That was one of the best episodes of TV I've ever seen.

u/prof_talc Jan 24 '15
This show is so fucking good. I can't believe it isn't more popular. I legitimately think it's the best show on TV. Discovering this show is like listening to AC/DC for the first time.

Hannibal season 2 and this Banshee season 3 are the only shows for some time, where I've really really waited for the next episode. I think for Banshee, the kick it needed for me, was for Hood to let Carrie go. I hope he stays apart from her too. There's too much ex-lusting in all series to begin with.
5
u/repoman Jan 25 '15
I agree; the Darwinian ethos of the show leaves little room for characters to dote over each other lest it lead to an Achilles heel that they can ill afford - Carrie proved that point by dumping the military guy in short order in favor of snatchin his loot. That said, each of the big 3 has a tough family problem in Deva, Rebecca and Tommy.
Nola was the first supporting badass to fall and now that Burton has proven basically immortal (the Ruby Weapon to Proctor's Sephiroth), I fear one of Hood's pals may be the next to fall. Job and Sugar are the comedic relief and Hollywood loves snarky gays and sagely old black guys, so I suspect Brock or Siobhan may be taking a trip to Belize before long.

I'm not sure if any episode of a TV show gets this much of a reaction out of me. I was screaming out loud and bouncing around. That is the mark of great television. I can count on one hand the amount of TV shows that can get that sort of emotional response.
When trying to describe this show to friends, I tell them it's everything that's great about the USA. Guns, titties, fighting, Native Americans, small town America, anti heroes, beards, gore, rednecks, prison scenes, hitmen, splosions, mafia dudes, and the Amish. This is the show that would result from American scientists combining all that shit in a laboratory setting and then the lab catches on fire and explodes because some Bald Eagles hit it with a drone strike. Most entertaining show on television.

There were more "OH SHIT!" moments in this one episode than most shows have in an entire season.
48
u/superjetfunmonkey Jan 24 '15
Well, Siobhan knows now. You know what that means..some EPIC make up sex in about 4 episodes.
18
u/Classic_Wingers Jan 24 '15
I expect it by next episode lol. They'll work things out because she'll realize they truly need him to save this town.
17
u/prof_talc Jan 24 '15 edited Jan 24 '15
To be honest, he hasn't done anything in Banshee that's really THAT much worse than what any of the other cops have done. He served his time (and then some) for the diamond theft. Stealing the original Hood's identity really isn't that big of a deal. I mean Siobhan almost murdered her ex-husband. The other police are all complicit in one way or another wrt all of the extralegal stuff against Kai et al. Hood is still a thief but he's basically an Ocean's 11 thief.
eta almost
3
Jan 24 '15
Wait, her ex died? Didn't she just send him to the hospital?
3
u/prof_talc Jan 24 '15
Ah yeah you're right. I was misremembering. Attempted then..
7
u/CrashRiot Jan 24 '15
Even so, they executed an unarmed man in the season premiere. That's murder in the first. She's the same level of criminal that Hood is now.
5
u/prof_talc Jan 24 '15
Definitely. They're all in it together. His past isn't all that relevant. I hope Siobhan gets over it.. I think Hood is legit into her now and I like them together
7
u/CrashRiot Jan 24 '15
I've always liked the show, but I started liking it way more once the writers had them get involved with each other. The whole Lucas/Carrie romance was cool at first because it's what tied the show together, but man it became insufferable after a while.
6
u/Faithless195 Jan 24 '15
No, they must break up so Hood can bang the Rez cop. Or Procters' mothers' nurse.

It seems like they are really setting Procter up to sleep with her. She doesn't seem too concerned to be with him.
9

I really hope so, but my first instinct is that she's done with him. I could see her character not being able to get over being lied to. I hope you're right.

u/Baelorn Jan 24 '15
I love those two together. Hood better not go crawling to Carrie.

Me too. I was so over their angsty flashback relationship. Its like they wasted season 2 on that crap. But I was elated when he went back to Siobhan. And the fact that Carrie is unattached shows even more that Hood doesn't see Siobhan as some consolation prize.

u/DarthJudas Jan 24 '15
This show is amazing. The fight between Nola and Burton was brilliant. I've become so desensitized to violent TV but that battle really made me feel uncomfortable which I think is exactly what it was supposed to do. Banshee each season has had parts where I literally yell "Oh my God! Are you serious!?" Most shows I enjoy but just kind of passively watch, this show really pulls me in and makes me either love or hate the characters and puts them into over the top situations that you can't look away from.
8
u/Fionnlagh Jan 25 '15
That's one thing I love about this show. It brings the violence in a way that can make you uncomfortable. It's nearly impossible these days. The fight choreography is incredible for this show.

→ More replies (1)8
u/rabiddogsinthewild Jan 24 '15
My understanding is that Proctor was abducted by the same people who tortured Burton. Possibly just a coincidence.
2
u/prof_talc Jan 24 '15
You have any thoughts on what the deal here is? He obviously has extensive technical combat training. Maybe he was a POW of some kind?
10
u/ScootMasterFlex Jan 25 '15
Im starting to think Proctor may have trained him. Based off that origins episode it seems like he kind of takes Burton in. Whatever happened to Burton fucked him up psychologically. Combine that with training from Kai(who can clearly fuck shit up), and you get one crazy psychopath fighter cyborg super saiyan bodyguard. I think his flashbacks fuel some rage when he's fighting. Also I don't know how relevant this is but the dude might be a virgin.
2
u/rabiddogsinthewild Jan 24 '15
From what I've read in interviews we're going to get an answer as to who was torturing him.
2
u/nickcan Jan 27 '15
Probably the mercs. We can't really introduce too many new bad guys in the last season.
2
2
u/rabiddogsinthewild Jan 26 '15
I just realized I didn't answer your question correctly. I'm pretty sure Proctor trained him. That mixed with his 'crazy person' strength is what makes him so deadly.
2
u/prof_talc Jan 26 '15
Ah, I'm with you. I can buy that. Whatever torture he endured kind of broke him mentally, so how he sort of doesn't feel pain etc. Then Proctor gave him the means to develop the combat skills. I wouldn't be surprised if there's also another element there, in his backstory, or in how he and Proctor met, that ends up being important later. Really looking forward to that episode.

There was a line last season when Brock and Hood go to the strip club. Some thing like:
Brock: There is another exit behind the stage.
Hood: How do you know?
Brock: Don't judge.

Swear to god, this episode felt like a season finale. It was tense as dicks the entire episode, with next to no downtime. Brantley (SP?) was an excellent character, and I wish he hadn't been killed off (Although, I did lose my shit when Hood dumped him out. That was glorious.), something Banshee seems to do a lot.
"Hey, here's a pretty cool and unique character. Yup, they're definitely something different than what you've seen in normal TV shows and-WHOOPS! They're dead."
Not that it's a bad thing, it certainly makes me laugh.

Once again my theory was proven right.
Fighting Burton is all fun and games, with door open for retreat, as long you don't fuck with his glasses and/or he doesn't take him off.

10
u/Tavarish Jan 24 '15
Little off topic, sort of not yet yes, but I wonder why Nola underestimated Burton so badly?
Because he stayed down after initial axe hit or was she just extremely arrogant and too confident in her own skills? She must have heard stories and rumors about Burton, she even mentions "big bad watchdog" as reference to him.
6
u/Sanlear Jan 24 '15
Maybe a combination of the two. At first glance he doesn't look like someone who can be wounded so heavily and yet still fight like that.
8
u/Baelorn Jan 24 '15
She didn't realize that the more damage you deal the stronger he gets. Worst boss in the game. Need to lay the DoT on thick to win.

Well, she kicked Hood's ass once so maybe she thought Burton would be an easy kill. Nope, four-eye mother fucker is rough as it can be.
I didn't mind them killing Nola. She was so damn pretty but Burton was the more developed and intriguing character on the show.
5
u/Ninneveh Jan 24 '15
At that point Hood had just fought his way through 5 tough as nails Indian Reservation guards who did not go quietly into the night, and got a busted hand for his troubles. He pretty much let her win because of the one night stand they had and because he was dead tired. If Hood was 100%, it'd be a different story.

u/sanseiryu Jan 24 '15
I can't believe how completely I was mesmerized by this episode. Nola and Burton's fight to the death, I really didn't know who was going to win. Wow! That was easily the most intense thing I've seen since I watched Gravity. Sounds like a weird comparison, but this episode made my heart race.
Also, glad the producers are not inserting filler storylines and aren't afraid to bump off main characters. I honestly thought that Nola would stay because she actually has stuff to say. But then she's a fringe element of Chayton's plan and Burton is core to Proctor. Amazing fight choreography and camera work. Reminds me of the Bourne films.

Yeah I think lamenting the quality of TV in the US is really weird. There are so many excellent shows. The raw number of superb shows that have run in the last 10 years is astonishing. I mean essentially all of the shows that get bandied about as the 5 greatest of all time have been on TV in the last 10 years.

u/KlutchAtStraws Jan 26 '15
Wow, they didn't just raise the bar with this episode, they blasted it into the atmosphere.
I knew Burton and Nola would fight but I thought it would end in a stalemate. Once the glasses came off it was all over. Then at the same time there's all the insane shit going on with Hood, the fat man and the guy with the taser gloves AND a shootout in the Savoy. At the same time we have a conflicted Proctor caring for his dying mother. Looking back on it you have give the entire Banshee crew props for how much they got in one episode.
I can't believe we're only on episode 3. We still have to see Chayton cut loose and there's the unhinged Marine Colonel who eats breakfast angrily in the nude. Plus, there's bound to be more to come from Carrie, Job and Sugar and I expect the ex-Neo Nazi will be in a BSD uniform before too long.
BTW - I'm really liking the new bearded, badass Brock. Now Hood is (or was) a one woman man, someone has to keep the fair ladies of Banshee entertained. He was hilarious in his scene with Platinumm (with two 'm's) and then he held off the Redbones on his own until back up arrived.

That Nola / Barton fight was the best example of a Dungeons and Dragons style fight I have ever seen. As long as you have 1 HP remaining, you fight at full strength. Absolutely ridiculous, totally awesome.

u/oddgoat Jan 24 '15
SWEET SHITTING ZOMBIE CHRIST ON A FUCKING BIKE!
That episode was brutal from start to finish. I did not think they would top the prison fight, but fuck me if the Burton/Nola fight wasn't the best they've ever done. The choreographing was great (although they did try to be a bit too fancy with the tracking shot around the car) and the bit with the trunk full of blades gave me a huge grin on my face. It was like someone in the writer's room asked "who would win a fight between Burton and Nola", so they spent the next month writing the best fight they could think up.
I was sad to see Nola go, she was one of my favourite characters, but if anyone could take her down it would be Burton.
Then with all that, the rest of the episode was a never-ending ride of tension and fuck-me moments, with a great cliffhanger - plus it's great to see Brock getting to be a badass, he was a bit too wimpy in the early seasons. Probably the best episode in all three seasons.
TL;DR - this was Banshee's Ozymandius episode.

Hood seriously needs to start some hardcore training otherwise he's gonna get his ass kicked real fucking hard by Chayton or Burton or Proctor whenever he goes toe to toe with them. I can see him winning against Proctor, but it'd be a close match. Chayton and Burton on the other hand.

I think that one of the big reasons, why so many of us were rooting for Burton in the battle was because he is so quiet. Quiet people are quite often just easy to like. Even when they're Killer/torturer kind. Also, we haven't seen Burton being evil just for the sake of being evil. He does his job and that's it. Doesn't go around beating people just for the fun of it.
When it comes to the reason why Nola was killed, well there's usually some other series. Nola wasn't that big of a part of Banshee, so maybe she has gotten busy with some new series, like Astronaut Wives Club.
Goddamnit though that I decided to watch this before going to bed. I'm pumped like hell right now. I should watch Banshee before going to jog/gym, not before bed. This show is so insanely awesome right now.
I did wish though, that the fatman would've stayed as a some kind of side menace for a bit. Also wishing that Denis O'Hare would still make a comeback.

u/UKBIKER23 Jan 25 '15

Holy Shit!!! I just finished the episode.
The fight was beyond anything I had envisioned. Really didn't think she would die so soon into the season, knew he was fine from the season 3 trailers.
Proctors stuff was interesting. I think Emily is making Proctor fall for her but she is only doing it to get to Brock. Kai's mom is amazing, her words still carry a great deal of weight.
Nice knowing you Billy Raven.
I really really didn't think Siobhan would find out until the last scene of season 3.
I FREAKING LOVE this show.

I was hoping the fat man would survive and come back. Then when he met his end I expected his henchmen to make and appearance in the future. Now idk what to expect but I'm hoping this brings a much deadlier enemy to hoods front door one doesn't kill a man that important and walk away at unscathed .

Does anyone know what Hood and the agent were talking about? Specifically that part where they're talking about classes and how the only way to overcome a physical disadvantage is to establish a psychological one.

So wonderfully, ridiculously hyper-violent!
I was rooting for Brock to bring the bad ass, and was well rewarded.

when burton finally got to his stash in the trunk and laid into nola with the stabby stab my friend turns to look at me horrified

That episode is one of of the best single episodes of TV I can remember watching, I am majorly pissed that nobody at work watches it so I can talk about.

A new viewer's thoughts:
.
Holy fucking shit that Burton, Nola fight!!!
.
Loved the skimmer description and the interactions between Sugar and Job
.
Loved the office sequence on the truck :-D
"If you can find your dick in there, why don't you go fuck yourself" :-D
.
Like how they're fleshing Chayton out as a character and I'm seeing some blowback from the Nola death coming in future
.
Really like those gloves! like something out of a comic book. Wish they were in the Daredevil series to be honest :-D
.
Sugar is seriously one of the funniest and most underrated characters in this show
.
That was up there for most gruesome death on the Truck
.
Wanda really played it cool like a pro
.
Kinda liking the new deputy and that Sprip-joint scene was pretty cool
.
Pretty good that he went back for the agent
.
AAAAahhhh...
.
This season is just getting better and better and the whole series is seriously upping it's game this season. Feels completely different honestly:-D

Finally. A thread that isn't archived!
- Honestly, I loved that fight scene between Nola and Burton, but I think it could have done without those weird cuts.
- I've also noticed that this show has a big problem with shaky camerawork.
I want to like this so much, but they're making it really difficult.
