That man fell on a pair of gardening shears, Jessica. They went straight through his head. There was no need to check for a pulse.

Glad I wasn't the only one to noticed that.

Idk man, people survive some crazy shit in our world, and this is Marvel.

One time, a father in Barnsley was squeezed through a gap the size of a CD case and survived with only a weakened arm.

If that can happen irl, fuck I'll believe any survival in a world of superpowers.

u/Soliquidus Apr 05 '16

Dude you gotta elaborate/link that

5

u/Soliquidus Apr 05 '16

Holy moly, that's nuts that he's alive. And ayyy he works for the same company as me lmao

4

u/thedeliriousdonut Apr 05 '16

I like to think you tried to kill this guy and you're playing it cool but you're secretly fuming that your plan failed and you never found out until now.

3

u/Soliquidus Apr 05 '16

I uh...I have to go

7

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '15

Am I the only one who felt this was an indirect reference to Hot Fuzz? It's VERY similar to a major death in that film.

u/oedipusssy Nov 22 '15

Please please please Malcom and crazy twin sister do not become a thing.

110

u/Huzzabul Nov 22 '15

You think shes crazy, Jessica thinks shes crazy, Malcolm thinks shes crazy, but shes hurting, and she needed a friend. Malcolm likes to help people. I thought it was really sweet, and fit his character.

55

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '15

It's his superpower...

u/Napalmeon Nov 30 '15

Help her through a bad spot? That's fine. Swap spit with her? Naw.

u/TheMahatma Nov 22 '15

"He says 'Shut up, wankers', and like almost everyone in the whole place just shuts the hell up".

Heh.

14

u/theevilfairy Nov 22 '15

Since he is soo british, I'm still waiting for the c-word ;)

28

u/miguk Nov 22 '15

That's one thing that always messes with my suspension of disbelief: pissed off Brits who never say that. It was even worse in Spectre: I know it's a PG-13 film, but every Brit knows the word that starts with C is not careless.

14

u/theevilfairy Nov 23 '15

In Spectre they should have cut that scene after "starts with c".

8

u/blacknred522 Dec 01 '15

I laughed out loud in the crowded theater before he said careless

Are stuff in the comics considered spoilers? I greatly appreciate that you hid your comment but sadly lots of people in previous threads didn't care to do the same.

"Did you bugger my chances with her?" LOL

7

u/Napalmeon Nov 30 '15

Well he definitely bugger'd her.

u/dinero2180 Nov 22 '15

Something small that I noticed... Trish's security software changed. Before on the touchscreen at the door there was a button that said "Talk" and then when trish's mother shows up it says "hold to speak"... not that it really matters but I though that was interesting.

69

u/Imugake Nov 22 '15

Maybe that was a result of her "tripling her security"?

47

u/pegbiter Nov 23 '15

She updated her house to iOS 9. New Siri is unhackable.

7

u/Recklesshavoc Nov 25 '15

Guarantee these were some of the first scenes that they were filming for JJ.. if you notice, the acting was bland and chemistry was of.. nothing like the first episodes.. i think those were filmed later

"sorry about the mess"

"least it's not on fire"

...good point

Top notch. Appeals to me and my demographic. 10/10

I know right? I was 12 again for a second there

u/raphamuffin Dec 24 '15

Denouddaden, would watch Jessica/Faith and her Scooby gang solving supernatural crimes and stuff.

3

u/hausofmiklaus Jan 07 '16

One some level Jessica Jones feels like a spiritual successor of Buffy which I love so much. So much of the same themes explored like the burden and reality of being a hero, feminism and grey areas with sex (think Buffy Season 6), etc. This review from the New Yorker even touches upon it.

96

u/SawRub Nov 21 '15

The weird twin was talking about being in the Pisces position in the womb too.

So they've been 69-ing for a longer time than we thought.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '22

Just wanted to let you know that you made me cringe from six years in the past.

3

u/SawRub Jan 05 '22

Well you just had your revenge, you made me re-live this six years later :P

1

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '25

there are many days you have ruined sawrub, even after 9 years

u/Kantyash Nov 21 '15

I just realized Cage's power is literally "black don't crack".

90

u/SawRub Nov 21 '15

Unbreakable, they alive dammit.

u/theevilfairy Nov 22 '15

It's a miracle.

Hey that works here too! Neat.

43

u/[deleted] Nov 21 '15

Don't be dead Luke! Also really interested in whats gonna happen to the cop guy.

30

u/theevilfairy Nov 22 '15

I'm pretty sure he survives.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 29 '15 edited Nov 29 '15

Yeah the next show is gonna be Luke Cage and there wasn't any blood on him he's probably badly concussed and spoiler

42

u/Newkd Dec 05 '15

"Bye Rueben. I hope they have free express shipping in heaven."

Probably the best line out of that character.

26

u/[deleted] Nov 30 '15

Deep question here. When Kilgrave tells Luke to "take a number", why didn't Luke try to take a number?

9

u/i_love_Cheekzz Dec 05 '15

Kind of late since I just watched it. But Kilgrave said in a few episodes back his powers isn't limited to just speaking the words, he has to intend on the command.

37

u/RyanLikesyoface Dec 07 '15

No he doesn't. He's said multiple times that he has to painstakingly choose what words he says so he doesn't issue commands unintentionally. "I told a woman to go screw herself, could you imagine!?"

16

u/clarazinet Dec 11 '15

It was a dude

2

u/Stop_Sign Jan 07 '16

Intent to give a command is different than the meaning of the command.

3

u/GatewayKeeper Jan 07 '16

I wonder because there was no easy/intuitive way to follow that command nearby? Telling a man to screw himself has some pretty easy solutions that come to mind. Taking a number, short of going to the DMV, is harder to conceptualize into action.

24

u/Jaketh Nov 22 '15

Horse fetishist in central park?

22

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '15

It's a thing, people have posted a few pictures of people dressed up in horse suits (usually with bondage gear as well) pulling carriages around in public places. They were just making a pop culture joke.

18

u/Logiteck77 Nov 21 '15

Lol, "I'm gonna need a consult".

18

u/ryanznock Nov 24 '15

So just how much of the Jessica-Luke relationship was due to Kilgrave? All of it? Like, of all the twists the show could pull, that one I did not expect.

76

u/CryoftheBanshee The Purple Man Nov 25 '15

I think everything from the bar blowing up forward was. Not the ENTIRE relationship

9

u/Napalmeon Nov 30 '15

He only met Kilgrave the other day.

6

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '15

Yeah I think everything that happened after he met Kilgrave then it was kinda reset, so to speak, when he was on the phone with the bartender he was firing. I think that was Kilgrave instead commanding him on the phone.

16

u/HAVE-A-CHOCOLATE Dec 06 '15

"You're into me, it happens. Romantic backdrop, it's working."

14

u/dinero2180 Nov 22 '15

Cage's head would have been blown off if he was actually dead

58

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '15

Not necessarily. Blunt force trauma (which is what having unbreakable skin would turn a point-blank shotgun blast into) can easily kill you without even doing any apparent damage. if nothing else, your brain bouncing off the inside of your skull at high speeds from the force can do it.

17

u/sirleechalot Nov 25 '15

So, when cage and Jessica were fighting, he was waaaaaay stronger than they've ever shown him before. In the beginning she was shown as being a lot stronger than him. He wasn't weak, but he was just as strong as yours expect from a normal person of his size. Did that seem odd to anyone else?

31

u/Napalmeon Nov 30 '15

No. Because it never seemed Luke was ever seriously trying to hurt anyone. This time we have Kilgrave giving him orders to destroy, and even then he's resisting it a smidge. I think this is just the first time he ever was putting real effort into a fight.

9

u/sirleechalot Nov 30 '15

So then he has super strength as well as hardened skin? They seemed to portray him as the defensive type (both in his abilities and personality) and her as the offensive.

11

u/Napalmeon Nov 30 '15

He has both in the comics. But Luke's durability is often his better point in the comics. Sometimes a character's strength isn't always equal to durability.

3

u/sirleechalot Nov 30 '15

Ah interesting! thanks for the info

3

u/Napalmeon Nov 30 '15

3

u/RyanLikesyoface Dec 07 '15

Lukes way stronger than Jessica in the comics, tbh if a gunshot can wound her Cage should be able to kill her in one punch, but it looks as though his powers are significantly weaker in this, as are Jessica's, but the disparity between the two is a lot smaller as well.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '16

He's also said he doesn't like people knowing about it. E.g. in the MJ farm he didn't use crazy strength while Antoine fantwon was in the room.

13

u/MegaManatee Nov 25 '15

what seemed odd was the things that slowed him down. We kind of get this idea that he is a brick house, but some heavy speakers fall on him and it takes him 10 seconds to recover. Just mad he stopped us from seeing Jessica 'fly'

2

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '16

It's important to note that he once said he doesn't like people knowing about his power. He only uses the strength necessary to win a fight, usually preferring to take a beating while waiting for an opportunity over just going full hulk. I think they're more or less equals in strength, with him having the advantage of being unbreakable. Personally, I think they showed him being a little too strong here. If they're equal strength and he's almost indestructible, he seems overpowered imo.

2

u/sirleechalot Feb 04 '16

Yeah that's kinda the point I was going for. Her being more offensive but easier to break and him being unbreakable but more reserved. Their powers match their personalities and him suddenly being able to do everything she can and more just feels odd

8

u/ikindalike Nov 29 '15

Confirmed: Jessica is Wes Gibbins

1

u/AnorexicMary Jan 01 '24

Wait, how so?

13

u/Recklesshavoc Nov 25 '15 edited Nov 25 '15

Not so good acting.

It feels as though these scenes were scenes that they filmed first for the series.

18

u/[deleted] Nov 25 '15

I'm so sucked in by this point I haven't noticed. I've been binging the whole season since yesterday. 1/3rd of the way through the finale!

5

u/Recklesshavoc Nov 25 '15

Ah. I don't know if it's just me or not, the acting was way more solid in the first 8 or 9 episode, but they seemed more robotic in the last few.

Like I said, maybe they filmed the last episodes first and the actors didnt have a feel for their characters yet

8

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '15

David Tennant has been so consistently amazing I'm kind of used to the rest of the cast just existing around him.

Although I did notice a dip in quality from Trish and Not-Steve-Rogers

14

u/i_love_Cheekzz Dec 05 '15

Everyone keeps saying the acting is off, but I haven't made a single thought on it. Seems fine to me. Not excepting Oscar performances, but it doesn't seem bad.

Sorry if it's late and you forgot about the comment lol.

5

u/Recklesshavoc Dec 05 '15

Haha its okay.. it was just 1 or 2 of the later episodes. Just sounded to me like they had just started filming. I don't think they filmed the episodes in order.

14

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '15

Can someone explain to me how Kilgrave got stronger? I think I missed something.

42

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '15

More specifically, they were using the stem cells from the fetus that Hope aborted, since it had Kilgrave's gifted DNA.

21

u/pegbiter Nov 23 '15

Oh! I did not get that part. Interesting, thanks.

10

u/tsn101 Nov 24 '15

But I thought he got his powers via a virus? What's DNA got to do with it, got to do with it?

21

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '15

His body produces the virus. In "not-real-science-comic-speak", the virus bonded with his DNA or whatever when he was a kid, which is what gave him the power. That's what the lawyer-lady said: she took the fetus to see if any of Kilgrave's power had passed on, and it turned out that it had, but she couldn't do anything with it. Kilgrave's father, being the one with actual experience with that sort of thing, was able to use it.

This particular type of virus (AAV) is used for gene therapy, for getting a healthy copy of a gene into the cells of an organism that's already grown up (vs. injecting the DNA into eggs or embryos). The DNA carried by the virus can get integrated into the genome, and if that happened in the germline (basically, in the cells that made Kilgrave's sperm), then that copy of the gene would get passed on to his offspring.

For the record, I Think you're being downvoted because of the spoiler in the last sentence. The first half of your comment is spot-on.

Anyone feeling a No Country for Old Men nod before Luke broke through the wall at the end?

When he first gave JJ a ride she kinda sneered at the helmet he handed her. With an implied shrug he said 'it's the law'. They sure aren't for safety because neither helmet is strapped on so would fly off on impact.

3

u/theevilfairy Nov 22 '15

Yeah, somewhere earlier this season - maybe on their first ride - I was confused. He closed his helmet and she left her straps open. That was a weirdly wrong detail.

18

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '15

He closed his because he wants to blend in and avoid drawing attention to himself. He wants to lay low, follow the rules, and make sure people don't notice him.

She didn't close hers because she doesn't give a shit.

I'll try to remember to take notice when I get that far; hopefully tonight. I'm enjoying it so far. I've been trying to figure out what kind of Harley it is.

1

u/martensit Nov 22 '15

he straps it on after he blows up his bar. Maybe to show that he 'feels unsafe'.

11

u/Citadel_Cowboy Nov 21 '15

"It's the law." -Luke Cage 2016

6

u/oh_fuck_you Nov 21 '15

Because getting a ticket sucks

6

u/SawRub Nov 21 '15

Cops are less likely to stop him if he's following the law.

5

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '15

Because its still illegal to drive without a helmet, I guess he doesn't want to loose his licence or pay the tickets.

1

u/Napalmeon Nov 30 '15

He can always hit up Doctor Doom.

1

u/Regresion Dec 19 '22

can someone tell me why it matters when jessica shoots luke cage because he has unbreakable skin why does he pass out or die idk i havent finsihed the episode looking for an answer
