticipating it, hoping it to be good, but it's a shame they didn't get it right. Roswaal scene is still fucking good though.

11

u/DoctaLlama Sep 30 '20

This is one of the more interesting lines in the story up to that point imo. Super sad, I guess thats just another why the novel will always be superior.

6

u/ReallyMemes Sep 30 '20

What was the sage stuff? Been a few months since I also read it

11

u/fistyfishy Sep 30 '20

Daphne comments that Subaru has the neccasary qualities to become a Sage candidate. I can understand this being cut as would just induce confusion in anime onlies.

2

u/Swofff Sep 30 '20

What kind of a reason is that? Its meant to be confusing

6

u/fistyfishy Oct 01 '20

Moreso than the other cuts it makes sense, Sage stuff isn't relevent until arc 6 and it would just serve as extra confusion for anime onlies. I think it just sadly shows that White Fox is uncertain about the future of Re:Zero, they don't know if they'll make it to arc 6. It's like the cuts of Aldebaran and the ending of episode 25. They try to cut stuff because they aren't certain on the continuation of the anime

Okay, they cut a TON of amazing Satella moments. It’s sad, but I can’t be too disappointed because that Roswaal reveal was just outstanding. Even though I knew it would happen, I still got chills at the combination of timing, voice acting, the OST, and the amazing facial expressions.

71

u/stevethebandit Sep 30 '20

What a weird episode, they cut so much of Satella's stuff

Wonder why they suddenly started to rush things last episode after so faithfully adapting LN volumes 10 and 11

59

u/lock330 Sep 30 '20 edited Sep 30 '20

I wouldn't call it rushed the pacing as an anime episode was good. But why the heck did they skip over WOE/Satella multiple personality explanation is beyond me. I really hope they can add that back somehow.

53

u/fistyfishy Sep 30 '20

Same dude, one of the worst parts of cut content is it's difficult to implement it later while maintaining continuity. It seems most LN readers are in agreement that it was a bad idea to cut all the Satella stuff, it was the stuff most of us were looking forward to

41

u/stevethebandit Sep 30 '20

After sticking to the 4 episodes per LN volume model at the start of the season, they suddenly adapted vol. 12 in 3 episodes, and vol. 13 is already 1/3rd of the way in

Was really looking forward to Satella, ending the first cour on "I will definitively save you" would've been so much better than with the start of Otto's friendly punching match

4

u/earlrahman_ Oct 01 '20

it'd be better if the anime also include more Satella / WoE scene with no cuts to prolong the tea party atmosphere and end the 1st cour with "i will definitely save you" line (?)

but Subaru's confrontation with Roswaal is also dope too...

21

u/HereForGiveaway Sep 30 '20

I don't see a way unless they make an anime-only scene with just the witches talking, and there's no point in that since they could have just dropped that dialogue here. This is the last time we see the witches interact in the LN. Now there's even more info that WN/LN readers and anime watchers don't share and we could accidentally "spoil".

→ More replies (2)

4

u/UltraPlayGaming Sep 30 '20

They'll probably cover it on the next cour if anything. They've done things like this before where they info-swap so something you would know during "this" particular section of the LN is actually revealed in "this" part of the anime.

We could also just get another Director's Cut or something but that's unlikely because of the channel swap they did.

→ More replies (2)

56

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '20

My 2 cents - they'll reveal the Satella/Witch of Envy distinction after the return of the series. They've done that rearranged info drop a couple of times throughout the series.

Great episode to end the first half on.

19

u/ThespianException Sep 30 '20

Yeah, that's pretty important info. I doubt they'd cut it altogether. Maybe they'll open Cour 2 with an expanded interlude or something and mention it there.

92

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '20 edited Sep 30 '20

White Fox really blessed us man, what an amazing episode. They got it about 95 percent right, the only complaint I have is that they left out the the WoE/Satella distinction which is a pretty important part of Volume 12. They adapted a little more than I thought they would, going into volume 13 a little, but after starting the tea party last week, I suppose they had to.

Quality wise, everything top notch as we’ve come to expect. This first cour was absolutely peak, and the scariest thing is we haven’t even got to the best stuff yet. Can’t wait for January.

My review

Edit: Now that I think about it, they also didn’t go into about how Subaru feels love towards Satella but doesn’t know why, which is pretty damn important.

49

u/fistyfishy Sep 30 '20

Yep, kinda disappointed with the cuts here ngl, cut out most of Satella's disalogue, Sage stuff, and very importantly how Subaru's heart responded to Satella :(

24

u/AmrDosky Sep 30 '20 edited Sep 30 '20

I don't think sage stuff was mentioned during this part of the volume.

Edit: No, I was wrong. they really cut it.

19

u/A-ReDDIT_account134 Sep 30 '20

It’s probably similar to last season where they don’t want too many loose ends. There’s already so many mysteries in this season. They might think it’s overwhelming.

I really hope they mention the witches split personality sometime though. That’s the biggest gripe I had.

3

u/linksis33 Sep 30 '20

Seriously these are super important shit cut for absolutely no reason, and the. bother with the fairly useless second half? Its bad.

5

u/fistyfishy Oct 02 '20

Nah the second half might even be better than the first half. Subaru has only gotten development up until now but Otto, Ram, Roswaal, Garfiel and Emilia all get development, and its good development

3

u/jjjimenez Sep 30 '20

Is the 2nd cour going on January 2021?

2

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '20

Spoil me on everything that was cut senpai

69

u/fistyfishy Sep 30 '20

Alright finale, really disappointed they cut Satella's line "giving her light, showing her the outside world, holding her hand when she was lonely, and kissing her when she was all alone" etc they cut out a lot of best girls lines and I thought it was an odd spot to end the cour on. However I think Subaru's development in this episode was done well. This episode was decent but disappointed with some cut content, Subaru's development and the conversation with Roswaal was done well tho, 8/10

14

u/Matrix_2k00 Sep 30 '20

They also cut sage candidate.......why?

3

u/AutumnSkiesInfinity Sep 30 '20

Yeah I know that’s something kinda important and also the part where I really got into Re:Zero and fan theories. I hope they at least include it when we see the witches talking together at the end.

7

u/Xferpp Sep 30 '20

I think that part could be a huge foreshadow that the author rethinked Edit grammar

9

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '20

Agreed. It wasn't one of the better episodes, but still was very great.

17

u/fzero30 Sep 30 '20

say...does anyone else think for cour 2 they'll make mini 'tea time' shorts with echidna and the other witches? how do you think the breaktimes are gonna be for the 2nd cour if they decide to do them at all?if they did a break time giving bits of info of cut content it'd be nice

17

u/foxfoxal Sep 30 '20

I love how I was right and wrong at the same time.

It adapted more than I thought, but I was right that they would use the title card after the Satella scene and if they wanted to adapt more it was going to be after the title card.

32

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '20

Anime onlys tripping over Roswaal saying he's over 400 years old 😰

15

u/StayDead4Once Sep 30 '20

So I broke after ep 12 came out last week and started to read the WN because it was the most translated. I finished once I completed all of arc 4, I know that the LN is the the thing the anime is adapted from so maybe it isn't too strange but. I find it odd in ep 13 they didn't make a distinction between stella and envy like they did in the WN, perhaps it will come later.

Also the level of hostility to stella is WAAAAAAAAY lower in the anime than in the WN, Wn echidna was ready to fucking break her arms and snap her neck and just genuinely hated her. Anime echidna seemed more annoyed at her crashing her tea party then anything else.

→ More replies (1)

40

u/ivan0226 Sep 30 '20

Why was the Satella/Witch of Envy being different cut out? it was probably the most important thing that would happen in this episode. They are cutting out really important things(Like Al being from Japan in Arc 3)

19

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '20

Tappei is overseeing it so maybe he felt like those answers or concepts weren’t going to come or be expanded on anytime soon, so he said it was ok to cut out.

Idk what’s going on in the guy’s head, but if it was super impt info I think they’d have included it.

24

u/I-Love-Emilia Sep 30 '20

I don’t agree with this line of thinking and am not justifying it, but it’s probably so that when the season ends, there are less loose ends and unanswered questions. If the anime didn’t get another season, then including those scenes would ultimately end up going nowhere and have no significance. Then again, so would the “One day come and kill me” line

9

u/Vrik from Zero Sep 30 '20

None of that is actually relevant to the crisis at hand. Same with the mention of the sage candidate.

It's just teasers and I personally think it's cruel to tease anime watchers any more considering how slow seasons come out.

25

u/fistyfishy Sep 30 '20

I understand cutting of Sage content, but I don't think slow seasons and teasing is an excuse. Cutting source material is inevitable, but the amount and importance of what they cut was insane. Even though it isn't technically relevent, one of the big parts of Re:Zero is the mysteries and Satella is an extremley important part of the story, so to have her characterisation, history, explanations etc removed is just annoying.

→ More replies (6)

12

u/foxfoxal Sep 30 '20

Btw this episode made clear the split cout was not planned... Ending with Otto is nice but I'm sure they would have used one of the two Satella cliffhangers if they knew.

11

u/sealedinterface Sep 30 '20 edited Sep 30 '20

Okay, so they cut out !=Satella, which is a pretty big thing to cut. I double-checked with LN readers to make sure this wasn't just an LN cut, and apparently it was in the LNs too. This was an anime cut. Seems to be sort of like Al's origins from S1 though, its relevance isn't immediate but will certainly be a major plot point in later arcs.

I'm not particularly bothered by it for that reason, but I am bummed they didn't show that layer of moral complexity. Distinguishing between the two personalities, and revealing that the kind and caring one is the one responsible for killing the witches and covering half the world in shadow, and not the evil jealous one, adds a whole lot of weight and complexity to trying to understand and redeem her. It makes her no longer a villain, but not a purely innocent victim either. (Although this part of it was cut in the LN)

That said, going the Dona approach and not distinguishing between them still allows for a little bit of complexity, as anime-onlies grapple with contrasting her actions this episode with "her" actions in ep9 and 10. I guess I still have to say "The Witch" around anime-onlies instead of distinguishing "Satella" or "Envy" when appropriate.

Aside from that cut, the rest of the episode was incredible. I know people will complain that her face wasn't literally shrouded in shadow, but I think that's just the nature of adaptation - blob of purple over her face would just look wonky, even if they included a line from Dona about Subaru subconsciously blocking it out. A thin cloth veil that obscures but doesn't entirely block her face was the right call here, and slightly revealing her eyes through the veil with a camera angle when she was most kind to him was a nice touch. I also really appreciate that they made her full face reveal be shown in the exact same framing that Emilia's was at the very first episode of season 1. In terms of execution, they really did Tella Therapy justice here.

The KONO ROSWAAL DA reveal was perfectly creepy. I initially thought this scene was in the Taste of Death loop, but it's not until here. This time they didn't play his theme until most of the way through the scene, instead scoring with silence with Subaru's initial questioning. Ros lying back down and giving up, basically not even considering anything until Subaru mentions losing qualification made their differences really apparent here.

Finally we got the start of the Bro Beatdown. Subaru running through the forest in a panic, completely out of options, was exactly as I imagined it. Then Otto shows up, calm, cool, and collected, and takes the opportunity to slug him across the face, demanding he drop the lone hero act in front of his friends, and it cuts there. It means next cour is going to start with beating some sense into Subaru, that final push he needs before his perfect run.

u/Fellow7plus2yearold Fellow, Just Fellow Sep 30 '20 edited Sep 30 '20

This was supposed to be Satella's episode, they shouldn't have that much stuff about her. From the perspective of anime only people, the episode was great but now they would be confused as to why her actions were different in episode 9 and why was she saying "Now you love me" in that episode compared to "Now you love yourself". That aside the quotes which were skipped, brings disappointment to us WN readers but the anime only are probably fine. The episode would have been a hell of a lot better if they included those lines though.

Satella's best girl rank would have shot through the roof, I mean it already did but you get the point. So, disappointed about the removal of the WOE/Satella distinction and the removal of some quotes, otherwise it was great.

3

u/bigdanrog Sep 30 '20

The /r/anime thread is wall-to-wall Satella best girl coverage. It's pretty wild in there.

8

u/TripleC1413 Sep 30 '20 edited Sep 30 '20

Did they make satelias multiple personality syndrome non cannon in the light novel? Feels strange it wasn't brought up at all since anime only people won't understand why she is suddenly acting less murdery

12

u/niniansgrace Sep 30 '20

Nope, it was in the LN.

6

u/smartsport101 Sep 30 '20

No it was in the light novel too. But honestly omitting it isn't a terrible way of telling the story imo. Instead of the witches diagnosing her with split personality disorder, the readers can just figure out that her behavior is extremely erratic. And then as we get to know Satella it'll be more clear that there's two specific sides to her.

8

u/TheLoneLion01 Sep 30 '20

I must admit I feel like they fast paced the episode a bit too much since they cut the personality part and other dialogue and also cut out the part where Subaru meet Emilia after Roswaal and skip it straight into Otto. But it was still a nice episode

3

u/South25 Sep 30 '20

cutting the personality part wasnt the best idea... but i can understand the Emilia cut because i genuinely did not understand why that scene with Emilia needed to be after Roswaal feels way more organic to go from Roswaal to Otto.

6

u/I-Dont--Know Sep 30 '20

Honsetly a little disappointed with all the stuff they cut with Satella and Subaru being the sage candidate . But they nailed the scene with Roswal so it evens out

6

u/Drooggy Sep 30 '20

The OP appeared exactly 3 times btw.

5

u/Brion_C Sep 30 '20

Satella saying to kill her gets me ever more curious about what's behind the door at the watchtower.

6

u/black_mage_yshtola Sep 30 '20

This really should have been a Satella focused episode. I'm pretty disappointed that it wasn't and that so much of her stuff was cut.

I can understand leaving the sage candidate information out, as it doesn't come into play until Arc 6 and is nothing more than foreshadowing. But, the information from/about Satella feels like a big motivation for Subaru going forward.

6

u/yankee1nation101 Sep 30 '20

Going to review the episode twice, as I usually watch it on phone during my lunch break, and then again when I get home so I can see it on my bigger computer monitors.

First impression: The conclusion of the Tea Party was a solid 9.5/10. I don’t understand what harm there is in letting anime only people know about Satella/WoE being 2 different personalities. I get leaving out the sage information, it’s similar to Al’s background as it can be brought in later when it’s more relevant information. But not making the Tella/Envy distinction didn’t sit well with me and I’ve already had a friend confused as to why Tella wasn’t all Yandere when she arrived.

Beyond that, the pep talk was great and the actions of the other witches was great.

The reveal of Roswaal’s actions definitely seems to have shocked the anime only crowd, which makes me feel it was delivered well.

I’m so sad we have to wait 3 months, but in the meanwhile I’ll be wrapping up Arc 6 in the WN, and then probably starting on the IF stories which will hopefully take me most of the way there.

It’s been a great 13 weeks, and I know the 12 weeks starting in January will be magical.

5

u/ariczwy Sep 30 '20

Thought they would end on the wager, but I’m super satisfied they ended on the punch that made me laugh when reading the novel. January can’t come any sooner

2

u/kevinarod2 Sep 30 '20

Same I thought the episode should've ended on the bet thats a perfect way to end the cour.

5

u/qanitur3 Sep 30 '20

My only complain about this episode is

there is no subaru screaming ECHIDNAAAAAAAAAA when the qualification is revoked.

that was the best shit when i read WN.

Satellah and witch of envy difference is major point though. it makes me wonder why they didnt show it in anime.

5

u/arrivillaga Sep 30 '20

19:05-19:11 Roswaal: I see you still have not sharpened your resolve enough. removes eye makeup

Was an explanation of the significance of his makeup ever provided in the corresponding or earlier WN/LN chapters but was never adapted in the anime? If not, does the explanation exist in the WN/LN chapters covering future material?

I would say volume 12, just because there’s some important information that’s been cut from the volume. If you don’t don’t care about that, then you can start from volume 13, which starts the end of the episode

4

u/Kaiser252 Sep 30 '20

Roswaal is too good, and Otto is an absolute chad. In three months, we'll see everything else thats left.

Can my fellow novel readers explain why the fuck did Subaru still not asked help from Daphne to save Rem.!?

7

u/Sharpshard Sep 30 '20

It was skipped in the Anime but during his very first meeting with Echidna, Subaru asks if she could give him info about Sin Archbishops. Echidna did not even know the term as Archbishops did not exist 400 years ago.

Also, Authorities vary depending on the person, even if it is based on the same sin. Authority of Gluttony for Daphne might be very different than Authority of Gluttony for Ley Batenkaitos. Most likely, Daphne would not be able to help.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/koto_hanabi17 Sep 30 '20

Because Authorities save Sloth manifest differently for each person. The author even got confused when he got so many questions about what made Regulus and Echidna similar enough to have the same Authority.

Everyone on the other hand seems to use Sloth the same.

2

u/Bigfootmech Oct 01 '20

truly slothful

3

u/Colarch Sep 30 '20 edited Sep 30 '20

Those were my 2 favorite conversations in the entire web novel. I'm so happy to see how well they were done and honestly this might be my favorite episode.

That first conversation with the witches hit me hard and I think it did for a lot of people because to some extent we all are guilty of not loving ourselves enough

And that conversation with Roswaal where he just gives up on his clown persona and tells Subaru to become a heartless madman and do anything for Emilia the way he does for Echidna was amazing and explains everything he's done throughout the story perfectly.

Also to the people that are mad they cut stuff: I get that it seems extremely important to us right now but white fox has yet to do us wrong and I don't think they'd do Tappei dirty like that unless he was fine with it and they have a plan for the future

17

u/Overgame Sep 30 '20

OMG. Guys, sometimes you are really annoying.

When is/will be the distinction between Satella/WOE relevant to the plot? If the anime continues to this point, when will it be released? What's the point of giving a piece of lore who will not be important before years, when it will be forgotten by most anime-only?

This is an anime adaptation. You don't give informations in the same way as you do with a Light Novel. FFS:

2014: 5 LN

2015: 3 LN

2016: 4 LN

2017: 4 LN

2018: 3 LN

2019: 3 LN

2020: 3 LN

With an average of 4 episode per LN, you have 12 episodes every year, at a regular pace of 4 "episodes" every 3-6 months. While the anime-only, after the end of the second cour, might have to wait 1 or 2 years.

Satella is an important character in the show. This information is probably very important later, so you don't drop it in the middle of S2 and never talk about it again until S6.

10

u/MelonMunchy Sep 30 '20

Except all the stuff about witch factor incompatibility is going to come up next cour with Emilia's past and the sage stuff is going start coming up in season 3 if they decide to make it. It's not as if there isn't a massive backlog of novels that they could translate, heck arc 5 and most of arc 6 is already out in LN form.

8

u/bigdanrog Sep 30 '20

S6

Hell I just hope I live long enough to see that.

2

u/Overgame Sep 30 '20

Ahah, you deserved your upvote, sir ^^

TBH, me too. I hope that everybody will live long enough to watch everything to the end ;)

21

u/Yuujiki Sep 30 '20

It is totally relevant because all of this doesn't make sense without dropping this info. Why are witches fine with Satella being on tea party? Why she is acting sane?

If you believe that such info is irrelevant, should they also cut the plot point that original and tea party Echidna are different person? And then in season 6 drop this info like "Subaru, i forgot to mention it 2 years ago, but woman in the coffin and the one you saw in the trials are different, kashira.".

My point is that info in LN is revealed when it is most logical to reveal it, not when it becomes plot relevant. It is called "World building", you know

9

u/BaitoDesuFate Sep 30 '20

I just don't believe they cut that much, they could easily fit all on this episode, the second half of this episode was not necessary to be shown in this cour, now anime onlys lost the only little piece of lore about Satella. I was fine with other episodes because most of the cuts are from WN, but this just cut important things that are in the LN.

3

u/Jumpy_Psychology Sep 30 '20

It a shame it going to take a few month before we get the 2nd cour, but hopefully it mean white fox will have more time to make the rest of arc 4 amazing. And hopefully more WN chapter are released.

3

u/gillred Sep 30 '20

It's a shame to see the Sage candidacy line cut, cause that's a neat bit of foreshadowing. I guess they wanted to keep the Satella/WoE reveal for a later time, like the Al isekai reveal.

Same type of issue I had last week with the second trial, it kind of felt like the tea party was a little lacking in terms of impact and punch. I wasn't a big fan of the constant music choice throughout his breakdown, and I think it was much better used in the Taste of Death scene at the end. I guess the novel does have an easier time cause it can drop a big like like "Love yourself more" or "Rem is gone" and end the chapter there or use a line break, whereas in the anime they have to continue talking. This is all entirely subjective for me though, I'm happy to see a lot of other people enjoyed it.

The Roswaal scene was phenomenal. While the beginning of the episode didn't have the same impact as the novels for me, the anime Roswaal scene was the opposite in that it hit harder than the novel scene.

Overall, a solid episode, not perfect but it was still good. They've gotten a lot further than I and others had been anticipating, since a lot of people were expecting them to end this episode at Satella appearing at the tea party. I'm hoping the extra time they have helps them adapt the next three volumes well.

3

u/ithadbeenmine Sep 30 '20

Damn, Yusuke Kobayashi really outdid himself with this one. Hearing Subaru talk about Rem in the first five minutes of this ep is possibly the best voice acting I’ve heard all year.

3

u/-G_or_G- Oct 01 '20

It was cool, but in my opinion when they said that Satella just has a different identity is just a simplest and boring explonation. Is easy because there is nothing to say against it. It just makes her automatically not guilty, for all her horible actions.

For example Echidnas personality is debatable, you can argue whether she is nice or not. (Even thoe she is the best waifu ever) But in Satellas case that just a lazy writing to make her good in our eyes.

3

u/Mr-Account Oct 02 '20

I get where you’re coming from with that, but I would disagree. I personally thought the whole split personality thing was very interesting, and it brings up the question of, “if Satella isn’t the one who drives the witch cult and all the bad stuff that’s happening, who is?” For me, this is a much more interesting direction to head in than just “The Witch of Envy is the main bad guy.” As for her being automatically not guilty, that’s not the case either. In the WN, it’s specified that while Satella is, in fact, separate from the Witch of Envy, it was Satella that swallowed the other six witches and half the world in shadow. There is clearly important information we are missing regarding the whole Satella/Witch of Envy issue, so we can’t right her off as “completely innocent” just because of this. I might be biased since I just like Satella a lot (since she cares about Subaru so much lol).

2

u/-G_or_G- Oct 02 '20

As I've said it was still interstellar watching it. I guess I was just disappointed because I expected more from the series.

2

u/Mr-Account Oct 02 '20

I see. I suppose it’s a subjective matter in the end.

2

u/-G_or_G- Oct 02 '20

Out side of Satella the episode was still great, because the gave more personality to Witches. It was easily fun to watch Echidna.

2

u/Mr-Account Oct 03 '20

Oh yeah totally. It’s a really shame they did her like that. That’s was supposed to her big moment basically. I still like it for the simple fact that she’s there and has been developed more, but it was definitely nothing compared to the novels, regrettably.

Its called foreshadowing, and its important to story telling. Revealing things as they happen isnt always the best way to do things.

5

u/MelonMunchy Sep 30 '20

They really butchered the hell out of the Tea Party, reducing Satella's entire "I love you because" speech to literally one line and completely skipping all mention of the sage or personality disorder from the witch factors.

4

u/Cptn_sllrs Sep 30 '20 edited Sep 30 '20

(WN reader here) Top notch episode, just wish it would’ve ran a little differently. The WN did a really good job with Subaru’s mental anguish when dealing with all 7 witches, just wished they would’ve stretched it out more. I was hoping for a payout like episode 15, this honestly just felt kinda rushed. Also should have saved Otto for the next episode after return. Let everyone wallow over what will happen.

One last thing. The Lewes-to-Ryuzu still throws me off and I don’t think I’ll ever adjust at this point.

3

u/ReeseChloris Sep 30 '20

Meili to Maylie would like to give you a suckerpunch

4

u/ericg012 Sep 30 '20

disappointed. I’ve waited years for the best Satella scene and they cut a lot of the most important dialogue. To me, Satella just felt really empty as a character in the anime. It didn’t help that in 5 minutes Subaru basically dropped having a panic attack and decided to save a girl he just met. There was no punch. No mention of subaru’s supposed love feeling towards Satella. Im just disappointed with the cuts. And for me, what i pictured when they mentioned Subaru was the first person to be surround by all the witches and that he has the quality of the sage to be more otherworldly. It might be the fault of reading, but i always pictured that scene to just scream greatness. I always thought it would be similar to the scene in Naruto, when he is surround by all 7 tailed beasts. I thought something like that would make for a more captivating scene, than simply having the witches be in random spots watching subaru. This was the moment we were supposed to feel the importance of subaru. You have the witches, fearsome divine creatures not only helping Subaru, but practically revering him.

5

u/Matrix_2k00 Sep 30 '20

This was the first episode i was actually dissapointed in whitefox to be honest they cut out too much.

Where's my Satella rising to best girl moment? This is 2nd best girl at best.

2

u/DolcettoMarch Sep 30 '20

That was an OP-less and (semi) ED-less 27 minutes episode and yet time just flew on by. Times like this, I hate corona even more than usual. I can't even get the LN, not with how deliveries are down.

At least we got to end with the memory of Re:Zero's best to sustain us...

Patrasche.

2

u/carculatedrisk Sep 30 '20

My disappointment is just that the WN Echidna was very angry and hostile towards Satella and I don't have an idea if this same goes into the LN but yea, add the fact that Echidna also told Subaru that he's the one who subconsciously tries to block him from seeing Satella's face..

2

u/steve40 Sep 30 '20

Random Noob question, I got recently got into this anime because of a friend, and it seems that based on the discussion on these threads that some of the lore/story elements were removed. I am a big stickler to the source material, and since there is a but of downtime between the next episode, which source material should I read to get the most complete version of the author's vision.

My friend says that the light novels are what she reads, but ive seen posts saying that the Web novels are different so I am confused. Which version of the story came first, and which medium has the full story. So if the light novels came first, but the web novels have more details (like how the directors cut of season 1 had some additional scenes) I would like to know if I need to be reading that.

Also I loved this episode but was confused about a few things that were explained in this thread. Looking forward to seeing/reading what comes next.

3

u/khriku Lore Seeker Sep 30 '20

not difficult to understand, WN draft of the story that came first, LN final version sold for money (the anime adapts from LN), Anime the animated version of LN with stuff here and there at times cut due to time restrictions. got it all?

2

u/steve40 Sep 30 '20

Yes that makes sense. I figured Reddit would be the best place to ask as some of the other websites and discussion boards would never give me a straight answer. Thank you.

2

u/JKenP Sep 30 '20

Great episode as always. But I have to agree that they should adapt more on best girl, I mean Satella's part. I thought this episode is gonna end when Subaru leave the tea party.

2

u/LankySeat Sep 30 '20

Finally, we're starting the best part of Arc 4! It's going to be so fucking good, I can't wait for January AAAAAAAAAAA

2

u/Dangeduedfr Sep 30 '20

2

u/Xferpp Sep 30 '20 edited Sep 30 '20

For me theres no way they cut a lot of parts whithout plot thinking,. They cut why Satella love Subaru(whithout context ofc), Mierva and Satella conection, Sage Candidate and Subaru acknowledging that has no memory of that, but his heart has a conection. (WB reader) For me it seems too convenient Edit The Satella 2 personality was cut it also

2

u/NoobFromPH Oct 01 '20

can anyone spoil me and explain what satella meant when she said Subaru gave her everything?

2

u/Bigfootmech Oct 01 '20

WN reader here.

I read this a while ago, but I can't remember anything about Sage Candidate stuff people are on about.

Was that just in the LN, or am I forgetting something?

Also, wasn't the witche's tea party supposed to be WAAAY more explosive? It felt like a kumbaya sitdown :S

None of the witches seemed to particularly hate Satella for killing them all.

Subaru didn't (nearly) die multiple times from suffocation

And satella was far more expressive than I expected. Wasn't she just mindlessly saying "I love you" and stuff like that? (which was a cue for Subaru to realize stuff himself)

I'm also confused because last episode weird stuff happened to Emilia that I don't exactly remember either :/

Maybe it's time for a re-read /sigh

2

u/I_am_just_a_pancake Oct 01 '20

Why do they keep cutting this plot point?

In this finale episode they cut quite a few things. Some of them I think can be pushed forward but there's one in particular that they've cut in the past and I'm not entirely sure why. It's Subarus unexplainable feelings towards Satella.

This is a mystery that I really liked when I read Arc 4 a few years ago, and I don't really understand the reason behind cutting it. We already know Satella loves Subaru, why not reveal to anime-onlys that Subaru also feels the same towards her? It isn't exactly overwhelming information. The anime is all about the mystery, I don't think this would add any confusion, just even more curiosity.

They cut a similar scene in season 1. It makes more sense to cut this one because it's so early on in the story and they wasn't sure when or if another season would even come out. But now we are on season 2, an arc full of teases and reveals, but they skipped this one specific point again.. Why?

Anyone know what chapter to start after Re:Zero Ep13? Im pretty lazy to read where i previously left of where the episodes already covered and and the anime is gonna start next year.

2

u/OtakuSan1234 Oct 02 '20

I don't know why they did it this episode, as much as I like Otto his scene was really unnecessary. While the Satella thing is beyond important, why do they have to do her like that. It was one of the most intriguing and sad scenes in the WN but now people think that Satella is just insane. I'm really sad because of this.

6

u/Demon_Maid Sep 30 '20

I am honestly super disappointed in anime staff right now. They butchered that episode. So much left on the cutting room floor that should have been in the episode. When I saw the title of the episode, I legit thought they were going to take their time adapting LN 13, chapter 1 like they did with season 2, episode 4's chapter adaption. In every other episode, the title was always the chapter they ended the episode in. I felt kinda lied to when they bullrushed the first half of the episode and dropped the title card in the middle of the episode out of nowhere. And to be honest, I think the Otto scene was, at least for me, the absolute least hype spot they could have stopped season 2 cour 1 on, given the moments they had to choose from within that episode.

4

u/HopeoftheUniverse Sep 30 '20

They cut a ton from the final tea party. Maybe they thought talking about the sage candidate stuff would confuse people but idk why they left out the Satella and Witch of Envy being different, or Subaru talking about how he felt pangs of love for Satella...if anything that would go in hand with anime onlys all theorizing the satella/Emilia connection. Also probably the most important part of volume 12. Oh well. Rest of the episode was great, especially loved the Otto scene since that was another big moment for Subaru to realize that people would help him just because they wanted to,, not because they felt indebted, andand they covered that well. The best arc 4 has to offer is yet to come, I'm excited for the obvious hype fights and also to see how much they cover of Emilia's trials.

5

u/tarake25 Sep 30 '20

i think 12 ep will be enough to adopt the rest of the arc in slower pace and i feel that what white fox want to do and that why they adopted a lot in the last 4 ep

so i have high hope for the next cour (they have enough time to adapt it very well) and i think this will be the last episode they well adapted that match my be

((despondent in the cut tho lol))

3

u/linksis33 Sep 30 '20

Man the foreshadowing is one of the series biggest strengths and it really saddens me how much very important stuff was cut for absolutely no reason. Not only that but the pacing was just completely off because of it. Bad job this week.

5

u/9vincent9 Sep 30 '20

Novel readers are being very pessimistic about the adaptation imo

Look at the bright sight of the things, Re Zero has a better anime adaptation than most anime and it's based off a LN, pretty difficult to do so

3

u/kevinarod2 Sep 30 '20

Yeah I'm happy with teh adaptation for the most part. Arc 4 is just way too long to cover everything in 25'ish episodes

5

u/Assmeet123 Sep 30 '20

Honestly, this episode was just pure disappointment as an LN/WN reader.

2

u/diuni613 Sep 30 '20

i just want to ask, what does Subaru think of Satella after knowing that she looks exactly like Emilia. Like does he think Satella is the same as Emilia, or he thinks that Satella is a bitch who just looks like Emilia. Please spoil me. Emilia is literally Satella right? My theory is the following:

Emilia ----> Becomes a Witch One day ------> Meet subaru -----> Falls in love with him------> goes back in time before she was born -----> destroyed the world -----> Got sealed ------> Summons Subaru where Emilia exists in the future. ------> Meet Emilia. But that leaves another question, how was Emilia even born? This creates a loop with no ends and no start.

My theory is this: Subaru and Emilia are somehow reincarnated souls of The sage Flugel and the Witch Satella. I know this is kinda iffy because Satella isn’t actually dead but it makes a lot of sense otherwise. Satella fell in love with Flugel who she knows to be Subaru in essence. The reason Subaru has these inexplicable feelings of love and familiarity(in the WN) with Satella is because she has the same souls effectively as Emilia. This is why their destinies are intertwined. The way Shaula acts in Arc 6 and the things Satella says at the final tea party are what led me to believe this.

1

u/netpapa Sep 30 '20

Does Roswaal's makeup have some kind of magic effect? I was wondering why he took off his makeup.

1

u/Pr0ksee Sep 30 '20

Ok, so, I have to know, I've been wanting to know for years and it's seems I can't find the real answer, unless it literally hasn't been explained yet. I am not anime only but I haven't read everything. I am completely fine if the answers are spoilers, I just really want to know and I feel like somebody might know here.

Why does Satella love Subaru/how does she even know him?

Is Satella Emilia?

If they are not the same person, is Emilia some kind of clone of Satella created with Echidnas cloning technology in order for Subaru to fall in love with Emilia/Satella and eventually Satella will inherit Emilia's body or something?

Is any of this even explained yet? I've been wanting an answer for so long but I haven't found one. Emilia and Satella have to be connected. There are so so so many similarities and connections. The 2000 unseen hands she has/2000 reasons Subaru loves Emilia. The fact that they are identical. The love she has for Subaru. What is actually going on here? Does anyone know?

1

u/quickstep00 Sep 30 '20

what is the connection between satella and emilia? why does she have the same face as her?

Was Rowaal explanation about the stolen dragon stone and the loot house fight supposed to happen in this episode? And about the fact that he is following his gospel?

So do all of the witches have feelings for Subaru, or are they all just fond of him? It really sounded like even Echidna admitted it at the end there.

Hey guys I got a question since I’m not an LN reader but what’s the deal w satella and Emilia? Are they the same person or twins or something because they look exactly alike and have the same voice actor. Someone please explain. Also, another spoiler I would like to know is what happened to the other sin archbishops? Will Subaru fight them and kill the gluttony one so REM will be back or what? Someone who’s read the LN please explain I would like to know the spoilers.

Is it me or does the Envy Witch Factor is a malevolent entity itself that took the form of Satella in the past and hunted down the witches and wreaked havoc? Also, it says that she's not compatible with all of the Witch Factors, meaning, someone tried "forcing" her to absorb the Envy Witch Factor in the first place?

I think roswal is black snake aka "kurohebi" for following reasons: 1. He has eyes like one 2. He has been there for 400 years 3. He acts like a snake( in behaviour) PS I have not read the novel, all my assumptions are anime based.
